There are unspoken risks, and I’m not referring to Lenore’s “accident.” Everything I’ve been working toward could vanish in an instant. After what happened to Theo, we need to tread carefully. That’s not our only concern. We think we’ve discovered where the Disbelievers have been recruiting students. We plan to sneak inside, gather intel, and then get out. No harm in that, right? Infiltrating the place won’t be easy, but my friends have my back. We’re smart, and we won’t get caught.

Since joining a super-secret study group, I've learned new things and met new people. But something doesn't smell right, and it's not last week's leftover sandwich in my book bag. I've got a hunch that there's more than meets the eye to this Vincent guy. So what if he has a powerful Kindred and can move about a room like a ghost? He's friends with my cousin, and my cousin should be expelled for things he's said about The Prophet. Lenore thinks Vincent's one of us, but anyone who's friends with Bertrand can't be trusted. I'll do whatever it takes to expose him for what he is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe -(originally published as "The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy") is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1842. The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ball in seven rooms of the abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms. Prospero dies after confronting this stranger, whose "costume" proves to contain nothing tangible inside it; the guests also die in turn. Plot summary: The story takes place at the castellated abbey of the "happy and dauntless and sagacious" Prince Prospero. Prospero and 1,000 other nobles have taken refuge in this walled abbey to escape the Red Death, a terrible plague with gruesome symptoms that has swept over the land. Victims are overcome by "sharp pains", "sudden dizziness", and "profuse bleeding at the pores", and die within half an hour. Prospero and his court are indifferent to the sufferings of the population at large; they intend to await the end of the plague in luxury and safety behind the walls of their secure refuge, having welded the doors shut to ensure no one enters or leaves. Prospero holds a masquerade ball one night to entertain his guests in seven colored rooms of the abbey. Each of the first six rooms is decorated and illuminated in a specific color: blue, purple, green, orange, white, and violet. The last room is decorated in black and is illuminated by a scarlet light, "a deep blood color" cast from its stained glass windows. Because of this chilling pairing of colors, very few guests are brave enough to venture into the seventh room. A large ebony clock stands in this room and ominously chimes each hour, upon which everyone stops talking or dancing and the orchestra stops playing. Once the chiming stops, everyone immediately resumes the masquerade. As nightfall approaches, none of the guests enter the final room as it takes on a more eerie display and the additional chimes of the clock make them uneasy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masque of the Red Death is a classic short story by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1842 and considered an emblematic tale of gothic fiction. Featuring many of the tropes which define the genre, we witness in its pages a grim setting of a castle, and its multiple rooms which themselves resemble aspects of human personality. The story is not without its ironies: Prospero's castle, while mighty as an ideal guard against the disease ravaging the lands outside, ultimately serves an as an oppressor to the Prince Prospero, his wealthy guests, and his retinue. As the tension ratchets and the great and majestic masquerade turns to one of horror, we witness Poe's evocative flair for grim and horrific prose. Given the description of its symptoms, it is possible that the titular Red Death was inspired by tuberculosis, which was rife among the European continent throughout the 19th century. The Red Death somewhat resembles a highly accelerated form of consumption, which was a terror in society.
