Book Gender Policy and HIV in China

Download or read book Gender Policy and HIV in China written by Joseph Tucker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s concentrated HIV epidemic is on the brink of becoming a generalized one and syphilis infection has become a major public health threat. Social factors relating to gender and gender inequality exacerbate the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) in China. A better understanding of the proximate social determinants of HIV related to gender will be crucial to effectively curbing HIV and other STIs in China. Aspects of China’s governance - including administrative procedures, the developing legal system, social institutions, and the public health infrastructure – are instrumental in shaping strategies and responses to HIV. International studies suggest that women who are more economically and socially vulnerable may also have a greater risk of HIV infection, yet few initiatives have focused on discrete areas where achievable and sustainable gender policy measures could be linked to the public health response. This study presents perspectives ranging from criminology to social psychology to better understand how gender perspectives can inform HIV policy in the context of China.

Book On the Decriminalization of Sex Work in China

Download or read book On the Decriminalization of Sex Work in China written by Jinmei Meng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that the decriminalization of sex work in China can contribute to HIV prevention and human rights protection. The argument is supported by six key concepts: the universality of human rights, rights-based approaches to HIV, sex work as work, risk environment for HIV transmission, decriminalization of sex work as a preferred model for HIV prevention, and rights-based responses to HIV and sex work. Three research methods are used, including research methods from law, social science, and public health. Recommendations are provided to reform Chinese law and HIV policy.

Book excerpt: With HIV becoming the leading cause of infectious-disease mortality in Mainland China, this book focuses on tackling HIV/AIDS in the face of rapid political and economic change in China. Featuring contributions by over a dozen leading figures in the field, this book is the go-to text for any student or reader interested in how national and international organizations’ are attempting to control this epidemic. The book includes chapters on the epidemiology, treatment, and prevention of HIV, as well as several chapters that discuss in detail specific provincial- and national-level programs to control and treat HIV. It chronicles the Chinese government’s amazing about-face, as it replaced underfunded, non-evidence based policy decisions with successful, science-based approaches to disease control and prevention, including the adoption of once controversial needle-exchange programs and the establishment of a national HIV/AIDS data registry. It measures the success of national policy decisions, the implementation of treatment policies, and discusses the difficulty of accessing high-risk communities, including people who inject drugs, sex workers, and men who have sex with men – groups not easy to reach, study, engage in prevention programs, or treatment, for fear of stigmatization and loss of social status. Further, it documents the spread of HIV to other provinces, and the tragedy that befell repeat plasma donors in Henan and other poor provinces, where reused or improperly sterilized lab equipment caused some villages to have epidemic-level incidence rates. This book represents a positive contribution to the field of AIDS research, making vital, new information available to an interested readership.

Book Association Between Mobility Violence And STI HIV Among Female Sex Workers In High HIV Prevalence States India

Download or read book Association Between Mobility Violence And STI HIV Among Female Sex Workers In High HIV Prevalence States India written by Deepanjali Vishwakarma and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Violence and mobility are increasingly being recognized as critical risk factors contributing to the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted infections worldwide. The objective of the study is to assess the independent and combined associations of mobility and physical violence with sexual risk behaviors and HIV/STI prevalence among female sex workers (FSWs) in urban Andhra Pradesh, India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey the Behavioral Tracking Survey (BTS) u20132014 conducted with key populations FSWs (N=2400), in undivided Andhra Pradesh state in India was used here. Bivariate, Chi-square, and Binary logistic regression statistical techniques were used for analysis. Results: Approximately 18% of FSWs in urban Andhra Pradesh reported ever experienced physical violence, out of them, 69 % experienced physical violence in the past one year and 52% travelled outside for sex work in the past one year. Mobile FSWs were more likely to report physical violence compared to their counterparts (72% vs. 62%, pu2009

Book Psychological Wellbeing and HIV Risk Behaviors Among Female Sex Workers in China

Download or read book Psychological Wellbeing and HIV Risk Behaviors Among Female Sex Workers in China written by Yan Hong and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature has documented the association between psychological wellbeing and HIV risks, but such studies are limited for female sex workers (FSWs) worldwide. Data on this area are particularly scarce in China, where millions of FSWs play an important role in the escalating HIV epidemic. This book has three aims: first, to investigate the present knowledge on behavioral studies of FSWs in China and identify the literature gaps; second, to examine the risk factors associated with FSWs' suicidal ideation and attempts; and third, to explore the relationship between depressive symptoms and FSWs' condom use behaviors. The first study is based on a systematic review of English literature regarding FSWs in China. The second and third study draw data from a community-based HIV/STD intervention study with FSWs in Guangxi, China. The data reveal that FSWs in China have poor psychological wellbeing with high rates of suicidal behaviors and depression. Their mental health problems are associated with HIV- related sexual risks. Health education and promotion efforts among FSWs in China need to take into consideration their level of psychological distress.

