Book Position sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Over Wide Speed Range

Download or read book Position sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Over Wide Speed Range written by Song Chi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Permanent-magnet-synchronous-machine (PMSM) drives have been increasingly applied in a variety of industrial applications which require fast dynamic response and accurate control over wide speed ranges. Two control techniques are proposed in this dissertation for PMSM drives, namely flux-weakening control incorporating speed regulation and sliding mode observer with feedback of equivalent control. The research objectives are to extend the operating speed range of the PMSM drive system and improve its control robustness and adaptability to variations of operating conditions as well as dynamic performance. First, a robust flux-weakening control scheme is studied. With a novel current control strategy, the demagnetizing stator current required for the flux-weakening operation can be automatically generated based on the inherent cross-coupling effects in PMSM between its direct-axis and quadrature-axis current in the synchronous reference frame. The proposed control scheme is able to achieve both flux-weakening control and speed regulation simultaneously by using only one speed/flux-weakening controller without the knowledge of accurate machine parameters and dc bus voltage of power inverter. Moreover, no saturation of current regulators occurs under any load conditions, resulting in control robustness in the flux-weakening region. Secondly, a sliding mode observer is developed for estimating rotor position of PMSM without saliency in the implementation of position-sensorless vector control. A concept of feedback of equivalent control is applied to extend the operating range of sliding mode observer and improve its angle-estimation performance. Compared to conventional sliding mode observers, the proposed one features the flexibility to design parameters of sliding mode observer operating in a wide speed range. The estimation error of rotor position can be reduced by properly selecting the feedback gain of equivalent control. In addition, a flux-based sliding mode observer with adaptive feedback gain is investigated. The constant magnitude of equivalent control makes it easier to design the switching gain of discontinuous control in the sliding mode observer. As a result, the problematic chattering phenomenon normally prevailing at low speeds due to high switching gains can be mitigated or even eliminated. The feasibility and effectiveness of the control techniques addressed in this dissertation are verified by both computer simulation and experimental results.

Book Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Drives

Download or read book Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Drives written by Adhavan Balashanmugham and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive is one of best choices for a full range of motion control applications. For example, the PMSM is widely used in robotics, machine tools, actuators, and it is being considered in high-power applications such as industrial drives and vehicular propulsion. It is also used for residential/commercial applications. The PMSM is known for having low torque ripple, superior dynamic performance, high efficiency and high power density. Section 1 deals with the introduction of PMSM and how it is evolved from synchronous motors. Section 2 briefly discusses about the types of PMSM. Section 3 tells about the assumptions in PMSM for modeling of PMSM and it derives the equivalent circuit of PMSM. In Section 4, permanent magnet synchronous motor drive system is briefly discussed with explanation of each blocks in the systems. Section 5 reveals about the control techniques of PMSM like scalar control, vector control and simulation of PMSM driven by field-oriented control using fuzzy logic control with space vector modulation for minimizing torque ripples. PMSM control with and without rotor position sensors along with different control techniques for controlling various parameters of PMSM for different applications is presented in Section 6.

Book Investigation of Optimized Control Methods for Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor Drives

Download or read book Investigation of Optimized Control Methods for Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor Drives written by Zhuangyao Tang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives in industry applications such as electric/hybrid vehicles has stimulated the need for optimized control methods. Theoretically, the dynamic performance, torque generation efficiency, and robustness are three primary metrics that control methods have sought to optimize. In industry applications, however, the drive’s overall system cost must also be taken into consideration. For PMSM drives, the controller unit accounts for a large portion of the end-product cost and more complicated control methods need more powerful controller units in order to be implemented. Therefore, the PMSM drive can be more affordable if the control methods have simpler structures. Field-oriented control (FOC) schemes and V/f control schemes are most commonly used in PMSM drives. For sensorless PMSM FOC schemes, sliding-mode observer (SMO) is usually adopted to estimate rotor position in the mid- to high-speed range because of its robustness to parameter variations. However, the low-pass filters required in the SMO induce phase delay and cause estimation error which affects the torque generation efficiency. Recently, V/f control schemes are also becoming popular due to its simple structure and wide speed range. They take advantage of stabilizing loops to maintain control system stability without knowledge of rotor position. Therefore, costly rotor position sensors or complicated model based observers are not needed in V/f control schemes. However, the previously proposed stabilizing loops still require much computation effort to guarantee optimal torque generation efficiency. The insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based voltage source inverter (VSI) is the standard industry solution for PMSM drives. In order to prevent DC bus short circuit fault, the dead time is inserted in switching signals, which results in current distortion on the other hand. There are previously proposed dead-time compensation methods for FOC schemes to address this issue. However, most of them require extra hardware or complicated signal processing algorithms. In addition, their compensation performance can still be affected by parameter variations. Furthermore, there is no dead-time compensation method which can be conveniently used by V/f control schemes. The goal of this research is to develop optimized control methods with simpler structures to address aforementioned issues, which can be summarized as follows; • develop an improved SMO with a new phase delay mitigation algorithm to reduce estimation error, • develop a V/f sensorless control scheme for PMSM drives with simpler stabilizing loops while guaranteeing the premium performance and optimal torque generation efficiency, • develop dead-time compensation methods which are robust to parameter variations and easy to be implemented and integrated with FOC and V/f control schemes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed sensorless control offers an effective means to solve the problems incurred in using position sensors in PMSM control systems. Firstly, it provides an alternative to existing sensor-based controls for PMSMs with reduced cost, size, weight, and hardware complexity. Second, it can be used as a supplementary (backup) function in the sensor-based control systems, when the sensor failure occurs. Moreover, the estimated rotor position and speed and other state variables of the PMSMs can be used for condition monitoring of the position sensors and other components in the PMSM drive system.
