Book Successful Fruit Culture

Download or read book Successful Fruit Culture written by Samuel T. Maynard and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Fruit Culture: A Practical Guide to the Cultivation and Propagation of Fruits During the past ten or fifteen years great progress has been made in the cultivation and care of our hardy fruits and especially in the varieties grown, the methods of packing, shipping and marketing, and during this time few books have been written which have kept up with this progress. This progress and the knowledge of insect and fungous pests and their destruction has been largely recorded in scientific books and papers from the numerous experiment stations, with little from the practical and practicing fruit growers, and there is a growing need of a condensed work giving, in plain language, a summary of the scientific progress made, together with the practice of the most successful fruit growers in various sections of the country. Especially is this information needed that those just starting out in the business of fruit growing, or the village home owner who wishes to grow a small quantity of fruit for family consumption, may find in a condensed form the information necessary for success. It is, therefore, the aim of the author to make a book that is up to date in every particular and to cover the entire practice of fruit growing from the starting of the seed or cutting to the marketing of the fruit, though in many cases works devoted to special fruits may be more complete. It is written from the standpoint of the practical fruit grower who is striving to make his business profitable by growing the best fruit possible and at the least cost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Culture: And the Laying Out and Management of a Country Home Occupied as I have been for the past thirty years in the cultivation and sale of fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs, it is but natural that I should receive numerous inquiries as to varieties, their selection, and their culture. There are many books to which reference might be made, some of which are of marked excellence. Downing's "Encyclopaedia of Fruits" is an enduring monument to the memory of the late Charles Downing and his brother Andrew J. Downing, who initiated the work. Few men would be willing, had they the ability, to give such careful, patient, and exhaustive descriptions of every known variety of fruits, as may here be found portrayed with disinterested faithfulness. But this is a book for the professed horticulturist and orchardist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Handy Book Fruit Culture Under Glass Classic Reprint written by David Thomson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handy Book Fruit Culture Under Glass The culture under glass of the fruits treated on in this book, has, in some instances, been included in larger and more compendious works on horticulture in general; and on the other hand, various smaller works have appeared, each occupied exclusively by one fruit But there is not, so far as I am aware, any book of moderate size in which the forcing and general culture of these fruits collectively is discussed. The present Handy Book has been written with a view to supplying this want; and the Author indulges the hope that, compact as it is, it will be found to contain every necessary detail with regard to such culture. In writing it, he has kept specially in view the requirements of inexperienced amateurs who wish to superintend their own fruit-houses, and of young gardeners entering on the study of their profession. Book Fruit Farming

Download or read book Fruit Farming written by Cecil H. Hooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Farming: Practical and Scientific, for Commercial Fruit Growers and Others New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncouth; They must upward still, and onward, Who would keep abreast of truth. Lowell. When originally invited by the Editor of the Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Trades' Journal to write a series of articles on Fruit Farming for that publication, to be subsequently supplemented and issued in book-form as a reliable text-book for the industry, I felt it would be somewhat too heavy a responsibility for my individual efl'ort. However, talking the matter over with a friend (one of the best cultivators and most successful fruit growers in Kent). He said: We fruit growers are too busy with raising and selling our produce to write books, but if I can help you by telling you anything I will at any time gladly do so. Encouraged by this offer of assistance, I entered upon the task, and with the help of gentlemen recognised as authorities in the practice and in the science of the industry, I have endeavoured to give details of the best methods of management and practice, together with advice based on some ten years' personal experience of the pleasures, difficulties and anxieties of fruit farming at Highlands, Swanley, Kent. Various work and visits had taken me into most of the fruit-growing districts of Kent and other counties, and again I have to thank many growers for so kindly showing me their plantations and patiently answering my numerous questions. Previously, in delivering courses of lectures on Fruit Growing and Insect Pests for the Worcestershire Chamber of Agriculture at eleven different centres, I had taken the opportunity of visiting the principal fruit - growing districts in that beautiful county. A year spent among the fruit growers of the Cornwallis Valley, in Nova Scotia, Canada, enabled me to observe the good work of the Nova Scotian Fruit Growers' Association, its conferences, its fruit growing school for students and farmers (which I attended during the winter), its public demonstrations in pruning and spraying, and the spirit of co - operation which inspires the fruit growers of the province to work together for their mutual advancement; it also showed me the benefit of the telephone on the farm and the packing house at the railway depot. What I saw convinced me that, although the best English fruit plantations are probably as well managed as any in Canada or the usa, the majority of the fruit plantations and orchards in England are not as good as the average of those countries, where the growers are by nature progressive, the surroundings and climate helping to make them so. Iwas much struck at the time by the excellent bulletins issued by the agricultural experiment stations and by the Provincial Government departments. However, now our own Ministry of Agricul ture has an excellent series of leaflets on fruit cultivation, insects, diseases, etc., which all fruit growers or intending growers will do well to read, mark and learn. In these strenuous times home growers, in order to maintain pre - eminence in our own markets, must work shoulder to shoulder and cease to look upon their immediate neighbours as competitors, but rather as brothers with common interests. For this second edition the whole work has been carefully revised and in many cases rewritten. Several specialists have kindly contributed valuable chapters, as will be noted by a glance at the Table of Contents. I sincerely hope the book will help the monetary side of fruit growing, and also add interest from the many points of view from which the subject is dealt with cecil henry hooper. Download or read book The Practical Fruit Grower Classic Reprint written by S. T. Maynard and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Fruit Grower In this age of book-making, a new book should not be urged u]hi the public unless to supply a real need. My excuse for presenting at this time this little volume, is the want, on the part of beginners in the business of fruit culture, and of the common farmer who has not the time nor inclination to study extensive works upon the subject, of a hook that shall he sold at a small price yet cover the entire field of fruit cultivation, in all its details, in a plain and practical manner. The limits of the present work, however, will not allow of an extended discussion as to the merits of the many methods of growth and cultivation, and I have aimed to give only such as are largely practiced by the most successful fruit growers.
