Book excerpt: 'So my mind sinks in this immensity: and foundering is sweet in such a sea' Leopardi's Canti is one of the most influential poetic works of the nineteenth century, and a landmark achievement in Italian verse. Revisited and reorganized over his lifetime, this extraordinary work was described by Leopardi as a 'reliquary' for his ideas, feelings and deepest preoccupations. It encompasses drastic shifts in tone and material, and includes early personal elegies and idylls; radical public poems on history and politics; philosophical satires; his great, dark, despairing odes such as 'To Silvia'; and later masterworks such as 'The Setting of the Moon', written not long before Leopardi's death. Infused with classical allusion and nostalgia, yet disarmingly modern in their spare, meditative style and their sense of alienation and scepticism, the Canti influenced the following two centuries of Western lyric poetry, and inspired thinkers and writers from Schopenhauer and Nietzsche to Beckett and Lowell. Jonathan Galassi's new translation sensitively responds to the musicality of the Canti, while his introduction discusses the paradoxes of Leopardi's life and work. This edition also contains notes, a chronology, a bibliography and notes on the Canti's structure. Translated with notes and an introduction by JONATHAN GALASSI

Book excerpt: Selected Poems by Giacomo Leopardi. (16 poems in the English Translation) Leopardi's Canti were written in 1835. This collection of lyric poetry is considered one of the most significant works of Italian literature. The order of the poems here published in the English translations by Alan Marshfield, Tim Chilcott, A. S. Kline, and Frederick Townsend, does not follow their original position within the structure of Leopardi's Canti. The 16 poems here published are the most valuable versions from Leopardi's Canti, available in the English language. Giacomo Leopardi, (born June 29, 1798, Recanati, Papal States-died June 14, 1837, Naples), Italian poet, scholar, and philosopher whose outstanding scholarly and philosophical works and superb lyric poetry place him among the great writers of the 19th century. Leopardi has aestheticized the theme of metaphysical contemplation and placed emphasis on 'hope' as a fulcrum for all art, the fall of which is anathema to the ego and for the World.

Book An Introduction to Leopardi s Canti

Download or read book An Introduction to Leopardi s Canti written by Pamela Williams and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 1997 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a sense in which one might say, as Leopardi did say about poetry, that his poems are born of illusion, yet what they register is a lament over its loss and a persistent rejection of all deception. The Canti are conspicuously influenced by illusion, but paradoxically dominated by a continual taking the measure, as it were, of truth, of a human and cosmic reality which simply is what it is. In generalising his convictions the poet does make a certain claim on our belief and he challenges us to take what he says seriously. However, the merit of the poems themselves is the full expression of those convictions; it is this aspect that this Introduction addresses, and not whether we should agree or disagree with Leopardi. Its aim is to explain in order to help appreciate what is found on the page. It is an analysis of the poems and an attempt to create a coherent and comprehensive structure for students in which nearly all the Canti can be considered from several points of view.

Download or read book The Poems Canti Of Leopardi Classic Reprint written by J. M. Morrison and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems ('Canti') Of Leopardi Giacomo Leopardi was born on June 29, 1798, at Recanati, a small country town in the March of Ancona. He was of noble descent on both father and mother's side, but the family was in somewhat straitened circumstances. His father, Count Leopardi, lived retired from the world, a pedant of narrow views, but of considerable erudition; a bigot who held ultramontane and medieval notions as to the prerogatives and position of the clergy and the Church, whose almost servilely devoted son he was; a father who utterly failed, if indeed he ever tried, to understand his gifted son, or win his sympathy and affection. He destined Giacomo for the Church, and could never forgive him for his refusal to devote his life to her service. The young Leopardi was sickly as a boy even, and his over-studious habits from his earliest years utterly undermined a constitution which would never have been robust. He spent his boyhood's days unchecked in his father's well-stocked library, omnivorously devouring and assimilating all that came to his hands, till at the age of sixteen already he had become a self-taught prodigy of learning. He had read through all the ancient classics, and mastered several European modern languages and Hebrew besides. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These translations of the major poems of Giacomo Leopardi (1798--1837) render into modern English verse the work of a writer who is widely regarded as the greatest lyric poet in the Italian literary tradition. In spite of this reputation, and in spite of a number of nineteenth-and twentieth-century translations, Leopardi's poems have never "come over" into English in such a way as to guarantee their author a recognition comparable to that of other great European Romantic poets. By catching something of Leopardi's cadences and tonality in a version that still reads as idiomatic modern English (with an occasional Irish or American accent), Leopardi: Selected Poems should win for the Italian poet the wider appreciative audience he deserves. His themes are mutability, landscape, love; his attitude, one of unflinching realism in the face of unavoidable human loss. But the manners of the poems are a unique amalgam of philosophical toughness and the lyrically bittersweet. In a way more pure and distilled than most others in the Western tradition, these poems are truly what Matthew Arnold asked all poetry to be, a "criticism of life." The translator's aim is to convey something of the profundity and something of the sheer poetic achievement of Leopardi's inestimable Canti.
