Book Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Inverse Problems

Download or read book Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Inverse Problems written by C.R. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the text of the twenty-five papers presented at two workshops entitled Maximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics, which were held at the University of Wyoming from June 8 to 10, 1981, and from August 9 to 11, 1982. The workshops were organized to bring together researchers from different fields to critically examine maxi mum-entropy and Bayesian methods in science, engineering, medicine, oceanography, economics, and other disciplines. An effort was made to maintain an informal environment where ideas could be easily ~xchanged. That the workshops were at least partially successful is borne out by the fact that there have been two succeeding workshops, and the upcoming Fifth Workshop promises to be the largest of all. These workshops and their proceedings could not have been brought to their final form without the substantial help of a number of people. The support of David Hofmann, the past chairman, and Glen Rebka, Jr. , the present chairman of the Physics Department of the University of Wyoming, has been strong and essential. Glen has taken a special interest in seeing that the proceedings have received the support required for their comple tion. The financial support of the Office of University Research Funds, University of Wyoming, is gratefully acknowledged. The secretarial staff, in particular Evelyn Haskell, Janice Gasaway, and Marce Mitchum, of the University of Wyoming Physics Department has contributed a great number of hours in helping C. Ray Smith organize and direct the workshops.

Book The Solution of the Inverse Problem in Geophysical Interpretation

Download or read book The Solution of the Inverse Problem in Geophysical Interpretation written by R. Cassinis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As is apparent from the table of contents, the lectures at the Third Course of the International School of Applied Geophysics, Erice, March 27-April 4, 1980 (the first part of this volume) dealt with several applications of inversion to different geophy sical methods. For every field, the more general lectures come first, followed by those aimed at more specialized objectives. Not all topics are covered and the coverage is not uniform. The seismological section (especially the seismic reflection methods) is the most developed, and this is only partly due to the actual state of the art. Unfortunately, only abstracts are available for two of the lectures. The second part of the volume contains some short notes and contributions presented either by the lecturers themselves or by other participants. They do not necessarily deal with the process of inversion itself but with the preparation and meaning of the data to be inverted or with some original treatments of problems that were discussed in the afternoon sessions. The discussion sessions and the round table that followed the lectures were essential to the success of the Course and to an understanding ot the difterent perspectives of the various specialists. I hope that the group of very brilliant and willing geophysi cists that made the meeting so interesting will stay ~n touch, grow closer, and meet again. Close scientific cooperation among them could contribute much to the "unification" of geophysical science.

Book Magnetotellurics in the Context of the Theory of Ill posed Problems

Download or read book Magnetotellurics in the Context of the Theory of Ill posed Problems written by Mark Naumovich Berdichevskiĭ and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume serves as an introduction to modern magnetotellurics originating with the pioneering work of Tikhonov and Cagniard. It presents a comprehensive summary of theoretical and methodological aspects of magnetotellurics. It provides a bridge between textbooks on electrical prospecting and numerous papers on magnetotelluric methods scattered among various geophysical journals and collections. The book has been written in the terms of the theory of ill-posed problems and contains a special chapter encouraging readers to master the elements of this theory that defines the philosophy of the physical experiment. The book thus offers the connected and consistent account of the principles of magnetotellurics from that single viewpoint. The book also brings together developments from many sources and involves some little-known results developed in Russia in Tikhonov's magnetotellurics school. Of particular interest are concluding chapters of the book that demonstrate the potential of magnetotellurics in oil and gas surveys, including discovery of the Urengoy gas field in Western Siberia, one of the largest gas fields in the world. This potential also is revealed in studies of the earth's crust and upper mantle.

Book Electromagnetic Seabed Logging

Download or read book Electromagnetic Seabed Logging written by Stéphane Sainson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seabed logging (SBL) gathers the electromagnetic methods of marine subsoil exploration and more specifically those dedicated to the exploration of oil and gas at sea. Appeared in 2000, these techniques, with more than 500 industrial jobs, present after 15 years of commercial success a discovery record rate of nearly 90 % and seem now to turn the world in the offshore exploration field. Proposing a serious index of the presence of hydrocarbons , electromagnetic SBL coupled with seismic reflection survey is probably the first reliable method for direct detection of hydrocarbons. Complementing the structural concepts of oil exploration used since the 1920s, the SBL now radically modifies the approach and the philosophies of exploration especially those then including drilling and well logging activities. Electromagnetic Seabed Logging: a new tool for oil and gas prospecting, which original publication in French was in 2012, presents these methods, its principles, advantages, limitations, instruments, modeling and applications. It is also designed to be a tool for a reflection on the use of electromagnetic energy for the exploration in a conductive medium as sea water thus setting the theoretical and practical limits of these investigations for future developments. This book is intended of course for the geophysicists and the petroleum geologists, but also for the earth scientists, the reservoir engineers and the log analysts

Book Theory and Practice of High Resolution Seismic HRS Geo Technology Application

Download or read book Theory and Practice of High Resolution Seismic HRS Geo Technology Application written by Vladimir L. Trofimov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the scientific, methodological and practical foundations for applying High Resolution Seismic HRS-Geo Technology in order to build detailed 2D and 3D seismic acoustic models in the form of acoustic impedances (AI) and reflection coefficients (RC) and the most important geological indicators. The monograph is a continuation of the book by the same authors "Oil and Gas Reservoir Prospecting and Exploration: High-Resolution Seismic HRS techniques and technology". Particular attention is paid to improving the process of searching for AI and RC models using the vector of objective functions, in which various types of residuals between real and model data are iteratively calculated. The well-known criteria for predicting the oil and gas potential of productive deposits from the standpoint of the system analysis principles and the set of geological indicators found from the HRS data are analyzed. The features of solving the main seismogeological problems using HRS-Geo Technology modules are shown, illustrated by numerous examples, and using a special (optimal) processing graph and a set of additional seismic record regularization procedures that provide maximum detail of high-resolution seismic data. The book is meant for scientists and specialists involved in in-depth complex geological interpretation of seismic data in the search and exploration of oil and gas deposits, as well as students of geophysical and geological specialties, graduate students of these specializations and developers.

Book Inverse Problems of Lidar Sensing of the Atmosphere

Download or read book Inverse Problems of Lidar Sensing of the Atmosphere written by V.E. Zuev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph undertakes to present systematically the methods for solving inverse problems of lidar sensing of the atmosphere, with emphasis on lidar techniques that are based on the use of light scattering by aerosols. The theory of multi-frequency lidar sensing, as a new method for studying the microphysical and optical characteristics of aerosol formations, is also pre sented in detail. The possibilities of this theory are illustrated by the experimental results on microstructure analysis of tropospheric and low stratospheric aerosols obtained with ground-based two- and three-frequency lidars. The lidar facilities used in these experimental studies were construc ted at the Institute of Atmospheric Optics S8 USSR Academy of Sciences. Some aspects of remote control of dispersed air pollution using lidar systems are also considered. A rigorous theory for inverting the data of polarization lidar measure ments is discussed, along with its application to remote measurement of the complex index of refraction of aerosol substances and the microstructure pa rameters of background aerosols using double-ended lidar schemes. Solutions to such important problems as the separation of contributions due to Rayleigh molecular and Mie-aerosol light scattering into the total backscatter are ob tained by using this theory. Lidar polarization measurements are shown to be useful in this case. The efficiency of the methods suggested here for inter preting the lidar polarization measurements is illustrated by experimental results on the investigation of the microphysical parameters of natural aero sols and artificial smokes using polarization nephelometers.
