Download or read book Proceedings of COSPAR Symposium on Solar Particle Event of November 1969 written by James C. Ulwick and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COSPAR-sponsored Symposium on Solar Particle Events was held at Boston College at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts on 16, 17, and 18 June 1971. The purpose of the symposium was to present measurements and observations made during the November 1969 Solar Proton Event. This particular event was unique in that extensive solar, magnetospheric and aeronomic measurements by rocket, satellite and ground based techniques were made to provide a comprehensive picture of the phenomenology and morphology of this event. In addition, present knowledge of solar proton events and their effects on the polar ionosphere was reviewed and discussed. This included theoretical studies as well as results from investigations of other solar proton events. The symposium comprised invited as well as contributed papers. A total of 49 papers presented at the symposium are included in these proceedings.

Download or read book Solar and Interplanetary Dynamics written by M. Dryer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal discussions in 1977 among a number of scientists asso ciated with solar and interplanetary physics revealed a need for a dialogue between the two often-divergent groups. It was clear that the latter group was dependent essentially on the sun for its raison d'etre. On the other hand it was also clear that the former group could benefit in its search for insight vis-a-vis solar activity by looking beyond the shell of the inner corona. Needless to add that the combined solar/interplanetary topic is relevant to astrophysics when one considers stellar winds and binary star flows. It was felt, there fore, that a symposium was essential to bring together, for the first time, leading solar and interplanetary physicists from the interna tional community to discuss and record herein their own research. The fundamental physical processes underlying our own capricious star's activity can be understood only by the coupling of solar and interplan etary topics in an intimate observational and theoretical structure. This book, intended for active research scientists and advanced grad uate students, is an important step in this direction. The background of solar and interplanetary dynamics is provided in Part I (The Life History of Coronal Structures and Fields) and Part II (Coronal and Interplanetary Responses to Long Time Scale Phenomena).

Download or read book Comets and the Origin of Life written by Cyril Ponnamperuma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1981-08-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The return of Halley's Cornet in 1986 has generated much ex citement in the scientific community with preparations already afoot for an International Cornet Watch and a cornet launch by the European Space Community, the Japanese and Soviet Space Scientists. The meet ing held at the University of Maryland in October 1980 was primarily stimulated by the preparations for further study of this cornet and by one of the most important unanswered questions related to comets, name ly, whether they may have made a eontribution to the origin of life on earth. Our un"derstanding of the role of comets in the origin of life must necessarily come from our studies of the astronomy and the chem istry of comets. Some clues to the processes which led to the for mation of organic molecules and eventually to the appearance of life have come from these studies of comets, perhaps the most ancient of all objects in our solar system. Whether there is, however, a biology of comets still remains to be seen, although some claims have been made that perhaps comets might themselves provide an environment for even the beginnings of life. Scientists with the latest available information on comets and differing opinions as to the role of comets in the origin of life attended this symposium. The formal papers presented are now being made available to the students of chemical evolution within the pages of this volume.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlighting the importance to ecological studies of incorporating humans and their effects on ecosystems, leading experts from a variety of disciplines address a number of important issues, including: * the prominent role of humans in the function of ecosystems on Earth * why humans have been ignored in ecological studies * approaches taken by social scientists, historians, geographers, economists, and anthropologists in the study of human activities * the emergence of a new ecological paradigm accommodating human activities * methods for studying subtle human effects, and human- populated ecosystems * future research and training required to include humans effectively as components of ecological systems. Of interest to students and researchers in ecology, and to policy-makers and environmental managers. In addition, it makes social scientists aware of new opportunties for integrating their ideas with those of ecologists.

Download or read book The Alpha Series written by John Glenn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being sinful and worthless and 10 being absolutely perfect and righteous, how do you rate yourself, really? On that same scale, how does God rate you? The Alpha Series is a systematic study of all that God has done to make you a 10 and a course on how you can begin to see yourself the way God sees you. Knowing what God thinks about us gives us a choice in what we are going to believe about ourselves. Believing what God says he made us to be allows us the hope we need to cope with life. The joyful, confident expectation about our own future gives us the liberty to care about others. The Alpha Series may be used as a counseling model, a discipleship course, a faith based recovery tool, and a training curriculum. Along with the companion workbook it is suitable as basic curricula for all types of study groups and recovery programs.
Download or read book John Glenn A Memoir written by John Glenn and published by Bantam. This book was released on 1999-12-14 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the first astronaut to orbit the Earth. Nearly four decades later, as the world's oldest astronaut, his courage reveted a nation. But these two historical events only bracketed a life that covers the sweep of an extraordinary century. John Glenn's autobiography spans the seminal events of the twentieth century. It is a story that begins with his childhood in Ohio where he learned the importance of family, community, and patriotism. He took these values with him as a marine fighter pilot during World War II and into the skies over Korea, for which he would be decorated. Always a gifted flier, it was during the war that he contemplated the unlimited possibilities of aviation and its frontiers. We see the early days of NASA, where he first served as a backup pilot for astronauts Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom. In 1962 Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 Friendship 7 spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. Then came several years in international business, followed by a twenty-four year career as a U.S. Senator-and in 1998 a return to space for his remarkable Discover mission at the age of seventy-seven.
