Book ECSCW 2009 Proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work 7 11 September 2009 Vienna Austria

Download or read book ECSCW 2009 Proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work 7 11 September 2009 Vienna Austria written by Ina Wagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-19 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of ECSCW’09, the 11th European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work. Each conference offers an occasion to critically review our research field, which has been multidisciplinary and committed to high scientific standards, both theoretical and methodological, from its beginning. These proceedings represent discussions and contributions to ongoing challenges. One challenge comes from emerging new technologies connected to ‘social computing’, gaming, as well as applications supporting citizen participation in their communities. As boundaries between home and work erode with the increased movement of work into home environments, and new applications further blur the once separate conceptions of work and leisure, our intellectual community faces challenges in the ways we think about and study work. Other challenges result from transformations of the world of work itself and the role of IT in these. They have been taken up in in-depth studies of design practice, software development, and manufacturing, as well as in the growing body of research on health care contexts and applications. Finally, there is the question of what is the European perspective in our community and whether it is worthwhile to anchor our research more firmly in such a perspective. Of high relevance to our field is the strong grounding of technology development in an understanding of human activity. The nineteen full papers, four short papers and one discussion paper selected for this conference deal with and reflect on some of these challenges, thus representing the lively debate currently ongoing in our field of research.

Book Foundations of Quantization for Probability Distributions

Download or read book Foundations of Quantization for Probability Distributions written by Siegfried Graf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-16 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the rapidly increasing need for methods of data compression, quantization has become a flourishing field in signal and image processing and information theory. The same techniques are also used in statistics (cluster analysis), pattern recognition, and operations research (optimal location of service centers). The book gives the first mathematically rigorous account of the fundamental theory underlying these applications. The emphasis is on the asymptotics of quantization errors for absolutely continuous and special classes of singular probabilities (surface measures, self-similar measures) presenting some new results for the first time. Written for researchers and graduate students in probability theory the monograph is of potential interest to all people working in the disciplines mentioned above.

Book The Human Society and the Internet Internet Related Socio Economic Issues

Download or read book The Human Society and the Internet Internet Related Socio Economic Issues written by Won Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several years, the world has entered the first phase of the Internet Revolution. Investors showed confidence and faith in the prospects of the Internet driven economy. In the US alone, some 30,000 dot com companies have sprung up to support electronic commerce with a wide variety of business models, technologies, and/or items or services to sell or even give away. Traditional businesses, so called brick and mortar, or offline, businesses, have started to respond to challenges by Internet based new competitors by augmenting their own businesses with Internet based, or online, businesses and/or filing lawsuits against them. The initial business to consumer orientation of electronic commerce is giving way to business to business commerce, with large corporations forming electronic exchanges or consortia to conduct commerce among members. Government, industry, and civic groups have started addressing social issues related to the Internet, such as taxation on electronic commerce, privacy, intellectual property rights, security, hacking, cyber crimes, digital divide, etc. Governments have started legitimizing electronic signatures and stepping up efforts to track down perpetrators of cyber crimes. The courts have started to wrestle with issues of privacy, intellectual property rights, crimes, and impediments to Internet driven economy.

Book Systems Software and Services Process Improvement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A typical characterization of EuroSPI is reflected in a statement made by a c- pany: “. . . the biggest value of EuroSPI lies in its function as a European knowledge and experience exchange mechanism for SPI and innovation. ” Since its beginning in 1994 in Dublin, the EuroSPI initiative has outlined that there is not a single silver bullet to solve SPI issues, but that you need to understand a c- bination of different SPI methods and approaches to achieve concrete benefits. The- fore each proceedings volume covers a variety of different topics, and at the conf- ence we discuss potential synergies and the combined use of such methods and - proaches. These proceedings contain selected research papers for five topics: Section I: SPI Tools Section II: SPI Methods Section III: SPI in SMEs Section IV: Economic Aspects of SPI Section V: The Future of SPI Section I presents studies on SPI tools. The authors provide an insight into new tools which can be used for SPI. Willem Bekkers et al. present a new assessment method and tool for software product management. Ismael Edrei-Espinosa-Curiel et al. illustrate a graphical approach to support the teaching of SPI. Paul Clarke and coworkers deal with an analysis and a tool to help real adoption of standards like ISO 12207 and they focus on SPI implementation and practices. Esparanca Amengual et al. present a new team-based assessment method and tool.

Book Acting with Technology

Download or read book Acting with Technology written by Victor Kaptelinin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-08-07 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic presentation of activity theory, its application to interaction design, and an argument for the development of activity theory as a basis for understanding how people interact with technology. Activity theory holds that the human mind is the product of our interaction with people and artifacts in the context of everyday activity. Acting with Technology makes the case for activity theory as a basis for understanding our relationship with technology. Victor Kaptelinin and Bonnie Nardi describe activity theory's principles, history, relationship to other theoretical approaches, and application to the analysis and design of technologies. The book provides the first systematic entry-level introduction to the major principles of activity theory. It describes the accumulating body of work in interaction design informed by activity theory, drawing on work from an international community of scholars and designers. Kaptelinin and Nardi examine the notion of the object of activity, describe its use in an empirical study, and discuss key debates in the development of activity theory. Finally, they outline current and future issues in activity theory, providing a comparative analysis of the theory and its leading theoretical competitors within interaction design: distributed cognition, actor-network theory, and phenomenologically inspired approaches.
