Book Quantitative Evaluation of Standardized Predictors of Graduate School Performance at Western Washington University

Download or read book Quantitative Evaluation of Standardized Predictors of Graduate School Performance at Western Washington University written by David Emmick and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Validity coefficients of predictors of graduate school success at Western Washington University fall in the range of .2 to .4 typically found in similar studies. Data from 2,323 students for the period 1976 and 1980 were analyzed. The correlation with GGPA was .19 for GREA; .05 for GREQ; .10 for GREV; .14 for MAT; and, .34 for VGPA. Correlations for selected subpopulations show some increase in the correlation coefficients over the total group. Subgroup correlations are compared with median correlations from previous studies. The MAT and GREV have high correlations with each other and correlate similarly with other variables. The MAT and GREV would appear to be equivalent measures. In an attempt to enlarge on the meaning of success, two criterion variables, GGPA and TIME, were analyzed. A canonical correlation of .34 (redundancy =.055) was found between these criteria and the group of predictors: GREA, GREV, GREQ, MAT, UGPA.

Book The Relationship of Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test Scores and Graduate School Performance of International Students at the United States Universities

Download or read book The Relationship of Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test Scores and Graduate School Performance of International Students at the United States Universities written by Ramazan Basturk and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: This paper will: (1) review the validity of the Graduate Record Examination for predicting international students' Graduate Grade Point Average (GGPA); and (2) inspect possible social, cultural and language bias or learning style differences in the prediction of international students' performance from Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores when used in admission / selection decisions at American universities. Results: Different studies demonstrated that: (1) International Students who were not homogeneous with respect to linguistic, cultural and educational background; (2) Subgroups with homogeneous country of origin and background variables; and (3) Subgroups classified according to English proficiency, as indicated by Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores; GRE-Verbal, Analytic, and Quantitative scores; and self-reported English language proficiency. Research indicated that for all subgroups of quantitatively-oriented departments, GRE-Quantitative scores and GRE-Analytical scores were more highly correlated with first year average grades (FYA) than were GRE-Verbal scores. Their correlation coefficients were .311, .275, and .097 for quantitative, analytical, and verbal cores, respectively Conclusions: Every year hundreds of students from foreign countries enroll in American graduate schools and this trend will probably continue in the future. The decision to admit foreign students into a graduate program affects their advanced education opportunity and future career. The admission of foreign students to graduate school is a very complicated issue. Unlike their American counterparts, foreign students often lack proficiency in the English language due to differences in their native language, learning style and their cultural, social and economical background. The appraisal of the foreign candidate's aptitude for graduate study by standardized admission tests also has pitfalls. Poor performance may be due to factors not directly related to aptitude for graduate study. Recommendations: In order for foreign students in the US universities to be appropriately classified and their academic characteristics properly assessed, the admission committees need to create or be provided an effective evaluation system. In order to do that, confounding problems related to the GRE and its validity and usability with foreign students must be examined. (Contains 4 tables.).

Book The Graduate Record Examination GRE as a Predictor of Success at the Naval Postgraduate School

Download or read book The Graduate Record Examination GRE as a Predictor of Success at the Naval Postgraduate School written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naval Postgraduate School is conducting a three-year study to de termine whether or not to use the Graduate Record Examination as a selection tool/admissions standard. Students are currently selected based on their professional military performance and their undergraduate grades, math and science exposure. This thesis examines a sample of 198 students who took the Graduate Record Examination after arrival at the school and who have completed six quarters of study. The results indicate that the Graduate Record Examination is a much stronger predictor than the currently used undergraduate measures (Academic Profile Code). When the Graduate Record Examination scores are combined with undergraduate grade point average and the officer's age, an excellent predictor is developed. The thesis contains, in addition to descriptive information and regression results, a prediction equation which may be used by Navy selection committees in determining whether or not an officer will succeed at the Naval Postgraduate School. Book Graduate Student Selection

Download or read book Graduate Student Selection written by Inge T. L. Schwager and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate students' mobility has increased within Europe. Yet, empirical evidence on the validity of standardized admission tests in Europe is still scarce. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the incremental validity of the GRE® revised general test above undergraduate grade point average (U-GPA) by focusing on a multinational sample of master students (N)=)282) enrolled at a Dutch university. Results indicated that the Analytical Writing part of the GRE predicts graduate grade point average above and beyond U-GPA. Furthermore, the results suggest that the relationship is independent of students' socioeconomic status as indexed by parental education. Implications for graduate student selection in a European context are discussed.
