Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon's Polish Lancers of the Guard were unique in their appearance and in their loyalty. This book reveals their varied and colorful uniforms as well as their long and loyal service for the Bonaparte cause during the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815). The Poles were the only foreign contingent never to defect from Napoleon's cause, staying faithful to the end - a squadron even accompanied Napoleon into exile on Elba, and the Guard reformed in 1815 to charge at Waterloo. In 1808, when Napoleon was smashing his way through the Spanish armies to get at British forces in the Peninsular, the Poles astounded observers with their extreme acts of courage and military daring. In one memorable instance the Poles captured a defended mountain pass at Somosierra, overrunning four batteries of cannons in the process. It was they who introduced the use of the lance to the French army, adding a new tactical dimension to the use of the cavalry on the battlefield and demonstrated its deadly effects in all of Napoleon's most famous victories - particularly Wagram in 1809. Brave and ruthless in equal measures, this is a fascinating insight into the fighting lives of the legendary Polish Lancers.

Book excerpt: The legendary Dutch 'Red' Lancers – the 2nd Light Horse Lancers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard – were formed in 1810 after the emperor annexed Holland and its army to France. The former hussars of the Dutch Royal Guard got a handsome new uniform, a new weapon, and a hard-driving new colonel in Baron Edouard Colbert. His lancers distinguished themselves in Russia in 1812, at huge cost; in Germany in 1813, and in the Low Countries in 1814. When Napoleon returned from exile in 1815 the Red Lancers were with him until night fell over Waterloo. Ronald Pawly is the world's leading expert on the archival and pictorial record left by this regiment; his detailed text is illustrated with rare portraits and photographs, and eight glowing colour plates of a surprisingly wide variety of uniforms.

Book excerpt: The author of Battle for Paris 1815 examines the uniforms and equipment of the cavalry of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard. Few military formations have attracted more attention than Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, and fewer still have been so extravagantly clothed and accoutered with the finest materials and the brightest colors. On both campaign and parade, the Guard, and especially the cavalry regiments, provided a dazzling display of military grandeur. From the green and gold trappings of the Chasseurs à Cheval, to the multicolored Mamelukes, the Guard cavalry was among the most brilliantly dressed formations ever to grace the field of battle. In compiling this magnificent volume, the author has collected copies of almost all the surviving documents relating to the Guard, which includes a vast amount of material regarding the issuing of dress items, even in some instances down to company level. This information is supported by around 100 contemporary prints, many of which have never been published before, as well as images of original items of equipment held in museums and private collections across the globe. In addition, the renown military artist, Keith Rocco has produced a series of unique paintings commissioned exclusively for this book. This glorious book is, and will remain, unsurpassed as the standard work on the clothing and equipment of the cavalry of the Imperial Guard. It is sure to be treasured by reenactors, wargamers, and modelers, as well as historians and enthusiasts as one of the most important publications ever produced on this most famous of military formations.

Book A Lancer for the Emperor The Recollections of a Polish Officer During the Napoleonic Wars

This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adventures of an Aide to the Emperor and officer of Polish Lancers The author of this riveting first-hand account of the Napoleonic Wars was, in the first years of the 19th century, a young Polish nobleman and a cadet serving in the Prussian dragoons. His first passion, however, was the independence and return to sovereignty of his nation. A chance encounter in 1806, during which he impressed the Emperor Napoleon, launched him into a martial career which he believed would enable him fulfil his part in that liberation. As an officer of voltigeurs with the 9th regiment of Polish infantry he fought and was captured by the Russians before Danzig in 1807. Upon his release he became an orderly officer to the French emperor, serving in Spain and during the campaign and battles that led to the Battle of Wagram in 1808. In recognition of his service, Chlapowski was promoted to squadron leader of the 1st Light Horse Lancers (Polish) of the Imperial Guard in 1811 and in that capacity he served in the disastrous invasion of Russia and during the subsequent retreat from Moscow. The Saxon Campaign of 1813 saw Chlapowski in action again at Bautzen and Hanau, but he resigned his commission when he inadvertently discovered that the hard- pressed Napoleon proposed to betray Poland to secure advantageous peace terms. This edition of Chlapowski's memoir has been newly translated from a later French text and includes interesting annotations introduced from that period together with further observations by the editor. This edition has been rearranged into accessible chapters for reader convenience and accessibility. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book Napoleon s Scouts of the Imperial Guard

Download or read book Napoleon s Scouts of the Imperial Guard written by Ronald Pawly and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven out of Germany after his defeat at Leipzig in 1813, Napoleon seemed to face disaster. Some 345,000 Allied troops were converging on France from the east; and Napoleon had only about 80,000 men. Most of his veterans had been killed in Russia and Germany, and he was short of cavalry to counter the swarms of Cossacks. For his last and possibly most brilliant campaign, Napoleon raised three regiments of mounted Scouts for his Imperial Guard. Through the story of these units the reader can follow Napoleon's dazzling manoeuvres in the campaign of 1814; and their widely varied uniforms are reconstructed in meticulously researched colour plates.

Book Polish Eyewitnesses to Napoleon s 1812 Campaign

Download or read book Polish Eyewitnesses to Napoleon s 1812 Campaign written by Marek Tadeusz Lalowski and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drama of Napoleon’s ill-fated invasion of Russia is captured through the letters and diaries of Polish soldiers who fought with the French. Napoleon’s invasion of Russia cost hundreds of thousands lives and changed the course of history. Europe had never seen an army like the one gathering in Poland in 1812—half a million men in brilliant uniforms and shimmering helmets. Six months later, it was the ghost of an army, frozen and horrified, retreating home. This illuminating volume tells the story of this epic military disaster from the viewpoint of the tens of thousands of Polish soldiers who took part. Some of them were patriots eager to regain independence for their country. Others were charmed by the glory of Napoleonic warfare or were professional soldiers who were simply doing their jobs. They all tell an unrivaled tale of ruthless battles, burning villages, numbing hunger, and biting cold. By the end the great army had been reduced to a pitiless mob and the Polish soldiers, who had set out with such hope, recalled it with horror.
