Book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer

Download or read book Literary Translation Reception and Transfer written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Book The Ethics of Earth Art

Download or read book The Ethics of Earth Art written by Amanda Boetzkes and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Ethics of Earth Art, Amanda Boetzkes analyzes the development of the earth art movement, arguing that such diverse artists as Robert Smithson, Ana Mendieta, James Turrell, Jackie Brookner, Olafur Eliasson, Basia Irland, and Ichi Ikeda are connected through their elucidation of the earth as a domain of ethical concern. Boetzkes contends that in basing their works' relationship to the natural world on receptivity rather than representation, earth artists take an ethical stance that counters both the instrumental view that seeks to master nature and the Romantic view that posits a return to a mythical state of unencumbered continuity with nature. By incorporating receptive surfaces into their work - film footage of glaring sunlight, an aperture in a chamber that opens to the sky, or a porous armature on which vegetation grows - earth artists articulate the dilemma of representation that nature presents."--pub. desc.

Book Numerical Conformal Mapping

Download or read book Numerical Conformal Mapping written by Nicolas Papamichael and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique monograph on numerical conformal mapping that gives a comprehensive account of the theoretical, computational and application aspects of the problems of determining conformal modules of quadrilaterals and of mapping conformally onto a rectangle. It contains a detailed study of the theory and application of a domain decomposition method for computing the modules and associated conformal mappings of elongated quadrilaterals, of the type that occur in engineering applications. The reader will find a highly useful and up-to-date survey of available numerical methods and associated computer software for conformal mapping. The book also highlights the crucial role that function theory plays in the development of numerical conformal mapping methods, and illustrates the theoretical insight that can be gained from the results of numerical experiments. This is a valuable resource for mathematicians, who are interested in numerical conformal mapping and wish to study some of the recent developments in the subject, and for engineers and scientists who use, or would like to use, conformal transformations and wish to find out more about the capabilities of modern numerical conformal mapping.

Book The Greek Bucolic Poets

Download or read book The Greek Bucolic Poets written by Theocritus and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MOSCHUS of Syracuse, 2nd century B.C., came next. As a 'grammarian' he wrote a (lost) work on Rhodian dialect. Though he was classed as bucolic, his extant poetry (mainly 'Runaway Love' and the story of 'Europa') is not really pastoral, the 'Lament for Bion' not being Moschus's work. 'Megara' may be Theocritus; but 'The Dead Adonis' is much later. BION of Phlossa near Smyrna lived in Sicily, probably late 2nd and early 1st century B.C. Most of the extant poems are not really bucolic, but 'Lament for Adonis' is floridly brilliant. 'Myrson and Lycidas' is probably not by Bion. The so-called Pattern-Poems, included in the 'bucolic' tradition, are found also in the Greek Anthology.

Book How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone

Download or read book How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone written by Sasa Stanisic and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliant debut novel” about a young Bosnian War refugee who finds the secret to survival in language and stories (Los Angeles Times). For Aleksandar Krsmanović, Grandpa Slavko’s stories endow life in Višegrad with a kaleidoscopic brilliance. Neighbors, friends, and family past and present take on a mythic quality; the River Drina courses through town like the pulse of life itself. So when his grandfather dies suddenly, Aleksandar promises to carry on the tradition. But then soldiers invade Višegrad—a town previously unconscious of racial and religious divides—and it’s no longer important that Aleksandar is the best magician in the nonaligned states; suddenly it is important to have the right last name and to convince the soldiers that Asija, the Muslim girl who turns up in his apartment building, is his sister. Alive with the magic of childhood, the surreality of war and exile, and the power of language, every page of this glittering novel thrums with the joy of storytelling. “Wildly inventive.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Poignant and hauntingly beautiful.” —The Village Voice “A funny, heartbreaking, beautifully written novel.” —The Seattle Times
