Book Development on Loan

Download or read book Development on Loan written by Nicholas Loubere and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key to China's plans to promote rural development is the de-marginalisation of the countryside through the incorporation of rural areas into the urban-based market-oriented financial system. For this reason, Chinese development planners have turned to microcredit-i.e. the provision of small-scale loans to 'financially excluded' rural households-as a means of increasing 'financial consciousness' and facilitating rural de-marginalisation. Drawing on years of in-depth fieldwork in rural China, this book examines the formulation, implementation and outcomes of government-run microcredit programmes in China-illuminating the diverse roles that microcredit plays in local processes of socioeconomic development and the livelihoods of local actors. It details how microcredit facilitates de-marginalisation for some, while simultaneously exacerbating the marginalisation of others; and exposes the ways in which microcredit and other top-down development strategies reflect and reinforce the contradictions and paradoxes implicit in rural China's contemporary development landscape.

Book Micro Finance and Rural Development

Download or read book Micro Finance and Rural Development written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro finance is not simply banking but it is a development tool. It acts as a catalyst in the lives of poor. It has been recognized world over as one of the new development paradigms for alleviating poverty through social and economic empowerment of the poor, particularly women. There is a large gap in the demand and supply of the credit to poor in developing countries. Experiences of different anti-poverty and welfare programmes worldwide have also shown that the key to success lies in the evolution of community-based organization at the grassroot levels. Several studies made by national and international experts on micro finance have found the self-help groups (SHGs) profitable, viable and as a successful tool of social empowerment. Linking of formal credit institutions to borrowers through group approach have been recognized as a supplementary mechanism for providing credit to the rural poor. -- Publisher.

Book Fighting Poverty with Microcredit Experience in Bangladesh

Download or read book Fighting Poverty with Microcredit Experience in Bangladesh written by Shahidur R. Khandker and published by World Bank Group. This book was released on 1999-06-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing the poor with access to financial services is one of many ways to help increase their incomes and productivity. In many countries, however, traditional financial institutions have failed to provide this service. Microcredit and co-operative programmes have been developed to fill this gap. Their purpose is to help the poor become self-employed and thus escape poverty. Many of these programmes provide credit using social mechanisms, such as group-based lending, to reach the poor and other clients, including women, who lack access to formal financial institutions. With increasing assistance from the World Bank and other donors, microfinance is emerging as an instrument for reducing poverty and improving the poor's access to financial services in low-income countries. This text examines the experiences of the Grameen Bank and two other major microcredit programmes in Bangladesh in order to quantify the potential and limitations of microcredit programmes as an instrument for reducing poverty and delivering financial services to the poor.
