Download or read book The Poetry and Mystery of Dreams Classic Reprint written by Charles Godfrey Leland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry and Mystery of Dreams I was first induced to compile this work, by observing that many of the similes of 'the older English and German poets were evidently inspired by the beautiful superstitions of their day, and indeed that all the art of the Middle Ages, whether literary or plastic, rests to a degree upon a supernatural foundation. The mysticism or Spiritualism of herrick is by no means confined to his Fairy Land or Charms and Ceremonies chaucer has carried his respect for Dreamland to the verge of faith, while in shakspeare we find the inspiration of popular belief constantly developed in the most exquisite'fancies. In illustrating the ancient interpretations of dreams by frag ments of modern poetry, I have therefore simply attempted to bring back the latter to the point whence it in many instances originated, and to compare the perfect flower with the first rude cutting from which it sprung. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To believe, or not to believe, is that the question? Mark Stringer offers these poems and journal essays on behalf of the Great Mystery. This book of poems and art is more about asking better questions, rather than imposing opinions or presuming any final conclusions about the nature of reality. Creative wisdom has no gender, no religion or sect ... or a name given to an imaginary entity like a pet for human beings to play with, to confine, or to abuse for that matter. Fighting wars over differences of opinion about the nature of reality is the ultimate evil, and pure human folly. The author feels that inherently, there is no contradiction between so-called "creationism" and evolutionary theory. Scientific observation and the ability to explore the macro/micro cosmos is a natural condition and a result of an awesome intelligent intentional consciousness ... that which without beginning preceeded the "big bang," and that which expands with designs of unlimited variations of light and dark energy. By way of both scientific and spiritual consensus, the universe we are able to observe is expanding at an ever accelerating rate from a common source of origin. This book of poetry and art is a prayer for the wisdom to care for this planet with courage and compassion, and to share its life giving resources equitably. The author observes that Love is not the easy way out, it is simply the only way to go. The author also warns that belief systems which do not consciously honor, observe, understand, and mimic natural life systems ... are destined to fail. Forever.

Book Poetry and Dreams Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poetry and Dreams Classic Reprint written by F. C. Prescott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and Dreams Poetry is proverbially difficult to define and explain. The reason for this difficulty seems to lie partly in the subject itself and partly in our attitude toward it. The subject is indeed deep and complex. The production of poetry is still, as it has always been, a mysterious process, even to the poets themselves; while even the most devoted and enlightened readers of poetry still find mystery in its action and effect. Poetry, as Shelley believed, "acts in a divine and unapprehended manner, beyond and above consciousness." Many poets - for example Shelley and Wordsworth - in defining poetry resort to poetical figures; others, like our poet of democracy, avoid definition scrupulously. "Let me not dare," says Walt Whitman, "to attempt a definition of poetry, nor answer the question what it is. Like religion, love, nature, while these terms are indispensable, and we all give sufficiently accurate meaning to them, in my opinion no definition that has ever been made sufficiently encloses the name poetry." Perhaps, however, mystery in the subject engenders superstition, and leads us to regard poetry with supine reverence and wonder. We should indeed worship our great poets, as the men of old did their bards and prophets; but not abjectly, as savages do their medicine men. We speak of the "divine" Shakespeare, perhaps knowing too little of this poet's life to recognize how much he shared our common humanity. We call poetry divine, which is another way of saying that it is still inexplicable to us. All things are of God; and in the subject of poetry, as in others, our increasing knowledge should lead us to clearer understanding. We need make no apology, then, for attempting to approach this mystery. There is some resemblance and unexplained relation between poetry and dreams. The poet and the dreamer are somehow alike in their faculty of vision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1950, this title includes instances of dreams in published records from both British and American societies of psychical research, covering six decades. This work had been previously inaccessible to the ordinary reader. Other stories have come from friends and acquaintances of the author and in his introduction he states that: ‘the chief purpose of this collection is to present examples of apparently significant dreams, those that "come true", there will be no effort in these pages to debate possible explanations based on known laws, either of chance or of psychology. Readers are able to exercise their own ingenuity to this end. The material is offered here simply as evidence of a striking phenomenon in human consciousness, which, instead of being brushed aside as superstition, calls for serious study. It may have a profound bearing on the riddle of human personality.’

