Cort were tested in head seas for a variety of speeds and wave lengths. Both models were free to heave and pitch. Pressures at various locations over the hull were measured and the results presented. The model of the SL-7 was also tested in conditions which measured the separate components of pressure. The diffraction pressures were measured by restraining the model and the radiation pressures were measured by forcing the model to oscillate in heave and pitch. (Author).

Book excerpt: Calculated results from the ABS/SHIPMOTION computer program are compared with pressures obtained by experimental testing on scaled-down models of the SL-7 class containership and the S.J. CORT and with full-scale pressure measurements from the Great Lakes selfunloader, S.J. Cort. The degree of closeness in the correlations is different between the model-test and full-scale data. The correlation is also different between the SL-7 containership and the S.J. CORT. In general, the theoretical prediction has the same trend as measured values either from the model test or full-scale trial, with the model-test results showing a better correlation. It is not the intention of this report to either identify factors in the theory which are responsible for the discrepancies in correlation, nor to suggest what direction further research must take. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies have indicated that certain extremely large waves, measured during Hurricane Camille, might be characterized as non-Gaussian. Waves of similar time-domain description had previously been found to cause ship damages during winter storms. Interviews with ship masters and officers furnished additional important characterizations of these waves, as well as indications of the synoptic weather conditions which were involved. A survey of heavy-weather damage information from Coast Guard records was conducted to evaluate general trends of heavyweather damage to ships. A preponderance of damage is attributed to local wave loadings. Selected cases of ship damage and severe hull girder stressing were examined in relation to the types of extreme waves reported to have been encountered, or believed to have been encountered, based in part upon prevailing synoptic weather conditions. A tentative characterization of large non-Gaussian waves is provided. Recent developments in nonlinear wave mechanics are reviewed to help explain the origin and propagation of these waves. Current studies of the synoptic development of winter storms are examined to identify wind field characteristics which appear to be related to the development of 'rogue' waves.
