Book excerpt: Fr. Alfred Delp,S.J., was a heroic German Jesuit priest who was imprisoned and martyred by the Nazis in a Nazi death camp in 1945. At the time of his arrest, he was the Rector of St. Georg Church in Munich, and had a reputation for being a gripping, dynamic preacher, and one who was an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime. He was an important figure in the Resistance movement against Nazism. Accused of conspiring against the Nazi government, he was arrested in 1944, tortured, imprisoned, and executed on Feb 2, 1945. While in prison, Fr. Delp was able to write a few meditations found in this book, which also includes his powerful reflections from prison during the Advent season about the profound spiritual meaning and lessons of Advent, as well as his sermons he gave on the season of Advent at his parish in Munich. These meditations were smuggled out of Berlin and read by friends and parishioners of St. Georg in Munich. His approach to Advent, the season that prepares us for Christmas, is what Fr. Delp called an "Advent of the heart." More than just preparing us for Christmas, it is a spiritual program, a way of life. He proclaimed that our personal, social and historical circumstances, even suffering, offer us entry into the true Advent, our personal journey toward a meeting and dialogue with God. Indeed, his own life, and great sufferings, illustrated the true Advent he preached and wrote about. From his very prison cell he presented a timeless spiritual message, and in an extreme situation, his deep faith gave him the courage to draw closer to God, and to witness to the truth even at the cost of his own life. These meditations will challenge and inspire all Christians to embark upon that same spiritual journey toward union with God, a journey that will transform our lives. ?As one of the last witnesses who knew Fr. To its advocates, privatization conjures up visions of a lean, streamlined public sector reliant upon the private marketplace for the delivery of public services. To opponents, it conjures up visions of a beleaguered government bureaucracy ceding vital public services to unreliable entrepreneurs. At best, privatization can reduce the costs of government and introduce new possibilities for the better delivery of services. At worst, it may undermine equity, quality, and accountability. In Privatization and Its Alternatives distinguished scholars from several social science disciplines evaluate privatization efforts in the United States and abroad, and at different levels of government: federal, state, and local. They look primarily at three important policy areas education, housing, and law enforcement that sharply illustrate the dilemmas facing policy makers as the debate about privatization shifts from the delivery of hard services, such as refuse collection, to human services. Contributors have very different perspectives: some are enthusiastic about privatization, others are very skeptical indeed. First published in 1882 under the title Christianus in Talmude Iudaeorum, this book caused a stir in Russia and beyond, and every effort was made to suppress it and smear its author. A marked man, he was targeted by the Jewish Bolshviks and executed in St. Petersburg--his only crime having been this book. A reading of The Talmud Unmasked quickly reveals the reason for this: the quotes from the Talmud reveal a shocking and deep-seated hatred of Christians, using terms and ideas which the reader will find deeply shocking. Non-Jews are described as Amme Haarets--People of the earth, idiots; Christians are "worse than Turks," Jews must not associate with Christians because they are "given to the shedding of blood" (i.e. the original "blood libel"); Non-Jews cannot be trusted with the care of animals out of fear they will have sex with them "for they love the sheep of the Israelites more than their own women"; non-Jews are unclean because they "eat abominable things and animals that crawl on their belly" and "because they were not present at Mount Sinai"; that when Jews come together to say the Kaddisch prayer, no dung of Akum (Gentiles) must be present"; Jewish women must "wash herself again if she sees any unclean thing, such as a dog, an ass, or People of the Earth; an Akum (Gentile), a camel,1 a pig, a horse, and a leper"; that Gentiles differ only in form from beasts, and are "children of the ancient serpent [the devil] which seduced Eve";--and many, many more. It has never been denied that the quotes exist, but merely that Pranaitis had extracted them "out of context." The reader can decide on the veracity or otherwise of this counter claim by reading the entire book. The Talmud Unmasked offers an insight into the nature of Jewish Supremacism and the hatred of non-Jews which lies at its heart: but possibly the most disturbing part is the fact that all Jewish learned elders are aware of these quotes from the Talmud--but never speak out against them, and continue to claim that their religion is a "light unto the world."