Book HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Among Sex Workers in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Download or read book HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Among Sex Workers in Eastern Europe and Central Asia written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best practice publication describes the experiences of, and challenges faced by, five organizations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, which developed effective practices and implemented HIV/sexually transmitted infection prevention programmes for sex workers. These organizations operate in low resource settings with little or no support from local and national governments. The experiences drawn from these programmes can be helpful in initiating and moving forward similar projects, thus contributing to greater coverage of sex work populations and improved quality of existing projects.

Book Intimate Partner Violence Among Chinese Transwomen

Download or read book Intimate Partner Violence Among Chinese Transwomen written by Liying Wang and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is an emerging risk factor for HIV infection. Given the high vulnerability of and limited research on transwomen in China, we described IPV, sexual risk behaviors, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) testing rates and results, and investigated the pathways that link IPV to HIV infection among this population. We conducted a cross-sectional survey and collected blood samples for HIV and syphilis testing among transwomen in Shanghai, China (N = 199). With logistic regression, we examined sexual risk behaviors and HIV/STI testing history among participants with and without IPV experience. Over half of the respondents reported IPV (57.3%) and the prevalence of unprotected sex range from 51.9% (with sex workers) to 87.8% (oral sex); 85.9% had ever tested for HIV and 49.3% for other STIs. Self-reported positivity results were: HIV (2.3%), HSV-2 (8.3%), gonorrhea (18.8%), and syphilis (17.8%). Lab-confirmed positivity was 5.0% for HIV and 6.5% for syphilis. Respondents with a history of IPV were significantly less likely to report HIV testing in the past 12 months (aOR 0.20, 95%CI 0.10-0.38). Transwomen self-reported a high prevalence of IPV, which was related to a lower probability of HIV testing. The prevalence of HIV and other STIs was lower than reported in previous studies of Chinese transwomen, while the HIV/STI testing rates were higher. Findings suggest transwomen in China are at risk for IPV and need enhanced HIV prevention services to promote HIV testing in an IPV setting.

Book Using the Social Ecological Model to Understand the Contextual Factors Associated with HIV Risk in Commercial Sex Workers at High Risk for Contracting HIV

Download or read book Using the Social Ecological Model to Understand the Contextual Factors Associated with HIV Risk in Commercial Sex Workers at High Risk for Contracting HIV written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV infection are increasing at an alarming rate in Mexico (United Nations Program on AIDS [UNAIDS], 2006). Female sex workers (FSWs) are one of the groups affected by the increase in HIV prevalence in Mexico. Early surveillance of FSWs found seroprevalence rates of 4.8% in Tijuana and 4.9% in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico (Patterson et al., 2006b), while the most recent study of FSWs from these two cities found a seroprevalence rate of 6% (Strathdee et al, in press). Prevention efforts that are culturally sensitive and appropriately tailored are needed to stem the rise of HIV in this high-risk population. The current study examined the applicability of the Social Ecological model for HIV prevention in a sample of female sex workers (FSWs) (N=472) participating in a safe sex counseling intervention in Tijuana, Mexico. Within the framework of the Social Ecological Model we explored differential predictors of condom use by comparing women who work in bar settings to those who work on the street hypothesizing that there would be differences across venue (bar vs street) with higher condom use in bar workers. Baseline models were established using path analysis in bar (N=233); (CFI= .890, RMSEA =.062) and street workers (N=203); (CFI =.928, RMSEA = .040). For bar workers individual level factors, (self-efficacy, condom use beliefs, alcohol use before sex) and institutional level factors (condom access) were directly and indirectly related to condom use, while in street workers interpersonal level factors (social support, previous abuse, client power) and drug use were the most important factors associated with condom use. Multiple group partial structural invariance was then performed comparing street workers (N=79) to bar workers (N=103) on the 5 paths that their baseline models shared, showing that these paths were invariant across groups ([delta][chi]2(5) =6.30). Multiple group comparisons found similarities between the bar and street workers, including the relationship between self-efficacy and condom use. Baseline model comparisons found differences including the type of substance used before sex, and the relationship between monetary incentives for unprotected sex and condom use self-efficacy, supporting the need for the tailoring of interventions for women based on location of their sex work.
