Book Over Regulated California Water Quality Standards

Download or read book Over Regulated California Water Quality Standards written by Stacey Lauren Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public drinking water systems throughout California are subjected to maximum contaminant levels or water quality regulations imposed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the California State Water Resources Control Board. As California’s water quality regulations become more stringent than federal levels, many public water systems are forced out of compliance and may be subjected to declaring bankruptcy. This paper will evaluate the existing limitations constraining public water systems from increasing water rates on constituents to pay for compliance costs and explore the option of modifying maximum contaminant levels to less oppressive levels. By analyzing the adversarial effects on water rate increases from voter initiatives, this study will eliminate proposition amendments as viable solutions in addition to promoting the use of cost-benefit analysis as seen in the cases of uranium, arsenic, and chromium-6 to amend California’s maximum contaminant levels. It is hypothesized that increasing California maximum contaminant levels to the levels required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency will concurrently promote economic affordability amongst public water systems as well as access to a precious natural resource while maintaining public health.

Book Water Reuse

  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2012-07-17
  • ISBN : 0309224624
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Water Reuse written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding water reuse-the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation-could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources. Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Book Los Angeles County Community Water Systems

Download or read book Los Angeles County Community Water Systems written by Gregory S. Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the essential role water plays in Los Angeles County, surprisingly little is known about our community water systems. Community water systems are the fundamental building blocks of California’s water supply network. These systems are responsible for providing households, businesses, and governments with a reliable supply of clean water at a reasonable price. They are on the front lines of adapting to drought and climate change. They manage lifeline programs for the County’s many low-income households. These systems are the portals through which federal, state, and regional officials implement water policies supporting water supply reliability, conservation, efficiency, affordability, environmental protection, and public health. Our analysis of these systems can be used to directly inform state-wide initiatives formed to address pressing drinking water concerns, such as emergency assistance efforts, the Water Energy Technology program, the recently-legislated Low Income Water Assistance Program and the work of the office of Sustainable Water Solutions....By providing this Atlas and Policy Guide we seek to improve policymakers’ understanding of the population of community water systems within Los Angeles County and to provide a data resource for future researchers--Luskin Center for Innovation publications website.
