Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The police force is one of the most distrusted institutions in Pakistan, notorious for its corruption and brutality. In both colonial and postcolonial contexts, directives to confront security threats have empowered law enforcement agents, while the lack of adequate reform has upheld institutional weaknesses. This exploration of policing in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and financial capital, reveals many colonial continuities. Both civilian and military regimes continue to ensure the suppression of the policed via this institution, itself established to militarily subjugate and exploit in the interests of the ruling class. However, contemporary policing practice is not a simple product of its colonial heritage: it has also evolved to confront new challenges and political realities. Based on extensive fieldwork and almost 150 interviews, this ethnographic study reveals a distinctly "postcolonial condition of policing." Mutually reinforcing phenomena of militarisation and informality have been exacerbated by an insecure state that routinely conflates combatting crime, maintaining public order and ensuring national security. This is evident not only in spectacular displays of violence and malpractice, but also in police officers' routine work. Caught in the middle of the country's armed conflicts, their encounters with both state and society are a story of insecurity and uncertainty.

This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""The Motorway Police System in Pakistan is designed in a manner which enables law enforcement and does not encourage corruption. Enforcement action is transparent because of the tools made available and the manner in which SOPs have been prepared. It operates a traffic law which is as good as any in the world. The officers work in eight hour shifts and get weekly holidays by rotation. They live and work on the highway and are well compensated to be able to run two kitchens. In view of this, the Motorway Police has become a model for policing in Pakistan. Asad Jahangir Khan Ex-IG NH&MP."" Thus it is thought provoking: it is revolutionary, opening new vistas and bold horizons of intellectual endeavors. This book is scholarly written and exquisitely presented.

Book Women Police Unfurled in Pakistan Perspective Status and Prospective

Download or read book Women Police Unfurled in Pakistan Perspective Status and Prospective written by Saima Manzoor Arain and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author has trailed emergence of women police, reflected Education, Competence and Performance with transgenerational roots of wisdom from Constable to IGP, psycho-socio-culture mentors to find freedom, justice and unity. This has made her a trailblazer to become an unequivocal representative to reflect the conduct of police: not maintaining Justice Principle; of Unity, not a catchword within its ranks; and of freedom, not the muse of Cohesive Ethics Theorem. This book embeds two modes of existence: the male operational mode, which concentrates on material reliance, power and chauvinism and is the basis of such evils as greed for money and domination; and the female operational mode which is based in affection, in the pleasure of sharing distress of the female, and constructive activity, where she concludes that female talent is still untapped. Hence, this book reflects distinct psychological sketch of the Women Police and pushes readers to muse on it and opens bold horizons of intellectual endeavors.

Book Reforming Pakistan s Police and Law Enforcement Infrastructure

Download or read book Reforming Pakistan s Police and Law Enforcement Infrastructure written by Hassan Abbas and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An effective police force is critical to countering insurgency. In Pakistan, an understaffed and underequipped police force is increasingly called on to manage rising insecurity and militant violence. This report evaluates the obstacles to upgrading the existing police system and recommends traditional and innovative reform options, including major restructuring of the total civilian law enforcement infrastructure, without which the police force cannot be effectively improved. Because Pakistan's police capacity has direct implications for the country's ability to tackle terrorism, the United States and its allies would realize counterterrorism dividends by helping law enforcement efforts through modern training and technical assistance.

Book Does Procedural Justice Leads Towards the Feelings of Compliance and Cooperation With and Empowerment of Law Enforcement Agencies in Pakistan

Download or read book Does Procedural Justice Leads Towards the Feelings of Compliance and Cooperation With and Empowerment of Law Enforcement Agencies in Pakistan written by Sufian Fazal Khan and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose/Objective: The aim of this paper is to identify why or why not police get support and cooperation from the public. Relational models of authority argue that people evaluate the degree to which the police reflect the group's moral values by assessing the fairness of the procedures they use to exercise their authority. Moreover, as per the social identity approach, people's cooperation with the police is motivated in part by their judgment that the police are prototypical representatives of the group's moral value. Combining both approaches in a single theoretical framework, we applied Sunshine & Tyler (2003) model, on citizens' feelings about Pakistani Law enforcement agencies (LEA). In this, we hypothesized that procedural justice aligned police and citizen moral values in form of moral solidarity. This moral solidarity in turn effect LEA's effectiveness through increased cooperation from citizens as their feelings of Compliance and Cooperation with LEAs increased along with the people's will to give power to them.Methodology/Design: Empirical validity was established by conducting a survey using a close-ended questionnaire. Data was collected from 296 citizens of Karachi and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structured equation modeling. The study has used a nonprobability purposive sampling technique while data was analyzed employing PLS-SEM using Smart PLS version 3.2.8.Findings: The results showed that moral solidarity has a positive significant effect on orientation towards policing, whereas procedural justice has a significantly positive effect on moral solidarity and orientation towards policing. Moreover, moral solidarity has a complementary mediating effect between procedural justice and orientation towards policing. Findings also showed that moral solidarity alone as well as along with Orientation towards Policing seems to have a significant and positive mediation in the effect of justice on compliance, cooperation and empowerment.Implications: Community policing encourages that, instead of the incident-oriented method that has continued to dominate in tandem with the professional model, the problem-solving attitude of police be embraced.
