Download or read book Brittle Matrix Composites 7 written by A M Brandt and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium in Brittle Matrix Composites October 13-15, 2003 covers a wide spectrum of topics including cement based composites, ceramic composites and brittle polymer matrix composites. In the papers various topics and issues are considered such as: analytical and numerical studies related to the design of composites, prediction of behaviour and verification of strength and stability, testing methods, manufacturing processes and repair, environmental effects and durability assessment. The present volume of 55 papers proves that there are still many problems in the field of brittle matrix composites deserving theoretical and experimental investigations and that new solutions to these problems are needed for practical application in civil engineering, industrial structures, machinery and other domains.
Download or read book New Techniques in the Analysis of Foods written by Michael H. Tunick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume were first presented at a symposium organized by the editors and held at the 214th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Las Vegas in September, 1997. The symposium was sponsored by the ACS Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and covered recent developments of interest in food analysis. Many changes have occurred since the standard textbooks on food analysis were published: E. coli 0 157:H7 has leaped into prominence, requiring new and rapid methods of detection; MALDI-MS was developed and used in food analysis for the first time; elec tron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrorheology have been applied to cheese, bread, meat, and chocolate, new methods for monitoring and predicting shelf life have been introduced; new techniques for determining the composition of food have evolved. This book includes many emerging approaches which food scientists may find useful and probably will not find in a textbook. The editors thank the authors whose work is presented in these chapters, the Divi sion of Agricultural and Food Chemistry for agreeing to hold the symposium, and our edi tors at Kluwer Academic I Plenum Publishers whose assistance made our task easier. Download or read book Rheology and Processing of Liquid Crystal Polymers written by Domenico Acierno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) have many strange properties that may be utilized to advantage in the processing of products made from them and their blends with isotropic polymers. This volume (volume 2 in the series Polymer Liquid Crystals) deals with their strange flow behaviour and the models put forward to explain the phenomena that occur in such polymers and their blends. It has been known for some time that small ad ditions of a thermotropic LCP to isotropic polymers not only gives an improvement in the strength and stiffness of the blend but improves the processability of the blend over that of the isotropic polymer. In the case of lyotropic LCPs, it is possible to create a molecular composite in which the reinforcement of an isotropic polymer is achieved at a molecular level by the addition of the LCP in a common solvent. If the phenomena can be fully understood both the reinforcement and an increase in the proces sability of isotropic polymers could be optimized. This book is intended to illustrate the current theories associated with the flow of LCPs and their blends in the hope that such an optimization will be achieved by future research. Chapter 1 introduces the subject of LCPs and describes the ter minology used; Chapter 2 then discusses the more complex phenomena associated with these materials. In Chapter 3, the way in which these phe nomena may be modelled using hamiltonians is fully covered.
Download or read book Coal Combustion Byproducts written by United States. Congress. House. Committee on Small Business. Subcommittee on Rural Development, Entrepreneurship, and Trade and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The subcommittee has called this hearing so that members might learn more about coal ash, the small businesses that turn coal ash into useful products and the concerns that these businesses have about the proposed Federal regulations that they believe may have a negative effect on their industry ... The EPA has recently issued two proposals for regulating coal ash. One would regulate coal ash as a solid waste and would provide very limited Federal enforceability and may not provide adequate protection of the environment and human health. The other would list coal ash as a special waste under the Hazardous Waste Subtitle in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Subtitle C. The second option is one that we will focus on ... since it has generated great concerns among small businesses across this country. These businesses, many of which are represented here today, have reason to believe that regulating coal ash under Subtitle C, even as a special waste, will open recycling operations to added litigation and a stigma that will discourage the ... use of the products made with recycled coal ash."--P. 1-2.
Download or read book Deformation and Flow of Polymeric Materials written by Helmut Münstedt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the properties of single polymer molecules and polymeric materials and the methods how to characterize them. Molar masses, molar mass distributions and branching structure are discussed in detail. These properties are decisive for a deeper understanding of structure/properties relationships of polymeric materials. This book therefore describes and discusses them in detail. The mechanical behavior as a function of time and temperature is a key subject of the book. The authors present it on the basis of many original results they have obtained in their long research careers. They present the temperature dependence of mechanical properties of various polymeric materials in a wide temperature range: from cryogenic temperatures to the melt. Besides an extensive data collection on the transitions of various different polymeric materials, they also carefully present the physical explanations of the observed phenomena. Glass transition and melting temperatures are discussed, particularly, with their relevance for applications. A comprehensive part of the book deals with properties of polymers in the molten state and their decisive influence on the processing of the materials. The book presents and discusses viscous and elastic properties in detail as a function of molar mass, polydispersity, and branching. This book addresses students of polymer and materials science, as well as other natural sciences. Besides this educational value, it will also serve as a valuable monograph for everyone dealing with polymers and polymeric materials, from research, over development, to applications.

Download or read book Design of Extrusion Forming Tools written by Olga Carneiro and published by Smithers Rapra. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of extrusion forming tools (dies and calibrators) is a difficult task usually performed by the employment of experimental trial-and-error procedures, which can hinder the performance and cost of the tools, may increase the time to market of new extruded products and limit their complexity. This book provides detailed information on the design of extrusion forming tools. It describes the main problems to be faced when designing dies and calibrators, the most relevant polymer properties to be considered in the design process, the specific problems related to several types of conventional extrusion dies, and recent developments on the design of special dies and process modeling. It is an updated and unique book on the subject, where each chapter is prepared by internationally recognized experts. Having in mind its nature, it is expected to become a useful reference book for higher education students (both undergraduate and graduate ones), teachers, researchers and engineers active in the extrusion industry.
