Book excerpt: The 1990 Hayashibara Forum, "the International Conference on Special Functions", was held at Fujisaki Institute, Hayashibara Biochemical Laboratories, Inc., Okayama, Japan for five days (August 16-20, 1990). This volume is the proceedings for that meeting. On January 14,1985, Heisuke Hironaka and Ken Hayashibara, the president of Chair man, Board of Trustees, Hayashibara Foundation, met and decided to have an international conference on mathematics in the summer of 1990. This was pushed forward by Kiyosi Ito, who proposed "Special functions" as the theme of the conference. He also asked the present editors to join in the organizing committee of the Hayashibara Forum, 1990. On May 13, 1989 the organizing committee sent letters to major Japanese mathemat ical institutions asking their members to give suggestions about whom it should invite. Receiving the replies, the organizing committee decided the invited speakers, and sent invitation letters to them, in which it was written that "Special functions have been created and explored to describe scientific and mathematical phenomena. Trigonometric functions give the relation of angle to length. Riemann's zeta function was invented in order to describe the prime number distribution. Legendre's spherical functions and Bessel's functions were born in connection with the eigenvalue problems for partial differential equations.

This conference is the first of hopefully a series of conferences that will take place within the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and hence, we describe it as the First Conference on the History of Computing in Education (HCE1). These proceedings represent a collection of works presented at the HCE1 Conference held in association with the IFIP 2004 World Computer Congress held in Toulouse, France. Contributions to this volume range from a wide variety of educational perspectives and represent activities from four continents. The HCE1 conference represents a joint effort of the IFIP Working Group 9.7 on the History of Computing and the IFIP Technical Committee 3 on Education. The HCE1 Conference brings to light a broad spectrum of issues and spans fourcontinents. It illustrates topics in computing education as they occurred in the “early days” of computing whose ramifications or overtones remain with us today. Indeed, many of the early challenges remain part of our educational tapestry; most likely, many will evolve into future challenges. The creation of a past for themselves was of pressing importance to religious communities, enabling them to increase their status and legitimise their existence. This book examines the process in a group of communities from the southern part of Flanders (the monks of Saint-Bertin at Saint-Omer, the community of Saint-Rictrude at Marchiennes and the canons of Saint-Amé at Douai) over a period running from the ninth to the end of the eleventh century. The central contention is that the communities produced their narratives (history, hagiography, charter materials) for a specific time and purpose, frequently as a response to or intended resolution of internal or external crises.
