Book Past and Power Public Policies on Memory Debates from Global to Local

Download or read book Past and Power Public Policies on Memory Debates from Global to Local written by Jordi Guixé and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public authorities have not successfully resolved the management of the traumatic memory of the wars, dictatorships and massacres to which the European project was always intended to be a counterpoint. The conflict of memories and the public discourses about the past are latent on ideological, political and cultural levels. However, if in the past the conflict concerning memories tended to develop inside the borders of countries, it has now leapt into the European arena. This has also led to the confrontation and questioning of the great narratives established in the common memory, especially with countries of the East joining the European Union. Each community, group or nation maintains common memories that do not always fit in or converge with a general overall account. The origins of the UB Solidarity Foundation’s European Observatory on Memories lie in these debates, and through this book — which includes the contributions of specialists in multiple disciplines and the speeches that were given at the first international symposium, “Memory and Power: A Transnational Perspective” — it hopes to present some of the key challenges that this conflict of memories has in store for us in the present and in the future.

Book The Struggle for the Past

Download or read book The Struggle for the Past written by Elizabeth Jelin and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all societies—but especially those that have endured political violence—the past is a shifting and contested terrain, never fixed and always intertwined with present-day cultural and political circumstances. Organized around the Argentine experience since the 1970s within the broader context of the Southern Cone and international developments, The Struggle for the Past undertakes an innovative exploration of memory’s dynamic social character. In addition to its analysis of how human rights movements have inflected public memory and democratization, it gives an illuminating account of the emergence and development of Memory Studies as a field of inquiry, lucidly recounting the author’s own intellectual and personal journey during these decades.

Book Social Justice and the City

Download or read book Social Justice and the City written by Nik Heynen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special collection aims to offer insight into the state of geography on questions of social justice and urban life. While using social justice and the city as our starting point may signal inspiration from Harvey’s (1973) book of the same name, the task of examining the emergence of this concept has revealed the deep influence of grassroots urban uprisings of the late 1960s, earlier and contemporary meditations on our urban worlds (Jacobs, 1961, 1969; Lefebvre, 1974; Massey and Catalano, 1978) as well as its enduring significance built upon by many others for years to come. Laws (1994) noted how geographers came to locate social justice struggles in the city through research that examined the ways in which material conditions contributed to poverty and racial and gender inequity, as well as how emergent social movements organized to reshape urban spaces across diverse engagements including the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, anti-war protests, feminist and LGBTQ activism, the American Indian Movement, and disability access. This book originally published as a special issue of Annals of the American Association of Geographers.

Book excerpt: The stage was set for a chilling reality show. Costa Mesa had transformed itself into the epicenter of the immigration debate, and today it is a real microcosm of what is taking place across the nation. This city is a vivid portrayal of how right-wing interest groups politicized local governments. This new breed of politicians and political activists is making every effort possible to stop the flow of immigrant Latinos and U.S.-Latinos into Costa Mesa. Their main objective is to kick Latinos out of this city. Book jacket.

Download or read book Unsettling Statecraft written by Catherine M. Conaghan and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America in the 1980s was marked by the transition to democracy and a turn toward economic orthodoxy. Unsettling Statecraft analyzes this transition in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru, focusing on the political dynamics underlying change and the many disturbing tendencies at work as these countries shed military authoritarianism for civilian rule.Conaghan and Malloy draw on insights from the political economy literature, viewing policy making as a "historically conditioned" process, and they conclude that the disturbing tendencies their research reveals are not due to regional pathology but are part of the more general experience of postmodern democracy.

This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
