Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1753, Portsmouth became the major port of entry for goods coming into North Carolina until around 1845. It served as a major hub for maritime trade up and down the East Coast of the United States and to the Caribbean. During the Civil War, most of the residents left the island, and very few of them returned after the war. Over the next century, many more residents left due to the bad hurricanes and lack of jobs. By the 1970s, the island was a deserted ghost town. The State of North Carolina began buying up the property on Portsmouth Island and, in 1976, gave the land to the Cape Lookout National Seashore. The Cape Lookout National Seashore has helped preserve the historic character of the village, which in turn has brought a surge in tourism. In 1994, the Friends of Portsmouth Island was formed. In addition to the National Seashore, it has worked to preserve the village as well as the history of the island.

Book excerpt: PORTSMOUTH ISLAND, THE GHOST VILLAGE OF THE OUTER BANKS, attracts curiosity seekers and history lovers, both. A small, now uninhabited island southwest of Ocracoke Island, Portsmouth was once a thriving seaport serving the North Carolina coast.Ellen Fulcher Cloud's Portsmouth: The Way It Was shares the island's early history, based on information never before documented: records of storms, wars, and Federal occupation during the Civil War (and claims to the government for losses), along with numerous personal letters and photographs. War activities from the Spanish Invasion through the Civil War are documented, as is the story of America's first marine hospital, established on Portsmouth in 1820, and of Dr. Samuel Dudley, the wealthy second physician in charge. We meet John Wallace, the businessman "Governor of Shell Castle," and the brave members of the Life-Saving Service. We learn of the integral role of the island's one black family, listen in on a daylong interview with Mrs. Mattie Gilgo (1885-1976) about Portsmouth life a century ago, and get an inside look at the village school and postal service. And we learn of Portsmouth's eventual transition to an oddity -- a village of empty homes, church and post office, maintained today by the National Park Service. The book depicts a way of life on the Outer Banks that is all but forgotten.Long almost impossible to find, Portsmouth: The Way It Was is back in an enhanced second edition, with more pages and photographs, computer-enhanced photo resolution and, for the first time, a keepsake, hardcover binding. It is a book that should find its way onto the shelf of every Outer Banks lover.
Download or read book Boon Island written by Stephen A. Erickson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wreck of the Nottingham Galley on Boon Island and the resultant rumors of insurance fraud, mutiny, treason, and cannibalism was one of the most sensational stories of the early 18th century. Shortly after departing England with Captain John Deane at the helm, his brother Jasper and another investor aboard, and a skeleton crew, the ship encountered French privateers on her way to Ireland, where she then lingered for weeks picking up cargo. They eventually headed into the North Atlantic later in the season than was reasonably safe and found themselves shipwrecked on the notorious Boon Island, just off the New England coast. Captain Deane offered one version of the events that led them to the barren rock off the coast of Maine; his crew proposed another. The story contains mysteries that endure to this day, yet no contemporary non-fiction account of the story exists. In the hands of skilled storytellers Andrew Vietze and Stephen Erickson, this becomes a historical adventure-mystery that will appeal to readers of South and The Perfect Storm.
