Book International Monitoring of Plebiscites Referenda and National Elections

Download or read book International Monitoring of Plebiscites Referenda and National Elections written by Yves Beigbeder and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International monitoring of plebiscites, referenda and national elections has given a guarantee to the populations and the countries directly involved, and to the international community, that the people themselves have been able to exercise freely their right to self-determination through these processes. By focusing international attention on an internal electoral process, international monitoring may deter fraud by government, armed forces or electoral authorities. It shows international support for democracy and elections, as well as for human rights. While the international monitoring of elections does not guarantee that a dictatorship will evolve peacefully into a pluralist democracy, free and periodic elections are an essential prerequisite to the creation and maintenance of democracy, which is itself a prerequisite for the protection and promotion of human rights. The United Nations and other international organizations and groups are openly supporting the world's evolution towards democracy. This book will be of great use for those who are actively involved in international monitoring as well as for researchers in the field of democracy and human rights.

Book Post World War One Plebiscites and Their Legacies

Download or read book Post World War One Plebiscites and Their Legacies written by Sergiusz Bober and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plebiscites, or referendums, are epitomes of direct democracy and the right of self-determination. While direct democracy has always been a key subject in the theory and practice of western liberal democracies, the issue of self-determination has been propelled to the fore by the hegemonistic moves of Russia. By providing a historical analysis of the post-World War One plebiscites, this book deals with enduring, painfully contemporary, and in in any case fundamental, concepts. The contributors to this edited volume approach the referendums comparatively. After grounding the analysis theoretically, the authors look at detailed aspects of individual cases, with the two plebiscites held in the Danish-German border region of Schleswig in the winter of 1920 as points of departure. They then extend the exploration through the inter-war period and address the effects of border delimitations on everyday life or gender roles in the context of ethnic mobilization. Finally, the book places the post-World War One plebiscites in a long-term perspective. The concluding essays assess, among others, the applicability of plebiscitary solutions to contemporary conflicts, taking into consideration issues of borders, religion, language, identity, and minority rights.

Book The 1961 Cameroon Plebiscite Choice or Betrayal

Download or read book The 1961 Cameroon Plebiscite Choice or Betrayal written by John Percival and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations-organised plebiscite on 11 February 1961 was one of the most significant events in the history of the southern and northern parts of the British-administered trust territory in Cameroon. John Percival was sent by the then Colonial Office as part of the team to oversee the process. This book captures the story of the plebiscite in all its dimensions and intricacies and celebrates the author's admiration for things African through a series of reminiscences of what life was like in the 1960s, both for the Africans themselves and for John Percival as a very young man. The complex story is also a series of reflections about the effect of the modern world on Africa. It is a thorough, insightful, rich and enlightening first-hand source on a political landmark that has never been told before in this way. In a vivid style with a great sense of humour, Percival's witty, cogent, eyewitness and active-participant account deconstructs the rumours and misrepresentations about the February 1961 Plebiscite which was a prelude to reunification and to the present day politics of 'belonging' in Cameroon. "One of the major merits of this book is to provide us with a deeper insight into the role of those actors who have never been the subject of plebiscite studies, namely the Plebiscite Supervisory Officers." - Piet Konings, African Studies Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands John Percival-Anthropologist, Writer, Television Broadcaster of many innovative BBC series on the environment, history and anthropology. As a young graduate he was recruited and sent to serve in the Southern Cameroons as a Plesbiscite Supervisory Officer in 1961. He died in 2005 after a recent return visit to Cameroon with Nigel Wenban-Smith who writes an epilogue. This posthumous memoir has been edited by his wife, Lalage Neal.

Book Puerto Rico s Plebiscites

Download or read book Puerto Rico s Plebiscites written by Juan Jose Nolla-Acosta and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of the results of all the plebiscites on Statehood held by Puerto Rico in 1967, 1993, 1998 and 2012. Puerto Rico has been a US territory since 1898, and Puerto Ricans are American citizens since 1917. Because of the current territorial status, American citizens of Puerto Rico don't have voting representation in Congress and can't participate in the election of the President of the US. In 2012, after three failed plebiscites, the people of Puerto Rico gave a clear message to change their current status and seek admission as the 51st state. The plebiscite contained two questions. The 1st question asked voters to decide if they wanted to keep the current territorial status. 54%% voted against the current status. The 2nd question asked voters to choose a non territorial option between Statehood, Independence and Free Association. 61%% voted for Statehood. Now is the time for Congress to act, and approve enabling legislation to make Puerto Rico state 51 of the USA.

Book excerpt: The first English-language monograph on the Slovak-Polish border in 1918-47 explores the interplay of politics, diplomacy, moral principles and self-determination.
