Book excerpt: In 1970 Nagle, while living in Papua New Guinea, decides to write a fictional book about fictional people in politics and not about politics itself. He penned the title in 1972 as Power Seekers, which remains the title today. The book is a trilogy. Book 1 is ‘The Way to Power’, book 2 is ‘In Power’, and book 3 is ‘Out of Power’. Power Seekers book 1, ‘The Way to Power’, begins the life, times, and adventures of one man—Richard Harris—a man with a common name but an uncommon nature. This book is purely fictional as to persons, institutions, times, and places. It is about a man, not a person, who is ruthlessly ambitious, a Catholic believer (but not too religious), and a true follower of Jong’s synchronicity philosophy. Power Seekers takes the reader into a world of ruthless people, envy, jealousy, ambition, treachery, hatred, love, disloyalty, and lust. It takes the reader into the wealth and power of the big end of town and their extensive influence on all political parties and to the inner thoughts of the real leader of Australia, the boss of all bosses. Therein lay the reader’s journey into the light. Yet Nagle does define a caring world of some parliamentarians as opposed to the opportunistic world of some other so-called politicians. There will be some who read Nagle’s book and may think this book is based upon them fully or in part or about their lives or the lives of real people as a character, but as Nagle says in the preface, this view is wrong, and if they still hold this view to be true, they are advised of Carley Simon’s song: you’re so vain if you think this book is about you.

Book excerpt: In The Dream Seekers, Lee Irwin demonstrates the central importance of visionary dreams as sources of empowerment and innovation in Plains Indian religion. Irwin draws on 350 visionary dreams from published and unpublished sources that span 150 years to describe the shared features of cosmology for twenty-three groups of Plains Indians. This comprehensive work is not a recital but an understandable exploration of the religious world of Plains Indians. The different means of acquiring visions that are described include the spontaneous vision experience common among Plains Indian women and means such as stress, illness, social conflict, and mourning used by both men and women to obtain visions. Irwin describes the various stages of the structured male vision quest as well as the central issues of unsuccessful or abandoned quests, threshold experiences during a vision, and the means by which religious empowerment is attained and transferred.

Download or read book George Kateb written by John Seery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Kateb’s writings have been innovatory in exploring the fundamental quandary of how modern democracy—sovereignty vested in the many—might nevertheless protect, respect, promote, even celebrate the singular, albeit ordinary individual. His essays, often leading to unexpected results, have focused on many inter-related topics: rights, representation, constitutionalism, war, evil, extinction, punishment, privacy, patriotism, and more. This book focuses in particular on his thought in three key areas: Dignity These essays exhibit the breadth and complexity of Kateb’s notion of dignity and outline some implications for political theory. Rather than a solely moral approach to the theory of human rights, he elaborates a human-dignity rationale for the very worth of the human species Morality Here Kateb challenges the position that moral considerations are often too demanding to have a place in the rough-and-tumble of modern politics and political analysis. Rejecting common justifications for the propriety of punishment, he insists that state-based punishment is a perplexing moral problem that cannot be allayed by repairing to theories of state legitimacy. Individuality These essays gather some of Kateb’s rejoinders and correctives to common conceptions and customary critiques of the theory of democratic individuality. He explains that Locke’s hesitations and religious backtracking are instructive, perhaps as precursors for the ways in which vestigial beliefs can still cloud moral reasoning.

Book The Organizational Weapon

Download or read book The Organizational Weapon written by Philip Selznick and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Organizational Weapon is a classic study of the methods, propaganda, and institutions which create infiltration and eventually cooptation of organizations from within. The study applies its theory to communist techniques but its analysis and insights have, over the years, become extremely useful in perceiving and combating such methods in jihadist cells, terrorist organizations, and political groups of many varieties, not only from the Left. The book's continuing relevance and utility have been exemplified in how it has influenced, and been cited by, many current writers on how extremist and politically astute groups recruit and infiltrate more benign organizations and make them tools of further expansion of power and action. The book is also considered excellent social science and history, analyzing an important moment in U.S. history when trade organizations, community groups, and the like became affected by Soviet encroachment and Marxist influence. Its insights, from one of the country's most recognized social scientists, have stood the test of time. The new digital reprint edition from Quid Pro Books features an extensive and substantive 2014 Foreword by Martin Krygier, a senior professor of law and social theory at the law school of the University of New South Wales, in Australia, and adjunct professor at Australian National University.
