Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Engineering Drawing for Technical Students The subject matter of this text has been carefully prepared and arranged with a view to meeting the needs of Freshman students in Engineering Schools and Colleges. It contains, in addition, ample material for the requirements of more advanced men who are interested in Engineering Drawing. The ability to use engineering drawings intelligently presupposes the power to make mental translations from orthographic projection drawings into perspective, and from perspective back to orthographic, as these processes are constantly taking place in the various departments of manufacturing plants engaged in engineering construction. Under the theory that as a boy grows up he develops a natural tendency to visualize objects in perspective form, the author has made use of angular perspective as a means of introducing the subject of orthographic projection, believing that a sound grasp of the latter subject may be obtained by comparing it with a known subject. After the fundamentals of both perspective and orthographic have been studied thoroughly, we apply this instruction immediately when taking up freehand sketching, for here the student is required to use his reasoning faculties to translate perspective sketches into freehand orthographic projection drawings. Book A Manual of Engineering Drawing for Students and Draftsmen Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Engineering Drawing for Students and Draftsmen Classic Reprint written by Thomas Ewing French and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Engineering Drawing for Students and Draftsmen There is a wide diversity of method in the teaching of engineer ing drawing, and perhaps less uniformity in the courses in differ ent schools than would be found in most subjects taught in tech nical schools and colleges. In some well-known instances the attempt is made to teach the subject by giving a series of plates to be copied by the student. Some give all the time to laboratory work, others depend principally upon recitations and home work. Some begin immediately on the theory of descriptive geometry, working in all the angles, others discard theory and commence with a course in machine detailing. Some advocate the extensive use 'oi models, some condemn their use entirely. Different courses have been designed for different purposes, and criticism is not intended, but it would seem that better unity of method might result if there were a better recognition of the conception that drawing is a real language, to be studied and taught in the same way as any other language. With this conception it may be seen that except for the practice in the handling and use of instruments, and for showing certain stand ards of execution, copying drawings does little more in the study as an art of expression of thought than copying paragraphs from a foreign book would do in beginning the study of a foreign language. And it would appear equally true that good pedagogy would not advise taking up composition in a new language before the simple structure of the sentence is understood and appreciated; that is, working drawings would not be considered until after the theory of projection has been explained. After a knowledge of the technic of expression, the penman Ship and orthography, the whole energy should be directed toward training in constructive imagination, the perceptive ability which enables one to think in three dimensions, to visual ize quickly and accurately, to build up a clear mental image, a requirement absolutely necessary for the designer who is to represent his thoughts on paper. That this may be accomplished more readily by taking up solids before points and lines has been demonstrated beyond dispute. Download or read book First Principles of Mechanical and Engineering Drawing written by H. Holt-Butterfill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Mechanical and Engineering Drawing It being incumbent on every one who aspires to become a really efficient Engineer, that he should possess a thorough practical knowledge of the Mechanical Draughtsman's art, we would in the outset of an attempt to explain the fundamental principles which govern its operations, observe, that the inducement to undertake such a task is the desire to place within the reach of every earnest engineering student and apprentice, a means of enabling him to read and to make such drawings as are placed before him in an engine factory to work from, and to prepare him for the subsequent study of engine and machine design. It is assumed by the majority of engineering students and apprentices, that the drawing practised in the Drawing Office will be taught them upon their first admission to it, but an experience of many years in some of the principal offices in England, has made the writer alive to the fact, that so far as the "principles" which underlie the practice of the draughtsman's art are concerned, absolutely nothing is taught the student, and that if he ever acquires a knowledge of them, it will be by his own unaided study, independent of any drawing-office help. With a view, then, to the acquisition by the student of this all-important knowledge, in the best possible way, we have in the following pages formulated a method of imparting it, which from practical experience as a draughtsman, and teacher, we have found answers every requirement. Whether that method is an improvement on any now adopted, is left to those who earnestly follow its exposition to determine. Before proceeding with that exposition, we would, however, put before the student, some facts bearing upon the study of drawing (and Mechanical Drawing more particularly), which may help him to appreciate the necessity that exists for his acquiring the ability to draw, if he desires to rise in his profession. Book Illustrated Architectural Engineering Mechanical Drawing Book

Download or read book Illustrated Architectural Engineering Mechanical Drawing Book written by Robert Scott Burn and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Architectural, Engineering,& Mechanical Drawing-Book: For the Use of Schools, Students, and Artisans Where this has been departed from, and an apparent mixing up of examples has resulted, considerations involving obvious advantages have suggested the change. On the whole, however, we trust that the classification so desirable has in some measure been obtained. Although aware that architectural and mechanical drawing has for some time taken its place in many scholastic establishments as a branch of ordinary education, we are nevertheless anxious to see it still more extensively adopted. We conceive it likely to be of more general use - even to those who may not at all contemplate following up any of the professions to which it is more specially useful - than may at first sight be acknowledged. Apart from the habit of method, which, if it does not create, it will at least foster and encourage, we see many advantages accruing to those desirous of having a knowledge of science by an acquaintance with its practice. And there are few, we think, in these days of practical science, who are not likely to be interested in its progress. Geometrical drawing - taking the term in its widest sense - is an art which will enable those acquainted with its principles to understand a scientific exposition with greater readiness than those can do who are ignorant of it. To convince the reader of the truth of this, we have only to remind him, that few expositions of improvements or inventions in practical science, in its widest range, are ever made without the aid of sketches, - these ranging from the simple diagram up to the more complicated drawing; and the ready understanding of these is open only to those acquainted with drawing. This consideration should, we think, weigh very forcibly with those who are doubtful of the propriety of following the example of so many educational establishments, in introducing geometrical drawing as an ordinary branch of education. To those desirous of following out the profession of architect, engineer, or mechanic, an acquaintance with the art is as indispensable as a knowledge of sketching from nature or objects is to the artist or painter. Without it, the practical man, however ingenious, will inevitably fail in perfecting, unaided, his ideas with that facility available to the accomplished draughtsman. Its usefulness in the workshop, moreover, is no less conspicuous than in the study or bureau, in enabling the inventor or improver to communicate his ideas clearly and readily to the workman. To the latter also it is equally important and indispensable, - we mean to those who are desirous of raising themselves above the level of the mere operative, the handler of the hammer or the mallet. Book The Theory of Engineering Drawing Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory of Engineering Drawing Classic Reprint written by Alphonse Andrew Adler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Engineering Drawing Although the subject matter of this volume is, in large measure, identical with that of many treatises on descriptive geometry, the author has called it Theory of Engineering Drawing, believing that this title indicates better than could any other, the ultimate purpose of the book. That texts on descriptive geometry appear with some degree of frequency, with but few, if any, additions to the theory, indicates that teachers are aware of certain weaknesses in existing methods of presenting the subject. It is precisely these weakness that the present work aims to correct. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
