Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Field Geology Geological maps are just as necessary as ordinary maps of mine Workings, and are not much harder to make when one knows how to go about it. It is the lack of this knowledge which is a serious handicap to many mining men who are naturally keen and intelligent Observers, but who fail to record and corre late their Observations. They Often carry an immense amount of geological data in their minds and make use Of it when looking over their mine maps; but such mental pictures lack the graphic quality found only in good geologic maps and sections, which usually meet with instant approval on the part Of practical men. Geological literature usually deals with results rather than with the methods of Obtaining them, and the terms employed are Often of a highly technical nature, so that the text is more or less unintelligible to one who has not had training in the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Geology and Mineralogy, a Short Course in Mining Science, Designed for the Student, Miner, Prospector and General Mining Man: Written, From the Standpoint of a Practical Field Man, Revised Edition With the prospector's instinct for new fields and with a firm belief that a common school educa tion qualifies any one to understand basic principles of any science, when presented in common every day language, the well meant friendly advice had to go into the discard. The occasion for a second edition should be conclusive evidence that the author's estimate of the ability of the average person was not wholly incorrect, as no work lacking in substantial merit can well have a renewed lease of life. Book Field Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Field Geology Classic Reprint written by Frederic H. Lahee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Geology The first twelve chapters are concerned with the recognition and interpretation of geologic structures and topographic forms as they are observed. Here the aim has been to describe to gether phenomena which in certain respects resemble one another, but which may be of diverse origins. Where possible the treat ment has been empirical rather than genetic. In order to assist the reader in identifying various forms and structures, a number of tables or keys have been prepared. From the very nature of geology they can not be final or complete. They are presented with the hope that they may be of some value at least in showing what features to observe in the field. In the last six chapters are described methods of geologic surveying, the nature and construction of maps, sections, and block diagrams, the interpretation of topographic and geologic maps, the solution of certain geologic computations, and the preparation of geologic reports. Book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 1 of 2: Theoretical and Practical From the days when Geology began to develop into an exact science, the student has been encountered by guides in the form of books, of two kinds; one promising to "lead him the sweetest and easiest way;" the other demonstrating that "of things good and beautiful, the Gods give nothing to men without great toil." The earlier writers gathered facts from too wide a field to demonstrate the steps of geological evolution. In the words of Professor Suess: "It is an exceedingly difficult task to teach a science well, which grows as rapidly as ours. The difficulty is not caused by the enormous yearly increase of new observations, because this may be overcome by patience, and by a diligent study of every good memoir. But I find that many of our best men go wrong in hanging to details, and losing sight of the grand features of science, or in proclaiming popular theories, and forgetting the painful arts of observation amidst the applause of a short-sighted crowd." The difficulty of teaching has also been the difficulty of text-book writing. And among the few works which have aspired to achieve a noble ideal, probably the most honoured place must be given to the Manual of Professor John Phillips. As the nephew of William Smith, he knew the history and growth of geological ideas as well as facts; and as a public teacher was not unmindful of the aspects of geology which are of vital importance in unfolding thought and imagination for the learner. Book excerpt: Replaces Compton's Manual of Field Geology (1962). A guide to advances in the increasingly broad and interpretive discipline of formation mapping theory. Thorough, yet compact enough for use in the field, it consists of brief descriptions of textures and structures useful in interpreting depositional environments, kinds of volcanic activity, and plutonic events and conditions. Included are procedures often reserved for the laboratory or office: staining rocks, correcting orientations of current indicators, constructing profile sections of folds, measuring strains, making photogeologic interpretations, and more. Covers pre-field considerations, methods of observation and measurement, recognition of key geologic features, and preparation of a report. Illustrated with composite drawings. Fourteen appendixes provide systemized data and procedures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Text-Book of Geology: Descriptive and Industrial Yet another word: The Author requests his brother geo legists who may glance over these pages to remember that they are not intended to contain an exposition of his own peculiar views, but rather to exhibit an elementary outline of the science as now established by the leading workers in Britain, France, Germany, and America. The main object has been to render the student such assistance as will enable him to proceed in the field as a practical observer, and to read with appreciation the higher treatises, special mono graphs, papers, and new discoveries of others. To further this object mention is made, at the end of each section, of the principal works devoted to the department in question to have done more would have been to enter on the field of speculative geology - a subject that lies beyond the scope of an Educational Text-book. Download or read book Geology for Engineers Classic Reprint written by Robert Fox Sorsbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology for Engineers IN these days of specialising in watertight compartments, the bearing of geology in relation to almost every branch Of engineer ing is very frequently neglected or ignored. A knowledge of geology is, however, Of the first importance to the practical engineer, but it is difficult for him to study the application of this science to his requirements Without having recourse to a large number of different textbooks and other works. References to geology which are Often of the greatest practical importance are often almost hidden away or treated in an obscure fashion, where as the engineer requires the needful information to be put before him in a clear and concise manner. To meet this want I have endeavoured to compile the requisite information in one volume, in the hope that it may serve as a handy book of reference.
