Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Secretary: His Duties and Opportunities This book is the outgrowth of a series of lectures on private secretarial duties delivered by the author at New York University, School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance. The lectures were given to meet a demand from private secretaries and from prospective private secretaries, who desired to learn just what the duties of the private secretary were, how best to perform these duties, and also how to fit themselves fully for the position. The purpose of this book, then, is to give to those persons who are seeking to prepare themselves to become private secretaries or assistants to employers in the business or professional field the information that they will need to have about their specific duties. In addition it seeks to aid prospective private secretaries by pointing out briefly the general knowledge and qualities that they should possess. Book excerpt: The Romantic novelist George Sand - friend of Balzac, Hugo, and Liszt, and lover of Musset and Chopin - wrote this novel in 1834 in Paris and Venice, during her tumultuous affair with Musset. Through this story of a princess, the absolute ruler of an imaginary kingdom, Sand explores issues of leadership by women, male jealousy, and the problems faced by women who want both political power and committed relationships. The Private Secretary (Le Secrétaire intime) speaks to the concerns of contemporary women who want to «have it all», and is appropriate for courses in women's studies as well as French literature in translation.

Book Private Secretaries to the Prime Minister

Download or read book Private Secretaries to the Prime Minister written by Andrew Holt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the Prime Minister in British foreign policy decision-making has long been noted by historians. However, while much attention has been given to high-level contacts between leaders and to the roles played by the premiers themselves, much less is known about the people advising and influencing them. In providing day-to-day assistance to the Prime Minister, a Private Secretary could wield significant influence on policy outcomes. This book examines the activities of those who advised prime ministers from Winston Churchill (1951–55) to Margaret Thatcher during her first administration (1979–83). Each chapter considers British foreign policy and assesses the influence of the specific advisers. For each office holder, particular attention is paid to a number of key themes. Firstly, their relationship with the Prime Minister is considered. A strong personal relationship of trust and respect could lead to an official wielding much greater influence. This could be especially relevant when an adviser served under two different leaders, often from different political parties. It also helps to shed light on the conduct of foreign policy by each premier. Secondly, the attitudes towards the adviser from the Foreign Office are examined. The Foreign Office traditionally enjoyed great autonomy in the making of British foreign policy and was sensitive to encroachments by Downing Street. Finally, each chapter explores the role of the adviser in the key foreign policy events and discussions of the day. Covering a fascinating 30-year period in post-war British political history, this collection broadens our understanding of the subject, and underlines the different ways influence could be brought to bear on government policy.

Book excerpt: During the Civil War three intelligent, articulate young men served as Abraham Lincoln's secretaries. John Nicolay and John Hay lived in the White House across the hall from the president's office and, together with William Stoddard, spent more time with Lincoln than anyone else outside his immediate family. Lincoln's Men is a fascinating, intimate, and moving portrait of life in the Civil War White House and of the beleaguered president's extraordinary relationship with the indispensable trio he used as a sounding board—the best and the brightest of their day who had a place near the center of Washington's grandest galas and a front-row seat on the drama of war.
