Download or read book Prince of the Church written by Philip Ayres and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prince of the Church is the first biography of Cardinal Moran. Moran and his conflict-ridden worlds come alive as Philip Ayres exploits sixty-one years of unpublished diaries. He reveals a man of contradictions: self-contained, private, hard of access, yet forceful and determined in pursuit of his ends; pious and devout, yet proud, ambitious, and ruthless with his enemies. As the first cardinal appointed to Australia, Patrick Francis Moran (1830-1911) gave his Church a strength of leadership and authority not seen again in a Sydney archbishop for a century. Born in Ireland in 1830, Moran was brought up in Rome and witnessed the Roman Revolution of 1848, including the momentous and violent events of the risorgimento, the movement for Italian unity. The sounds of exploding hand-bombs and anti-clerical demonstrations broke the quiet of his archival researches into Irish ecclesiastical history. In 1866 he returned to Ireland and in 1872 was made Bishop of Ossory (at Kilkenny). As the movement for Home Rule and land reform became revolutionary and violent, Moran was pressured into articulating an increasingly radical nationalism. Appointed Archbishop of Sydney in 1884, he was promoted Cardinal the following year. He was prominent in the movement for Federation, running for election to the 1897-98 Federal Convention, and influenced the policy direction of the Labor Party under John Watson. Moran spoke out forcefully on moral and religious issues, relishing the sectarian print wars he often started. Prince of the Church is a definitive account of Cardinal Moran.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) is commonly regarded as Òthe father of modern theology,Ó many contemporary Christians think of him only as a difficult and outmoded German theologian. With this work, B.A. Gerrish offers a fresh view of Schleiermacher that breaks through the stereotypes and places Schleiermacher's work as a theologian into a broader context. Gerrish examines the elements of Schleiermacher's twofold theology - a specifically ÓChristianÓ relationship with Christ and a universally human consciousness of God - in the hope that this view of Schleiermacher's theological enterprise will lead contemporary Christians to reappraise him as a church theologian in the legitimate succession of Luther and Calvin.

Book It Takes a Church to Baptize

Download or read book It Takes a Church to Baptize written by Scot McKnight and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of baptism has troubled Protestants for centuries. Should infants be baptized before their faith is conscious, or does God command the baptism of babies whose parents have been baptized? Popular New Testament scholar Scot McKnight makes a biblical case for infant baptism, exploring its history, meaning, and practice and showing that infant baptism is the most historic Christian way of forming children into the faith. He explains that the church's practice of infant baptism developed straight from the Bible and argues that it must begin with the family and then extend to the church. Baptism is not just an individual profession of faith: it takes a family and a church community to nurture a child into faith over time. McKnight explains infant baptism for readers coming from a tradition that baptizes adults only, and he counters criticisms that fail to consider the role of families in the formation of faith. The book includes a foreword by Todd Hunter and an afterword by Gerald McDermott.

Book Gay Rights and the Mormon Church

Download or read book Gay Rights and the Mormon Church written by Gregory A. Prince and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Mormon Church entered the public square on LGBT issues by joining forces with traditional-marriage proponents in Hawaii in 1993. Since then, the church has been a significant player in the ongoing saga of LGBT rights within the United States and at times has carried decisive political clout. Gregory Prince draws from over 50,000 pages of public records, private documents, and interview transcripts to capture, in detail hitherto unavailable, the past half-century of the Mormon Church's focus on homosexuality. Initially that principally involved only its own members, but with its entry into the Hawaiian political arena, the church signaled an intent to shape the outcome of the marriage equality battle. That involvement reached a peak in 2008 during California's fight over Proposition 8, which many came to call the "Mormon Proposition." The church's activism against gay rights has continually resulted in outcomes that it likely did not intend, including not only public backlash but also reactive court decisions and mass resignations of church members"--Provided by publisher.

Book The Prince

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Marr
  • Publisher : Black Inc.
  • Release : 2014-06-27
  • ISBN : 1922231444
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Prince written by David Marr and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Marr’s explosive bestseller, now expanded and updated. The leading Catholic in the nation and spiritual adviser to Tony Abbott, Cardinal George Pell has played a key role in the greatest challenge to face his church for centuries: the scandal of child sex abuse by priests. In The Prince, David Marr investigates the man and his career: how did he rise through the ranks? What does he stand for? How does he wield his authority? How much has he shaped his church and Australia? How has he handled the scandal? Marr reveals a cleric at ease with power and aggressive in asserting the prerogatives of the Vatican. His account of Pell’s career focuses on his response as a man, a priest, an archbishop and prince of the church to the scandal that has engulfed the Catholic world in the last thirty years. This is the story of a cleric slow to see what was happening around him; torn by the contest between his church and its victims; and slow to realise that the Catholic Church cannot, in the end, escape secular scrutiny. The Prince is an arresting portrait of faith, loyalty and ambition, set against a backdrop of terrible suffering and an ancient institution in turmoil. Longlisted, 2014 Walkley Book Award ‘An indictment of Pell for blind, evasive, flint-hearted reactions...Has a more devastating portrait of a “respectable”, living, non-politician, Australian public figure ever been published?’ —Gerard Windsor, Sydney Morning Herald ‘An incisive discussion of the character and personality of Pell’ —Jack Waterford, Canberra Times ‘Descriptively superb. This is where David Marr rivals Lytton Strachey’ —Peter Craven, Weekend Australian ‘Marr makes good use of his skills as an investigative reporter as he looks at Pell's role in the scandals and analyses the Church's struggle to save its reputation ... This is outstanding long-form journalism.’ —Walkley Magazine, Best Non-Fiction Book of 2014 David Marr has written for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Age and the Monthly, been editor of the National Times, a reporter for Four Corners, presenter of ABC TV’s Media Watch and now writes for the Guardian. His books include Patrick White: A Life, The High Price of Heaven, Dark Victory (with Marian Wilkinson) and five Quarterly Essays: His Master’s Voice, Power Trip, Political Animal, The Prince and Faction Man.
