Book excerpt: An important cause of freshwater contamination in the United States, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) loss from agriculture often occurs when overland runoff transports phosphorus (P) from manures and fertilizers to receiving waters. Because of the importance of overland runoff in transporting P, models that allow us to pinpoint the location and timing of overland runoff are an important tool for reducing SRP transport in overland runoff. We created a simple regional model that allows us to predict the timing and location of runoff in the northeastern United States. In addition, we conducted soil box experiments which indicate that SRP concentrations decline rapidly over time after manure fertilization, and this decline in P availability is affected by temperature. We developed an SRP model which predicts the SRP concentration after manure application, which, combined with the spatially explicit watershed model, allows for prediction of SRP loss from agriculture under a variety of manure timing scenarios. We find that in a 326 km2 watershed where farmers apply P to match crop needs, simply changing the timing of manure application to avoid periods of runoff have the potential to reduce manure-derived SRP in runoff by up to 40%. iii.

Book excerpt: Anthropomorphic input of phosphorus into lakes and rivers can lead to harmful effects including eutrophication, algal blooms, and changes in community structure. Small order streams in agricultural and urban watersheds could potentially limit phosphorus loading to lakes through biotic and abiotic nutrient uptake and retention. In this study, we conducted sustained releases of potassium phosphate and Rhodamine WT to examine phosphorus retention and cycling in small order streams in the Fox River Basin in eastern Wisconsin. Stream characteristics measured included stream discharge, average width and depth, and background phosphorus concentration. Transient storage and phosphorus uptake metrics were determined using a solute transport model based on solute releases. Phosphorus background concentration was positively related to areal uptake (U) and negatively related to uptake velocity (Vf). Akaike Information Criterion was used to select linear models that best predicted transient storage and phosphorus uptake with the least amount of information loss. A model with stream velocity as the dependent variable was selected for predicting transient storage (Fmed200) and a model with the percentage of forested landuse as the dependent variable was selected for predicting Vf. We did not observe a strong relationship between transient storage and nutrient uptake. Additionally, our results suggest that streams in agricultural watersheds have limited capacity to reduce the loading of phosphorus to downstream lentic systems.

Book excerpt: Models are developed for predicting daily sediment, phosphorus, and nitrogen yields from small watersheds; routing the yields through large watersheds; and determining the optimal operating policy of the large watershed. Sediment yield prediction with MUSLE is refined by dividing subwatersheds into land capability classes to determine the linear factors. The phosphorus and nitrogen yield models, based on loading functions, are adapted to individual storm prediction by simulating nutrient concentrations in the soil, using daily predicted sediment yields, and computing enrichment ratios. Phosphorus and nitrogen balance models are developed to predict daily nutrient concentrations in the soil. The nitrogen balance model is also used in predicting nitrate yield. The routing model is based on sediment routing and phosphorus and nitrogen loading functions. Sediment routing is refined by replacing the median sediment particle size with the entire particle size distribution. Also the routing coefficient is determined for each reach instead of using one routing coefficient for the entire watershed as in the original method. Phosphorus and nitrogen routing is accomplished by using the routed particle size distributions to calculate enrichment ratios for the loading functions. Nitrate in the runoff is considered a conservative material for the duration of an individual flood. SPNM, a problem-oriented computer language is developed to make routing more convenient. SPNM is designed to predict sediment, phosphorus, and nitrogen yields for individual storms on small watersheds and to route the yields through large watersheds.

Book excerpt: Nonpoint source pollution by phosphorus and sediment is a wide-spread problem across the United States and specifically in Vermont and the Lake Champlain Basin. Best management of nonpoint source loading will likely involve a combination of land use and stream channel modifications, but few studies have comprehensively examined the relative importance of land use, streambank instability, and soil phosphorus. Thus, it is important to understand the associations between these characteristics, as well as their overall, relationship to watershed nutrient loading dynamics. The main objectives of this study were (1) to examine the impacts of land use at the watershed and near-stream scales on total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), (2) to explore the links between geomorphic condition and phosphorus and sediment concentrations and loads throughout the watershed and at different spatial scales, and (3) to investigate the importance of soil phosphorus concentrations in stream banks in contributing to the overall phosphorus load. TP, SRP, and TSS samples were collected from eight sites located at tributary junctures and one site at the mouth of Hungerford Brook, a 50 km2 watershed in the Lake Champlain Basin, under storm and baseflow conditions. Rapid geomorphic assessment (RGA) scores, land use, and soil phosphorus concentrations were collected for reaches upstream of sampling locations. Both nested and unnested design multivariate modeling was used to evaluate the importance of characteristics in the individual subwatersheds (unnested) or the entire upstream watershed (nested). SRP, TP, and TSS were predicted as both concentrations and instantaneous loads, using raw quantifications of subwatershed characteristics as well as these same characteristics standardized by the area of agriculture in the subwatershed. Correlation coefficients and principal components analysis were used to select variables that were used in Akaike information criterion (AIC) model selection and stepwise regression. Unnested variables used were agriculture, agriculture in a streamside buffer, proportion of corn, slope, channel degradation, and soil phosphorus. For the nested design, agriculture, agriculture in the buffer, channel aggradation, RGA score, and soil phosphorus concentrations were used. Best fit models were selected based on AICc scores and overall model R2. n ANOVA was also performed on the percent difference between storm flow concentrations and average baseflow concentrations. Results indicate that phosphorus and sediment transport occurs mainly during storm events and concentrations greatly exceed state water quality standards. Concentrations of SRP and TP were significantly lower at the mouth of Hungerford Brook than in upstream subwatersheds, indicating that deposition and storage are occurring in this downstream part of the watershed. SRP concentrations appear to be best explained by agriculture in the riparian buffer, while TP and TSS are influenced by agricultural land use at multiple spatial scales. Agricultural land use was associated with increased stream instability. These findings suggest that additional phosphorus and sediment management, targeted at increasing stream stability and reducing impacts from agriculture, are needed in order to reduce the overall load traveling to Lake Champlain.
