Book Health Care Reform and Disparities

Download or read book Health Care Reform and Disparities written by Toni P. Miles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-06-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes and examines how Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance plans combined with widespread business practices and fraud create inequity—the root cause of our dysfunctional health care system, and the reason for the rising cost of health care for all Americans. In Health Care Reform and Disparities: History, Hype, and Hope, prolific author Toni P. Miles, MD, PhD, uniquely expands the usual discussion of health disparities by including and emphasizing the voice and perspective of the consumer, and by featuring policy, media, and financing data. Highlighting the subjective experience humanizes the effects of bureaucratic inequity and inefficiency, while examining the facts and figures spotlights real-world opportunities for moving away from operating on a discrimination basis and refocusing on quality of care. The first chapter outlines the larger historical context of the health care crisis before subsequent sections describe individual aspects of the health care system—and each one's role in creating or exacerbating disparities. Health care issues specific to demographic groups such as young adults are addressed. This work is an accessible, eye-opening resource for educators, students, and policy makers, as well as anyone wanting to find up-to-date details on the policies and regulations evolving from the Affordable Care Act.

  • Author : Josh Blackman
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2016-09-26
  • ISBN : 1316739643
  • Pages : 607 pages

Download or read book Unraveled written by Josh Blackman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six years after its enactment, Obamacare remains one of the most controversial, divisive, and enduring political issues in America. In this much-anticipated follow-up to his critically acclaimed Unprecedented: The Constitutional Challenge to Obamacare (2013), Josh Blackman argues that, to implement the law, President Obama has broken promises about cancelled insurance policies, exceeded the traditional bounds of executive power, and infringed on religious liberty. At the same time, conservative opponents have stopped at nothing to unravel Obamacare, including a three-week government shutdown, four Supreme Court cases, and fifty repeal votes. This legal thriller provides the definitive account of the battle to stop Obamacare from being 'woven into the fabric of America'. Unraveled is essential reading to understand the future of the Affordable Care Act in America's gridlocked government in 2016, and beyond.

Book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine

Download or read book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine written by Graham Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.

Book Epidemiological Research Terms and Concepts

Download or read book Epidemiological Research Terms and Concepts written by O. S. Miettinen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is organized so as to address in separate sections first the preparatory topics of medicine (clinical and epidemiological), science in general, and statistics (mathematical); then topics of epidemiological research proper; and, finally, topics of ‘meta-epidemiological’ clinical research. In those two main sections, a further grouping is based on the distraction between objects and methods of study. In this framework, the particular topics are addressed both descriptively and quasi-prescriptively, commonly with a number of explicatory annotations. This book is intended to serve as a handbook for whomever is, in whatever way, concerned with epidemiological or ‘meta-epidemiological’ clinical research. But besides this, it is also intended to serve as a textbook for students in introductory courses on ‘epidemiological’ research – to which end there is a suggested hierarchy of the concepts that might reasonably be covered.
