Are the developing countries wrong to assume that their economic advancement depends on a transfer of wealth from the richer nations? Sir W. Arthur Lewis's provocative analysis of the present economic order and its origins suggests that the answer to both questions is yes. Professor Lewis perceptively illuminates aspects of recent economic history that have often been overlooked by observers of international affairs. He asks first how the world came to be divided into countries exporting manufactures and countries exporting primary commodities. High agricultural productivity and a good investment climate allowed countries in Northwest Europe to industrialize rapidly, while the favorable terms of trade they enjoyed assured them and the temperate lands to which Europeans migrated of continuing dominance over the tropical countries. At the core of the author's argument lies the contention that as the structure of international trade changes, the tropical countries move rapidly toward becoming net importers of agricultural commodities and net exporters of manufactures. Even so, they continue to depend on the markets of the richer countries for their growth, and they continue to trade on unfavorable terms. Both of these disadvantages, he concludes, stem from large agricultural sectors with low productivity and will disappear only as the technology of tropical food production is revolutionized. In Cuba, where Ifá and Santería emerged as an interrelated, Yorùbá-inspired ritual complex, worshippers are driven to “African traditionalism” by its promise of efficacy: they find Yorùbá approaches more powerful, potent, and efficacious. In the first book-length study on music and Ifá, Ruthie Meadows draws on extensive, multisited fieldwork in Cuba and Yorùbáland, Nigeria, to examine the controversial “Nigerian-style” ritual movement in Cuban Ifá divination. Meadows uses feminist and queer of color theory along with critical studies of Africanity to excavate the relation between utility and affect within translocal ritual music circulations. Meadows traces how translocal Ifá priestesses (ìyánífá), female batá drummers (bataleras), and priests (babaláwo) harness Yorùbá-centric approaches to ritual music and sound to heighten efficacy, achieve desired ritual outcomes, and reshape the conditions of their lives. Within a contentious religious landscape marked by the idiosyncrasies of revolutionary state policy, Nigerian-style Ifá-Òrìṣà is leveraged to transform femininity and masculinity, state religious policy, and transatlantic ritual authority on the island.

Los participantes del estudio fueron un total de cinco profesionales de la salud, de ambos géneros que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión establecidos por la investigadora. Se desarrolló una guía de preguntas abiertas a seguir durante la entrevista semi-estructurada grabada. El guía de preguntas consistió de un total de 22 preguntas dividas en (3) partes (Apéndice B). Se le leyó y se le entregó una hoja de consentimiento y confidencialidad (Apéndice A). A través de estas cinco entrevistas, se logró obtener la percepción y experiencia de estos profesionales de la salud que hayan trabajando e interviniendo con personas envejecidas sobrevivientes de maltrato. Se identificó la teoría de la actividad y satisfacción de la vida como el marco de referencia. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la gran necesidad que existe para sensibilizarnos y aumentar la educación del proceso de envejecimiento para poder identificar e intervenir en casos de maltrato de nuestra población envejecida. He llegado a la conclusión, que es urgente entender el proceso del envejecimiento, las necesidades y el valor de esta etapa de la vida. Dediquemos nuestro tiempo y esfuerzo para compartir nuestra atención, cariño y afecto con nuestros envejecidos que tanto ellos también dieron y aportaron en nuestra crianza y desarrollo.
