Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a young pedophile named Asberry who enters, escapes, and returns to a psychiatric hospital. Then he goes to church. "Oh, that's only a secondary fear. The real fear is a fear of what caused the apparition. And that fear doesn't go away. I have it fairly powerfully inside me right now." -Franz Kafka I wrote this seven years ago in a one-room apartment outside a community college in western Nevada. This work is free and in the public domain. Contact me at [email protected] for a copy. Republish. This is the beginning of the introduction: The old man and green lady pulled themselves forward like they'd been shrunk by a magician and forced to sit guests at a slug banquet. Come on, the green lady said and patted the old man's hand. He groaned when they turned. The lady smiled for him. He stared down the same hallway they'd paced for hours. One last time, she thought. The old man stopped at a counter behind the lady where her menthol cigarettes were kept. She couldn't have them, someone had said. Not one? she said. The green lady told herself she wouldn't count her steps anymore. She took the medicine that would keep her awake and started to walk away. You know what, she told the people who gave her the medicine, I'd rather not have anything at all. You can do that, the people said. We can't make you take it. They turned away from her. No, the woman said, I am going to take it. Don't you know that I'm the one who's paying for this? That's right, I thought as I watched. They're all sins....

Book excerpt: In “Porn Addict: My Path to Nowhere and Maybe Somewhere,” the author recounts his deeply personal journey through addiction to sex and pornography. From early exposure to the world of porn and the trauma of molestation, the author takes readers through the gradual and often painful progression of his addiction. Despite maintaining a highly functional life on the surface, the author’s addiction to sex and pornography slowly but surely consumed every aspect of his being. Through vivid and often harrowing stories, the author recounts the dangerous behaviors and high-risk activities that characterized his addiction. But as the author explores the darkest corners of his psyche, he also finds hope and healing in unexpected places. “Porn Addict” is a raw and honest memoir that offers a rare glimpse into the mind of someone struggling with addiction. Despite its taboo and stigmatized nature, the author bravely shares his story in the hope of helping others who may be struggling with addiction or know someone who has. This book offers an intimate and enlightening look at the power of addiction and the strength it takes to overcome it. Ultimately, “Porn Addict: My Path to Nowhere and Maybe Somewhere” is a powerful and thought-provoking memoir that challenges readers to confront their own assumptions about addiction, sexuality, and the human experience. It is a book that will stay with readers long after they have turned the final page.

Download or read book Within the Confines written by Jennifer M. Kilty and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western feminists have long treated the rule of law as an essential ingredient of social justice; however, as the contributors to this collection remind us, meaningful justice remains out of reach for many women and racialized minorities precisely because the law turns a blind eye to the inequities that structure their daily lives. In fourteen chapters that open vital debates about the erosion of the welfare state and the media's complicity in concealing political injustice, Within the Confines details the brutal ironies of a society that criminalizes the vulnerable while absolving the elite. Distinctive in its focus on Canada, the book traces the linkages among racial, ethnic, sexual, and economic vulnerability and reveals the inadequacies of legislative approaches to socio-historical problems such as drug trafficking, homelessness, infanticide, and the legacies of settler colonial violence. In accessible prose, the authors dismantle the myths behind topics that are often sensationalized in the media-pornography, single motherhood, sex work, filicide, gangs, domestic abuse, prison conditions, HIV nondisclosure-and present alternative arguments that expose the justice system's role in widening the gap between the rich and the poor. What emerges is a poignant challenge to the neoliberal fable that women and minorities in Western democracies now enjoy full equality and an urgent call to action for those who seek to shift institutional norms in more equitable directions. A valuable resource for a wide range of fields, including criminology, sociology, social anthropology, gender studies, political science, social work, and legal history, this multidisciplinary volume offers a fresh perspective on the disturbingly predictable judgments that criminalized women face in Canada.

Book The Hateful and the Obscene

Download or read book The Hateful and the Obscene written by Leonard W. Sumner and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-11-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a series of landmark decisions since 1990, Canadian courts have shaped a distinctive approach to the regulation of obscenity, hate literature, and child pornography. Missing from the debate, however, has been any attempt to determine whether the legal status quo can be justified by reference to a framework of moral/political principles. The Hateful and the Obscene is intended to fill that gap. L.W. Sumner brings philosophical depth and theoretical rigour to some of the most important and difficult questions concerning free expression. Building on a framework set out by J.S. Mill – that a legal restriction of expression is justified only when the expression in question is harmful to others and when the benefits of the restriction will exceed its costs – Sumner shows how the Canadian courts have replicated Mill's framework in their interpretation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Hateful and the Obscene is a compelling interpretation of freedom of expression that combines serious philosophical thought with a focus on Canadian law, thus maintaining the breadth to deal with both obscenity and hate literature.

Book Nasty Brutish and Short

Download or read book Nasty Brutish and Short written by Mark Totten and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Totten has spent fifteen years learning about youth gangs. He has interviewed over 500 gang members in cities across the country, tracing their lives from infancy to adulthood, and exploring the roots of their involvement in crime and their reliance on violence. This book offers a picture of the reality of youth gangs in Canada. Much of what Totten has to say is at odds with popular ideas. His research leads him to believe that breaking through the circumstances that produce young criminals is far more difficult than most people think. For individuals caught in gang life, exiting that world is next to impossible-in fact, the most common way out is an early death from violence or suicide.

Book Encyclopedia of Domestic Violence and Abuse 2 volumes

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Domestic Violence and Abuse 2 volumes written by Laura L. Finley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, two-volume work examines domestic abuse in the United States and worldwide, providing research, personal stories, and primary documents that reveal the extent of the problem. An estimated 1,300 to 1,800 Americans are murdered by intimate partners each year. Far from being a problem that only impacts women, domestic violence hurts society as a whole both socially as well as financially, with an estimated direct and indirect cost of nearly $6 billion annually in the United States. This book provides a timely and thorough reference for educators, students, scholars and activists seeking to better understand the global issue of domestic abuse. The entries document the history of the domestic violence prevention movement, provide explanations for abuse, identify warning signs of hidden abuse, describe types of victims and offenders, and supply information on interventions and prevention programs. Written by an array of experts in the field, the book also integrates the personal stories of survivors and addresses abuse as a global issue by covering topics such as acid attacks and female genital mutilation.
