Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and early 1970s has become one of the most romanticized periods in motion picture history, celebrated for its stylistic boldness, thematic complexity, and the unshackling of directorial ambition. The Limits of Auteurism aims to challenge many of these assumptions. Beginning with the commercial success of Easy Rider in 1969, and ending two years later with the critical and commercial failure of that film’s twin progeny, The Last Movie and The Hired Hand, Nicholas Godfrey surveys a key moment that defined the subsequent aesthetic parameters of American commercial art cinema. The book explores the role that contemporary critics played in determining how the movies of this period were understood and how, in turn, strategies of distribution influenced critical responses and dictated the conditions of entry into the rapidly codifying New Hollywood canon. Focusing on a small number of industrially significant films, this new history advances our understanding of this important moment of transition from Classical to contemporary modes of production.

Book excerpt: Beckett Taylor’s quest to be a better man has brought Eve Hartt back into his life, but sometimes it feels like they’re bound together with barbed wire. Though he longs to love her without causing her pain, the wreckage of their past continues to crash down around them. Yet with the help of this brothers—and for his brothers—Beckett won’t stop trying. He’s determined to make them all a family, to make a life they want to live, and to make Poughkeepsie a place that’s safe to live that life. He can feel their futures balanced precariously on his shoulders: Blake and Livia and their children, Cole and Kyle and the new baby they’ve just brought home, and Eve…always Eve. He wants their dreams to be real. But murderers don’t just get Happily Ever After handed to them. They have to wrench it away from Satan himself. Good thing Beckett is prepared to do just that. After all, saving Poughkeepsie is the only way his story ends. Prepare your heart and your head for a wild ride in this final installment of the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series. Debra Anastasia does not disappoint as she weaves the last chapter of a story that blends true love, turbulent emotions, and life’s harsh realities into an uplifting tale that calls to the good in each of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the colonial period, the Poughkeepsie area has been a prime location on the Hudson, midway between Albany and New York City. Accessibility, scenic beauty, and a dynamic economic and cultural environment have made both city and town of Poughkeepsie excellent communities in which to live, work, and play. Numerous Americans have left their mark here, including the Livingstons, S.F.B. Morse, the Smith Brothers (of cough drop fame), Matthew Vassar, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and Thomas Watson Sr. Poughkeepsie has also been enhanced by the contributions of its African American community and by successive waves of immigrants seeking a better life. From hosting New York's United States Constitutional Ratification Convention in 1788 to becoming the location of IBM during World War II, Poughkeepsie has continued to be the site of world-changing events.

Book Hudson River State Hospital

Download or read book Hudson River State Hospital written by Joseph Galante and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 141 years, Hudson River State Hospital was home to tens of thousands of individuals suffering from mental illness. The facility grew from a 208-acre parcel in 1871 with seven patients to 752 acres with five dozen separate buildings containing nearly 6,000 patients in 1954. The main building was constructed on a Kirkbride plan, a treating philosophy centered around an ornate building of equal proportions staffed by employees who integrated dignity and compassion into health care. Famous architects Frederick Clark Withers and Calvert Vaux drafted the main building in 1869. The landscape was penned by Frederick Law Olmstead, perhaps best known for the design of New York City's Central Park.

Book excerpt: College senior Stella Denton has very few prospects and even fewer suitors i.e. none when a gunshot wound to the head catapults her from 21st century Minneapolis to Jarmo, a real-life hunter-gatherer society circa 7000 BCE. Although Stella starts 'living sequentially' in both realities, she thrives far more in her ancient life. However, an impending war could also get her people slaughtered unless she takes immediate action to save herself and her tribe. During her dual-life journey, Stella draws the interest of Dr. Vale, an unappreciated, thirty-something professor of paleoanthropology, charismatic Chieftain Hari of the Jarmo tribe, and young Ashur, a prehistoric teenager in need of lessons in love. But when the time comes to make an irrevocable choice between the two, will Stella choose down-to-earth reality or the allure of the unknown?

Book excerpt: Only a few months after embracing her magical powers, defeating a dark witch at her high school, and banishing a faerie prince back to his realm, sixteen-year-old Madison Riley is back in book three of the Embrace series—and doing the bidding of a demon. She has no choice but to do so if she wants him to honor the deal they made at his crossroads territory to save the life of someone she loves. Twenty years of service to a creature of hell is a big price, but it sure beats the alternative: selling her soul. But life gets complicated when you’re the beck-and-call witch of a crossroad demon. Caden, the demon she serves, wants to become master of Death Himself, and he has the means to do it as long as Madison helps him find all the pieces of an enchanted “binding” necklace. It’s up to Madison and her coven to foil his plans, but Caden’s intentions aren't entirely evil—and the kisses he seals his deals with aren’t too bad either. As Caden's motives test Madison’s trust, his shameful flirting tries her boyfriend Isaac’s patience. But being caught in a love triangle with two supernatural hotties is perhaps the least of her concerns when the coven’s interference in Caden’s plot might just cost Madison her life and unleash hell on earth.
