Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of one man’s efforts to authenticate a photograph of the influential King of the Delta Blues amid pushback from others. After Zeke Schein purchased the lost photograph of Robert Johnson online, he knew he held something important in his hands. But would anyone else see what he saw? One of only three or four known photos of the legendary blues guitarist, the photograph was certainly an exceptional artifact of music history. Despite official recognition of its authenticity by the estate of Robert Johnson, music historians have continued to dispute the photograph’s legitimacy. The story of Johnson’s lost photograph is also the story of Schein’s crusade to prove he’s holding a bona fide piece of music history. Much like a modern-day Don Quixote in a felt fedora, Schein is on a mission to convince others to see the truth as only he can. “When you love the music and the person behind the music, you want to know more about him. That’s what this book is all about.”—from the foreword by Dion DiMucci, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and author of Dion: The Wanderer Talks Truth “Magic and mystery meld with humility and history. Portrait of a Phantom is a tale told by a true acolyte and seeker of the source of the blues.”—Patti Smith, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and author of the National Book Award–winner Just Kids “A fascinating trip into the world of blues history . . . The details and anecdotes herein give a great perspective to “the Phantom.””—John Hammond, blues singer and musician

Book Ghost Image

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hervé Guibert
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2014-03-26
  • ISBN : 022613248X
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Ghost Image written by Hervé Guibert and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghost Image is made up of sixty-three short essays—meditations, memories, fantasies, and stories bordering on prose poems—and not a single image. Hervé Guibert’s brief, literary rumination on photography was written in response to Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida, but its deeply personal contents go far beyond that canonical text. Some essays talk of Guibert’s parents and friends, some describe old family photographs and films, and spinning through them all are reflections on remembrance, narcissism, seduction, deception, death, and the phantom images that have been missed. Both a memoir and an exploration of the artistic process, Ghost Image not only reveals Guibert’s particular experience as a gay artist captivated by the transience and physicality of his media and his life, but also his thoughts on the more technical aspects of his vocation. In one essay, Guibert searches through a cardboard box of family portraits for clues—answers, or even questions—about the lives of his parents and more distant relatives. Rifling through vacation snapshots and the autographed images of long-forgotten film stars, Guibert muses, “I don’t even recognize the faces, except occasionally that of an aunt or great-aunt, or the thin, fair face of my mother as a young girl.” In other essays, he explains how he composes his photographs, and how—in writing—he seeks to escape and correct the inherent limits of his technique, to preserve those images lost to his technical failings as a photographer. With strains of Jean Genet and recurring themes that speak to the work of contemporary artists across a range of media, Guibert’s Ghost Image is a beautifully written, melancholic ode to existence and art forms both fleeting and powerful—a unique memoir at the nexus of family, memory, desire, and photography.

  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book The Phantom Image written by Patrick R. Crowley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a rich corpus of art works, including sarcophagi, tomb paintings, and floor mosaics, Patrick R. Crowley investigates how something as insubstantial as a ghost could be made visible through the material grit of stone and paint. In this fresh and wide-ranging study, he uses the figure of the ghost to offer a new understanding of the status of the image in Roman art and visual culture. Tracing the shifting practices and debates in antiquity about the nature of vision and representation, Crowley shows how images of ghosts make visible structures of beholding and strategies of depiction. Yet the figure of the ghost simultaneously contributes to a broader conceptual history that accounts for how modalities of belief emerged and developed in antiquity. Neither illustrations of ancient beliefs in ghosts nor depictions of afterlife, these images show us something about the visual event of seeing itself. The Phantom Image offers essential insight into ancient art, visual culture, and the history of the image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From World War Two veteran to legendary American mountain man: The “mesmerizing tale . . . [of] a 20th century Kit Carson” (The Winchester Star). Orphaned as a young child during the Great Depression, he was called John P. Glover. No one at the boys’ schools in which he grew up knew much about him. The boy himself hadn’t even a clue what the “P” stood for. Seventy years later he was known as the Sierra Phantom, a blissful, solitary modern frontiersman who’d finally found a place to call home in the wilds of the Sierra Nevada. Then, after decades of surviving off the land, the local legend who lived in the shadow of the small mountain town of Bishop, California, was tracked down by journalist Danielle Nadler. Through their weekly conversations, the mountaineer shares his years of outdoor survival, his need to be free, and eventually the personal tragedies that drove him to a life in the wild—from his hardscrabble childhood to his service fighting the Japanese during the Second World War. With each new revelation behind his personal, spiritual, and emotional journey, the Sierra Phantom himself comes to discover the importance of human connections, and a renewed sense of purpose that could change his life yet again.

The painting of Mary is more than just a beautiful object for Alison—it holds the key to her past life, the unlocking of the mystery surrounding Mary’s disappearance and how Alison can get back to her own time. To when she and Mary were childhood enemies yet shared a pact that now, finally, must be fulfilled, no matter the cost. Bestselling author of House of Shadows Nicola Cornick offers a provocative alternate history of rivals, secrets and danger, set in a time when a woman’s destiny was determined by the politics of men and luck of birth.
