Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland has long been known for its emphasis upon an educated clergy, yet little serious historical attention has been given to how this was actually fostered. This book begins to fill that gap. While a thoroughly historical study in Scottish church history and historical theology, the book also serves as a springboard for reflection and application to the work of theological education today with the evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed community.

Book Infant Baptism in Historical Perspective

Download or read book Infant Baptism in Historical Perspective written by David F. Wright and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These important and incisive essays, spanning more than two decades of research and engagement, probe facets and episodes of infant baptism's fortunes over twenty centuries. The story of pedobaptism is traced from its shadowy beginnings as a variant of faith-baptism, through inflated Reformation defenses as infant-baptism monopolized baptismal thought and practice, to biblical and ecumenical reevaluations and hopeful contemporary rapprochements across divisive waters.

Book Reformed Orthodoxy in Scotland

Download or read book Reformed Orthodoxy in Scotland written by Aaron Clay Denlinger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have witnessed much scholarly reassessment of late-sixteenth through eighteenth-century Reformed theology. It was common to view the theology of this period-typically labelled 'orthodoxy'-as sterile, speculative, and rationalistic, and to represent it as significantly discontinuous with the more humanistic, practical, and biblical thought of the early reformers. Recent scholars have taken a more balanced approach, examining orthodoxy on its own terms and subsequently highlighting points of continuity between orthodoxy and both Reformation and pre-Reformation theologies, in terms of form as well as content. Until now Scottish theology and theologians have figured relatively minimally in works reassessing orthodoxy, and thus many of the older stereotypes concerning post-Reformation Reformed theology in a Scottish context persist. This collection of essays aims to redress that failure by purposely examining post-Reformation Scottish theology/theologians through a lens provided by the gains made in recent scholarly evaluations of Reformed orthodoxy, and by highlighting, in that process, the significant contribution which Scottish divines of the orthodox era made to Reformed theology as an international intellectual phenomenon.

Book Defending the Revolution

Download or read book Defending the Revolution written by Jeffrey Stephen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688-90 played a fundamental role in re-shaping the political, religious and cultural map of the British Isles. Yet, as this book demonstrates, many key elements of the history of the period between the landing of William of Orange and the establishment of the Union between Scotland and England, remain shadowy. In particular, the religious and theological underpinnings of the Revolution in Scotland have received scant attention compared to discussions of events in England, and Ireland. This book sets out to show how the religious dimension of the revolution settlement in Scotland while comprehensively Presbyterian, was not inevitable, revealing instead the degree of political and religious pressure that was brought to bear in order to press for a moderate settlement that took cognizance of the Episcopalian position. However, the outcome demonstrated the ability of Presbyterians to respond to the changing political circumstances and seize the opportunities they offered, enabling them to galvanise their support within parliament and secure a settlement that went beyond what William and Erastian-inclined Presbyterians would have preferred. Traditionally, treatment of the religious outcome in Scotland has been restricted to a bare narration of the significant acts of parliament - this book takes a more thorough and critical approach to explain not only the nature of the final settlement but how it was achieved, and the legacy it left for both Scotland and the newly forged British state.

Book The Marrow Controversy and Seceder Tradition

Download or read book The Marrow Controversy and Seceder Tradition written by William VanDoodewaard and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Reformation, the Marrow Controversy of the eighteenth century is noted as one of the most significant and defining events in the Scottish church. However, until now, there has not been a serious analysis of the theology of the Marrow Men as it relates to churches in Scotland during the aftermath of the controversy. In this important study, William vanDoodewaard identifies characteristic understandings of Marrow theology on the atonement, saving faith, and the free offer of the gospel and traces them out in the theology of the Seceder tradition. In doing so, he presents substantial evidence for the continuity of Marrow theology in the Associate Presbytery and Associate Synod in Scotland during the eighteenth century. He ably demonstrates that while Marrow theology was not the primary cause of the Secession churches, the Seceders were aware of the significance of Marrow theology and consciously made it an integral part of their churches.
