Book excerpt: In recent years, the potential significance of chemical and mineralogical influences on the behavior of the post-glacial marine clays has been increasingly recognized by the soils engineering community. The precise relationships are not known, but it seems probable that, in some cases, small differences in chemical factors may explain the differences in behavior between otherwise similar samples. In connection with an investigation of these relationships, the experiments reported in this paper were undertaken to examine the magnitude of chemical change which may occur in low-salinity Leda clay during periods of storage. Pore water extraction devices are described, and the effects on the pore water chemistry of three months storage, under a variety of standard and modified storage procedures, are reported. It is concluded that none of the storage procedures tested is entirely satisfactory, in that potentially significant changes in the pore water chemistry occurred. Finally, it is recommended that pore water chemistry be assessed more often than is the present practice when soils engineering tests are performed on Leda clay and that this be done as soon as possible after the sample is obtained from the field.

Past and recent examples of catastrophic landslides at e.g. Saint-Jean-Vianney in 1971, Rissa in 1979, Finneidfjord in 1996 and Kattmarka in 2009 have illustrated the great mobility of the remolded sensitive clays and their hazardous retrogressive potential. These events call for a better understanding of landslide in sensitive clay terrain to assist authorities with state-of-the-art hazard assessment methods, risk management schemes, mitigation measures and planning. During the last decades the elevated awareness regarding slope movement in sensitive clays has led to major advances in mapping techniques and development of highly sophisticated geotechnical and geophysical investigation tools. Great advances in numerical techniques dealing with progressive failure and landslide kinematic have also lead to increase understanding and predictability of landslides in sensitive clays and their consequences. Book excerpt: A study of the influence of the chemical environment on the engineering behavior of clayey soils warrants an understanding of the chemistry of the pore water present in the soil, together with the physico-chemical properties of the soil minerals. There are several techniques available for the extraction of the pore water from soil samples. Following a review of these techniques, two methods were considered suitable for the extraction of pore water from overconsolidated clay deposits. Pore water was extracted from several clay shales and bentonitic clays from western Canada using the high-pressure mechanical squeezing technique and the saturation extract technique during this study.