Book excerpt: In this remarkable and unique work, award-winning poet Sarah Arvio gives us a memoir about coming to terms with a life in crisis through the study of dreams. As a young woman, threatened by disturbing visions, Arvio went into psychoanalysis to save herself. The result is a riveting sequence of dream poems, followed by “Notes.” The poems, in the form of irregular sonnets, describe her dreamworld: a realm of beauty and terror emblazoned with recurring colors and images—gold, blood red, robin’s-egg blue, snakes, swarms of razors, suitcases, playing cards, a catwalk. The Notes, also exquisitely readable, unfold the meaning of the dreams—as told to her analyst—and recount the enlightening and sometimes harrowing process of unlocking memories, starting with the diaries she burned to make herself forget. Arvio’s explorations lead her back to her younger self—and to a life-changing understanding that will fascinate readers. An utterly original work of art and a groundbreaking portrayal of the power of dream interpretation to resolve psychic distress, this stunning book illumines the poetic logic of the dreaming mind; it also shows us, with surpassing poignancy, how tender and fragile is the mind of an adolescent girl.

We need make no apology, then, for attempting to approach this mystery. There is some resemblance and unexplained relation between poetry and dreams. The poet and the dreamer are somehow alike in their faculty of vision. This relation is indicated by the uses of language, which, spontaneously expressing the sense of mankind, often reveal psychological truth not otherwise readily discovered. The poets have traditionally been dreamers, from the "dreamer Merlin" to the latest youth who "dreams" and rhymes. The poet writes of "dreams which wave before the half-shut eye." The word dream is thus constantly used by critics in describing the poet's work. "The true poet," says Charles Lamb, "dreams being awake." Poetry is defined by Sully Prudhomme as "le rêve par lequel l'homme aspire à une vie supérieure." The poets themselves in different times and different countries testify to the same effect, seeing not merely a metaphorical resemblance but an essential relation between dreams and poetry....

Book excerpt: Message to my Readers I grew up in Brooklyn New York. Ive been a restless man. All the world's dreams are in my eyes. These poems range over many terrains of the Earth and terrains of my heart. These poems are an overflow, undertow, personally universal, emotionally logical, bodily spiritual expression of love, existentially divine and beyond analysis. My poems exist between lucidity and trance, meaning and nonsense, depth and invisibility. They are Liminal. They serve as a doorway to the ineffable, a cryptic map, a cry, a journey into mayhem, myth, mystery. Poetry, at bottom, is inspired by the Muse: a female mythic form through which insight, wisdom, beauty and the arts are given. Often in a cryptic manner. A muse serves as a mouth, a door, an instrument. A muse takes many forms, speaks any language, exists in any time. She comes by invitation, love, seduction, silence. My poems see things. And they lend me their sight, their vision. I seek the spirit in poetry, how to elicit from my deeper self that which is given by the archetypal, and not with the game of verse or the babbling rhetoric of popular events. I seek the essential, the profound, to make of them a fresh insight into ourselves. To make us unforgettable. Divination: divinare , to be inspired by a god. It is defined as the practice of attempting to discover hidden knowledge by supernatural means. Perception by intuition; instinctive foresight. "Poetry is a divination of the spiritual in the things of sense which expresses itself in the things of sense, and in a delight of sense." [Jacques Maritain, Creative Intuition in Art and Poetry, Pantheon, 1953] Divination: These poems are divinations in the sense that they go beyond the surface, beyond the root, to the seed of the poems heart. Knowing the seed you know the flowering. In that way, in the presence of the source of hidden knowledge, is revealed what is to come. The revelation must be divined from the spirit in the poem. It requires deep listening. Dream: Dream is the embryo of vision. Dreams are the blood of the soul. There are dreams meant to sustain you, and those meant to be lived. Dreams that carry you, and dreams you carry. Dreams of silence, and dreams of song. Dreams die, like the phases of the moon. Once, they lit your way; then they turn to darkness. The dream is a belly. It is a womb that carries many creatures; a world. It is an ark. A nest. Poetry, love, canticles, bodies, mouths, pomegranates My desire is written in my eyes, my ears, my mouth. I sing within surreal dreams and mad desires. I imprint my dream on the wheel of desire; I place it in the womb of the sea. Cheja
