Book Womens Poems of Protest and Resistance Honduras

Download or read book Womens Poems of Protest and Resistance Honduras written by Varias Autoras and published by Casasola Editores. This book was released on 2014-12-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this anthology, was researched, compiled, prologued, and edited by poet Lety Elvir in September 2013 in the midst of death threats against several of its authors, unprecedented acts of violence against journalists and other defenders of the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression, and rampant attacks on community organizers and farmers claiming land rights, in a seemingly lawless environment of impunity for the perpetrators of certain crimes. Honduras is touted for touristic purposes by an informational site as "a vibrant country, brimming with clear turquoise waters, pristine beaches, lush jungles, breathtaking mountains, challenging rivers, and fascinating ancient ruins," whose people are known for "the warmth of Honduran hospitality." But a disclaimer appears: "The U.S. State Department notes that the security situation in the country is precarious, due to the country's high crime rate and frequent political demonstrations." Despite bilateral U.S.- Honduras agreements, the State Department recognizes the prevailing level of criminality: The vast majority of serious crimes in Honduras, including those against U.S. citizens, are never solved. Members of the Honduran National Police are known to engage in criminal activity, including murder and car theft. The Government of Honduras lacks sufficient resources to properly investigate and prosecute cases, and police often lack vehicles or fuel to respond to calls for assistance. In practice, this means police may take hours to arrive at the scene of a violent crime, or may not respond at all. As a result, criminals operate with a high degree of impunity throughout Honduras. The Honduran government is in the early stages of substantial reforms to its criminal justice institutions.

Book Culture and Customs of Honduras

Download or read book Culture and Customs of Honduras written by Janet N. Gold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive look at contemporary life in the small Latin American nation allows high school students and general readers to explore the many facets of Honduran life and culture. More and more Hondurans and scholars today are becoming aware of the diversity in the nation, and are realizing that rather than a single, homogeneous culture, Honduras is made up of many different cultures. Gold incorporates this contemporary cultural consciousness in her treatment of Honduras's regional and linguistic diversity as well as in her descriptions of Honduras's indigenous communities. Key elements of the work include a look at national identity and cultural diversity, as well as an in-depth study of indigenous Honduras. Other chapters examine religion, as well as daily routines, cuisine, dress, media, sports, festivals, literature and oral storytelling, traditional crafts, visual arts, and music and dance. Ideal for high school students studying world culture, Latin American studies, and anthropology, as well as for general readers interested in the subject, Culture and Customs of Honduras is an essential addition for library shelves.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book, ably edited by Dr. Racz, attempt to read Borges in this counter-monumental mode using the centennial of his birth as a point of departure. It is a fitting way to do Borges in our tangled era, keenly aware of the perils of public memorializing-in Buenos Aires's Memory Park to the disappeared, in New York's Ground Zero memorial to the blown apart-yet striving for the kind of open and fluid remembrance of the past that encourages new telling(s) of what inevitably will become old tales.

Book The Imaginary in the Writing of Latin American Author Amanda Labarca Hubertson 1886 1975

Download or read book The Imaginary in the Writing of Latin American Author Amanda Labarca Hubertson 1886 1975 written by Sandra M. Boschetto-Sandoval and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thematic study is the only in-depth investigation into the fictional and testimonial literature of Amanda Labarca Hubertson, Chilean educator, reformer, and promoter of women's rights. These imaginary writings include such little-known works as her semi-autobiographical novel, En tierras extranas (1915), the short novel, La lampara maravillosa (1921), the collection of short stories entitled Cuentos a mi senor, the testimonial Meditaciones and Meditaciones breves (1928-1931), and the marginal journal fragments, Desvelos en el alba (1945). A preliminary chapter also addresses the controversy surrounding her published literary thesis, La novela castellana de hoi [sic, 1906]. The study corrects some interpretive errors regarding earlier scholarship on Labarca's perceived feminist writings by examining the sexual (gendered) complexities that imprint themselves in Labarca's fictional work and literary criticism. While she may be criticized for omitting any materialist analysis of power, in her literature Labarca attempted to effect change in the social order by pointing out its contradictions. Paradoxically, a close reading of Labarca's dangerously contradictory and yet amorous

Book excerpt: With his seductively entertaining new novel, The Big Banana, Roberto Quesada invokes the magic of great Latin American fiction as he follows the struggles of an ensemble cast of endearingly eccentric characters chasing their dreams in New York City. Meet Eduardo, the Honduran screen-star-wannabe; his great love, Miriam whose obsession with Bond „ James Bond (the one played by Roger Moore, quite specifically) „ leads to a purely un-accidental international encounter; and a host of zany Central and South American acquaintances „ especially the Chilean Casagrande, the fun-loving, magnanimous, professionally unemployed mystic-philosopher-musician-singer who brings them all together. Against the backdrop of their hardscrabble everyday lives, Quesada wields a bold brush to paint in broad strokes a festive mural awash in the vivid colors of the outlandish fantasies that drive Eduardo and his friends. Ultimately, the elusive prize of friendship and laughter dwarf the seemingly larger goals of money and success.
