Book An Investigation of the Effectiveness of Stiffeners on Shear resistant Plate girder Webs

Download or read book An Investigation of the Effectiveness of Stiffeners on Shear resistant Plate girder Webs written by R. L. Moore and published by . This book was released on 1942 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of 60 different tests on 2 aluminum alloy 17S-T plate girders are presented to show the influence of size and spacing of stiffeners upon the buckling characteristics of shear-resistant webs within the elastic range. It is demonstrated that stiffeners increase the stability of a web by retarding the formation of buckles and by providing partial edge restraint to the subdivided panels. An empirical method of proportioning stiffeners is proposed which recognizes both of these stiffener functions, the comparisons are made with design procedures based upon theoretical considerations of the buckling problem. Also, some experimental data are provided to show the effect of stiffener size and spacing upon ultimate web strengths.

Book Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures

Download or read book Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures written by Jeom Kee Paik and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-03-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel plated structures are important in a variety of marine and land-based applications, including ships, offshore platforms, power and chemical plants, box girder bridges and box girder cranes. The basic strength members in steel plated structures include support members (such as stiffeners and plate girders), plates, stiffened panels/grillages and box girders. During their lifetime, the structures constructed using these members are subjected to various types of loading which is for the most part operational, but may in some cases be extreme or even accidental. Ultimate Limit State Design of Steel Plated Structures reviews and describes both fundamentals and practical design procedures in this field. The derivation of the basic mathematical expressions is presented together with a thorough discussion of the assumptions and the validity of the underlying expressions and solution methods. Particularly valuable coverage in the book includes: * Serviceability and the ultimate limit state design of steel structural systems and their components * The progressive collapse and the design of damage tolerant structures in the context of marine accidents * Age related structural degradation such as corrosion and fatigue cracks Furthermore, this book is also an easily accessed design tool which facilitates learning by applying the concepts of the limit states for practice using a set of computer programs which can be downloaded. In addition, expert guidance on mechanical model test results as well as nonlinear finite element solutions, sophisticated design methodologies useful for practitioners in industries or research institutions, selected methods for accurate and efficient analyses of nonlinear behavior of steel plated structures both up to and after the ultimate strength is reached, is provided. Designed as both a textbook and a handy reference, the book is well suited to teachers and university students who are approaching the limit state design technology of steel plated structures for the first time. The book also meets the needs of structural designers or researchers who are involved in civil, marine and mechanical engineering as well as offshore engineering and naval architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate Girder Stiffeners: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Illinois, Presented June, 1910 The object of the use of stiffeners on plate girders is not well understood by the majority of engineers. The stressesiin stif feners and the theoretical treatment of them is an indefinite pr0b= lem in itself, and can only be solved by experimental investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect or stiffeners on the strength of model built-up plate girders and to determine the stresses in the stiffeners of a plate girder in actual railroad use, The present theory and method of design is reviewed and a summary 0 the experimental work in this subject is stated The effect of the number of stiffeners and the length of the outstanding legs of stifl fenars on the strength of plate girders is clearly shown by means of curves. A discussion of the results of each experiment is recorded after each set of tests, and a general discussion of the results may be found in the conclusion. This book was released on 2009 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So far working stress method was used for the design of steel structures. Nowadays whole world is going for the limit state method which is more rational. Indian national code IS:800 for the design of steel structures was revised in the year 2007 incorporating limit state method. This book is aimed at training the students in using IS: 800 2007 for designing steel structures by limit state method. The author has explained the provisions of code in simple language and illustrated the design procedure with a large number of problems. It is hoped that all universities will soon adopt design of steel structures as per IS: 2007 and this book will serve as a good textbook.A sincere effort has been made to present design procedure using simple language, neat sketches and solved problems.
