Download or read book Book Parts written by Dennis Duncan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would an anatomy of the book look like? There is the main text, of course, the file that the author proudly submits to their publisher. But around this, hemming it in on the page or enclosing it at the front and back of the book, there are dozens of other texts - page numbers and running heads, copyright statements and errata lists - each possessed of particular conventions, each with their own lively histories. To consider these paratexts - recalling them from the margins, letting them take centre stage - is to be reminded that no book is the sole work of the author whose name appears on the cover; rather, every book is the sum of a series of collaborations. It is to be reminded, also, that not everything is intended for us, the readers. There are sections0that are solely directed at others - binders, librarians, lawyers - parts of the book that, if they are working well, are working discreetly, like a theatrical prompt, whispering out of the audience's ear-shot. 0'Book Parts' is a bold and imaginative intervention in the fast growing field of book history: it pulls the book apart. Over twenty-two chapters, 'Book Parts' tells the story of the components of the book: from title pages to endleaves; from dust jackets to indexes-and just about everything in between. 'Book Parts' covers a broad historical range that runs from the pre-print era to the digital, bringing together the expertise of some of the most exciting scholars working on book history today in order to shine a new light on these elements hiding in plain sight in the books we all read.

Book Always at War

  • ISBN : 1682472493
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Always at War written by Melvin G. Deaile and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Always at War is the story of Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the early decades of the Cold War. More than a simple history, it describes how an organization dominated by experienced World War II airmen developed a unique culture that thrives to this day. Strategic Air Command was created because of the Air Force’s internal beliefs, but the organization evolved as it responded to the external environment created by the Cold War. In the aftermath of World War II and the creation of an independent air service, the Air Force formed SAC because of a belief in the military potential of strategic bombing centralized under one commander. As the Cold War intensified, so did SAC’s mission. In order to prepare SAC’s “warriors” to daily fight an enemy they did not see, as well as to handle the world’s most dangerous arsenal, the command, led by General Curtis LeMay, emphasized security, personal responsibility, and competition among the command. Its resources, political influence, and manning grew as did its “culture” until reaching its peak during the Cuban Missile Crisis. SAC became synonymous with the Cold War and its culture forever changed the Air Force as well as those who served.

Book Journeys into Terror

Download or read book Journeys into Terror written by Cynthia J. Miller and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times, explorers and adventurers have captured popular imagination with their frightening narratives of travels gone wrong. Usually, these stories heavily feature the exotic or unknown, and can transform any journey into a nightmare. Stories of such horrific happenings have a long and rich history that stretches from folktales to contemporary media narratives. This work presents eighteen essays that explore the ways in which these texts reflect and shape our fear and fascination surrounding travel, posing new questions about the "geographies of evil" and how our notions of "terrible places" and their inhabitants change over time. The volume's five thematic sections offer new insights into how power, privilege, uncanny landscapes, misbegotten quests, hellish commutes and deadly vacations can turn our travels into terror.

Book Playbooks and their Readers in Early Modern England

Download or read book Playbooks and their Readers in Early Modern England written by Hannah August and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-04-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive examination of commercial drama as a reading genre in early modern England. Taking as its focus pre-Restoration printed drama’s most common format, the single-play quarto playbook, it interrogates what the form and content of these playbooks can tell us about who their earliest readers were, why they might have wanted to read contemporary commercial drama, and how they responded to the printed versions of plays that had initially been performed in the playhouses of early modern London. Focusing on professional plays printed in quarto between 1584 and 1660, the book juxtaposes the implications of material and paratextual evidence with analysis of historical traces of playreading in extant playbooks and manuscript commonplace books. In doing so, it presents more detailed and nuanced conclusions than have previously been enabled by studies focused on works by one author or on a single type of evidence.

Book H H Holmes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adam Selzer
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 1510740856
  • Pages : 645 pages

Download or read book H H Holmes written by Adam Selzer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's first and most notorious serial killer and his diabolical killing spree during the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, now updated with a new afterword discussing Holmes' exhumation on American Ripper. H. H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil is the first truly comprehensive book examining the life and career of a murderer who has become one of America’s great supervillains. It reveals not only the true story but how the legend evolved, taking advantage of hundreds of primary sources that have never been examined before, including legal documents, letters, articles, and records that have been buried in archives for more than a century. Though Holmes has become just as famous now as he was in 1895, a deep analysis of contemporary materials makes very clear how much of the story as we know came from reporters who were nowhere near the action, a dangerously unqualified new police chief, and, not least, lies invented by Holmes himself. Selzer has unearthed tons of stunning new data about Holmes, weaving together turn-of-the-century America, the killer’s background, and the wild cast of characters who circulated in and about the famous “castle” building. This book will be the first truly accurate account of what really happened in Holmes’s castle of horror, and now includes an afterword detailing the author's participation in Holmes' exhumation on the TV series, American Ripper. Exhaustively researched and painstakingly brought to life, H. H. Holmes will be an invaluable companion to the upcoming Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio movie about Holmes’s murder spree based on Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City.

Book Twice the Thrills Twice the Chills

Download or read book Twice the Thrills Twice the Chills written by Bryan Senn and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1950s, to combat declining theater attendance, film distributors began releasing pre-packaged genre double-bills--including many horror and science fiction double features. Though many of these films were low-budget and low-end, others, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Horror of Dracula and The Fly, became bona fide classics. Beginning with Universal-International's 1955 pairing of Revenge of the Creature and Cult of the Cobra, 147 officially sanctioned horror and sci-fi double-bills were released over a 20-year period. This book presents these double features year-by-year, and includes production details, historical notes, and critical commentary for each film.
