Book Plant protection outlook in the Asia Pacific region

Download or read book Plant protection outlook in the Asia Pacific region written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world’s greatest challenges is to feed a growing human population in an effective, sustainable and environmentally conscious manner. In the Asia-Pacific, agri-food production is greatly impeded by a speciose complex of transboundary pests and pathogens (TPP). Integrated pest management (IPM), a sequential decision-making process founded upon agro-ecological principles and aimed at reducing pest-induced losses with minimal (if any) reliance upon chemical toxins, is tailor-made to resolve the impact of TPP. This technical paper draws upon the results of online surveys and systematically maps the lay-out and inclusiveness of national plant protection programmes. It examines whether IPM is being used optimally used to tackle recent invasions of the fall armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda). By juxtaposing countries’ FAW programme priorities with their in-house capabilities, this technical paper puts forward several tactical interventions to fill capacity gaps, mobilize technical expertise, redraw IPM legislation and spotlight earlystage biological control successes. As such, this work provides invaluable guidance to future efforts to upscale naturefriendly technologies across the Asia-Pacific. No doubt, the net positive monetary, environmental and societal dividends of such approaches will yield enormous returns on future investments.

This book was released on 2023-01-27 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing concerns about the impact of pesticide use on biodiversity and human health, and increasing demand for products from biodiversity-friendly production systems, including organic systems, have led to increasing interest in alternative methods of pest control, including the use of biological control agents. This paper presents an overview of the current status of BCAs and biostimulants (focusing only on micro-organisms and invertebrates) and their management, needs and challenge in termsof improving their management and potential opportunities for the Commission and its Members to contribute to efforts to address these needs and challenges. The scope covers all the sectors of agriculture as defined by FAO, i.e. crop and livestock production, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture.

Book Global Environment Outlook 2000

Download or read book Global Environment Outlook 2000 written by United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The continued poverty of the majority of the planet's inhabitants and excessive consumption by the minority are the two major causes of environmental degradation The present course is unsustainable and postponing action is no longer an option. Inspired political leadership and intense cooperation across all regions and sectors will be needed to put both existing and new policy instruments to work. ' From the Synthesis Global Environment Outlook 2000 (GEO-2000) is a comprehensive and authoritative review and analysis of environmental conditions around the world. It is the flagship publication of the world's leading environmental organization, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and is based on information provided by more than 30 regional and international collaborating centres. The book presents a region-by-region analysis of the state of the world's environment, highlighting key global concerns and making recommendations for policy action. The regions covered include Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia and the Polar Areas. Chapter 1: Global Perspectives describes the main drivers of environmental change, such as the economy, population growth, political organization and regionalization, as well as potential impacts of recent global developments including the growth of the consumer culture, trade and international debt. Chapter 2: The State of the Environment provides a global and region-by-region overview of the environment at the end of the second millennium. The chapter covers global issues such as ozone, climate change, El Nifio and nitrogen loading, and universal issues of land and food, forests, biodiversity, freshwater, marine and coastal areas, atmosphere and urban areas. Chapter 3: Policy Responses reviews the broad range of policy instruments and responses being used to address environmental issues, including multilateral environmental agreements, and analyses the difficulties of compliance, implementation and assessment. Chapter 4: Future Perspectives looks at environmental issues that will require priority attention in the 21st century and some alternative policy options that could be used in the regions. Chapter 5: Outlook and Recommendations makes recommendations for future action based on the environmental legacy left by past and present policy and management systems. GEO-2000 will be the benchmark reference and guide to the state of the global environment. Written in clear, non-technical language and supported throughout by informative graphics and tables, it is essential reading for all those involved in environmental policy making, implementation and assessment, and for researchers and students of regional and global environmental issues. Book Technical guidance on fall armyworm

Download or read book Technical guidance on fall armyworm written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, maize is the third most important cereal after rice and wheat. It occupies 197 million hectares of planted area. Asia contributes to nearly 30 percent of global maize supplies, and area and production of the crop is rapidly increasing in the continent. Minimum support prices, swelling market demand from the animal feed and processing industries, as well as human consumption, have all led to increased maize production in zones where precipitation limits rice cultivation. However, maize production is currently threatened by the arrival in Asia (in 2018) of the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) – a native to North America. It invaded India in 2018 and since then it has marched to most of the Asian countries. In 2019, its presence was confirmed in 13 Asian countries including Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam. In 2020, it was confirmed in Australia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea. In August 2021, it reached the Solomon Islands, posing a serious threat to other Pacific islands. FAW is a fast-dispersing, migratory, transboundary insect pest. While high FAW incidences have been reported on several crops in Asia, the most important economic damage caused is to maize (followed by sorghum). The FAW invasion threatens the food security of millions of family farms in Asia, with smallholder farmers being especially vulnerable. The negative economic impact of FAW is not only evident in yield loss: the pest also leads to a significant increase in insecticide applications, with associated health, environmental and cost issues. At the same time, resilience to FAW on the continent is currently weakened by the limited access to necessary tools, technologies and sustainable integrated pest management (IPM) practices for FAW. Thus, there is an urgent need to implement an effective approach to FAW management in Asia.
