Book excerpt: From more than nine hundred poems left behind at the poet's death, Donald Justice has chosen the seventy-four representative works that comprise The Comma After Love: Selected Poems of Raeburn Miller: By turns rueful and amused, intimate and restrained, these poems speak movingly about the difficulties of love and faith, the pleasures of friendship and poetry, the lonliness and disappointments of the solitary life. In his introduction to this volume, Donald Justice calls Raeburn Miller a natural poet who found writing a thing he did simply as a part, an important part, of staying alive, and discovers in these poems an expansive and unshakably romantic spirit that drives the work and in the end proves exhilarating.

Book A Glossary of Words and Phrases in the Oral Performing and Dramatic Literatures of the Jin Yuan and Ming

Download or read book A Glossary of Words and Phrases in the Oral Performing and Dramatic Literatures of the Jin Yuan and Ming written by Dale Johnson and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, the oral performing and dramatic literatures of China from 1200 to 1600 CE were considered some of the most difficult texts in the Chinese corpus. They included ballad medleys, comic farces, Yuan music dramas, Ming music dramas, and the novel Shuihu zhuan. The Japanese scholars who first dedicated themselves to study these works in the mid-twentieth century were considered daring. As late as 1981, no comprehensive dictionary or glossary for this literature existed in any language, Asian or Western. A Glossary of Words and Phrases fills this gap for Western readers, allowing even a relative novice who has resonable command of Chinese to read, translate, and appreciate this great body of literature with an ease undreamed of even two decades ago. The Glossary is organized into approximately 8,000 entries based on the reading notes and glosses found in various dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, and editions of works from the period. Main entries are listed alphabetically in the pinyin romanization system. In addition to glosses, entries include symbolic annotations, guides to pronunciation, and text citations. The result is a broadly useful glossary serving the needs of students of this literature as well as scholars researching Jin and Yuan language and its usage.

Download or read book Egil the Viking Poet written by Laurence de Looze and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egil, the Viking Poet focuses on one of the best-known Icelandic sagas, that of the extraordinary hero Egil Skallagrimsson. Descended from a lineage of trolls, shape-shifters, and warriors, Egil’s transformation from a precocious and murderous child into a raider, mercenary, litigant, landholder, and poet epitomizes the many facets of Viking legend. The contributors to this collection of essays approach Egil’s story from a variety of perspectives, including psychology, philology, network theory, social history, and literary theory. Strikingly original, their essays will appeal not only to dedicated students of Old Norse-Icelandic literature but also to those working in the fields of Viking studies, comparative ethnology, and folklore.

Book An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870 2005 Autobiographies novels poetry letters historical works natural history and science lingiustics painting and the other arts politics psychopathology biography miscellaneous dissertations

Download or read book An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870 2005 Autobiographies novels poetry letters historical works natural history and science lingiustics painting and the other arts politics psychopathology biography miscellaneous dissertations written by Michael Robinson and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This copiously annotated bibliography documents and examines the whole range of commentary on Strindberg's works and activity in many fields besides the plays for which he is internationally best known. These include his prose fiction and poetry, his work as an historian and natural historian, and his relationship to the other arts, most notably his painting. It is concerned with both lasting works of literary and dramatic criticism, as well as reviews of his books and plays in the theatre, and some more ephemeral material, all of this in several languages. Organised generically and by subject and individual work, the bibliography enables the reader to trace the changing impact of Strindberg and his works in various countries and during different periods. It is thus very much a study in reception as well as a bibliographical record of published material. It traces the developing image of Strindberg and his writing both during his lifetime and in subsequent years, and with frequent cross reference offers a comprehensive overview of a literary and existential project that has rarely been matched for its multifaceted diversity. The bibliography is published in three parts. Volume 1, General Studies (978-0-947623-81-4) and Volume 2, The Plays (978-0-947623-82-1) are also now available. Michael Robinson is Emeritus Professor of Drama and Scandinavian Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.
