Book excerpt: Gas hydrates are ice-like crystalline substances that form a rigid cage of water molecules and entrap hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gas by hydrogen bonding. Natural gas hydrate is primarily composed of water and methane. These are solid, crystalline, ice-like substances found in permafrost areas and deepwater basins around the world. They naturally occur in the pore space of marine sediments, where appropriate high pressure and low temperature conditions exist in an adequate supply of gas (mainly methane). Gas hydrates are considered as a potential non conventional energy resource. Methane hydrates are also recognized as, an influence on offshore platform stability, a major factor in climate change contributing to global warming and a significant contribution to the ocean carbon cycle. The proposed book treats various geophysical techniques in order to quantify the gas hydrate reserves and their impact on environment. The primary goal of this book is to provide the state of art for gas hydrate exploration. The target audiences for this book are non-specialist from different branches of science, graduate students and researchers.

Book excerpt: This report provides a preliminary summary of geochemical contribution to methane hydrate research and exploration on the Hikurangi Margin, off the northeastern coast of New Zealand from June 20 to July 3, 2006. Geochemical porewater profiles taken from shallow piston cores and vertical fluid migration measured with heatflow probing were compared with seismic summaries of potential deep sediment hydrates deposits. Research goals for this expedition include: (1) Refine geophysical, geochemical, and microbiological technologies for prospecting hydrate distribution and content; (2) Contribute to establishing high-priority geographical regions of prospective interest, in terms of methane volume estimates; (3) Prediction of environmental effects and geologic risks at the continental margin associated to the natural resource occurrence and resource exploitation; and (4) Expand understanding of the biogeochemical parameters and associated microbial community diversity in shallow sediments that influences the porewater sulfate gradient observed through anaerobic methane oxidation profiles. Scientists from New Zealand, United States, Belgium, Canada and Germany, representing 11 university and government research institutions contributed to this expedition. Expertise of the science team resulted in the contribution of geochemical, geophysical, geological, molecular ecology, and biological data to address ocean water column, sediment, and porewater research questions.

Book excerpt: This book had its genesis in a symposium on gas hydrates presented at the 2003 Spring National Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The symposium consisted of twenty papers presented in four sessions over two days. Additional guest authors were invited to provide continuity and cover topics not addressed during the symposium. Gas hydrates are a unique class of chemical compounds where molecules of one compound (the guest material) are enclosed, without bonding chemically, within an open solid lattice composed of another compound (the host material). These types of configurations are known as clathrates. The guest molecules, u- ally gases, are of an appropriate size such that they fit within the cage formed by the host material. Commonexamples of gas hydrates are carbon dioxide/water and methane/water clathrates. At standard pressure and temperature, methane hydrate contains by volume 180 times as much methane as hydrate. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that there is more organic carbon c- tained as methane hydrate than all other forms of fossil fuels combined. In fact, methane hydrates could provide a clean source of energy for several centuries. Clathrate compounds were first discovered in the early 1800s when Humphrey Davy and Michael Faraday were experimenting with chlorine-water mixtures.
