Thanks Lafayette for the kind treatment given to his brother William. Discusses the affair of Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant, who had been sent to France in 1783 to purchase jeweled eagle badges for the members of the Society of the Cincinnati. L'Enfant returned to America in 1784 and brought back many badges purchased on credit. The price proved too high for some officers, which left L'Enfant in a bind. Goes on to say that the Society approved of L'Enfant's conduct and owed 630 dollars to him for his services in France, which Knox says was recently offered to him. L'Enfant refused the payment until the entire issue of the badges purchased on credit is cleared up with the Society. Says L'Enfant will write to Lafayette. Reports he will keep Washington informed. Written on lined paper with an embossed image of a building on the upper left corner.

Major L'Enfant was sent to France to present Eagles to the French members of the society, at the society's expense. Was granted a sum of money for the purpose, but in his zeal to serve the society, he had more than 100 extra Eagles cast by the artist there, Mr. Francastle (goldsmith Nicolas-Jean Francastel). When he returned to America, he found that the society could not reimburse the extra expense, and the Eagles were not selling. The debt could ruin the Major, and Knox is concerned for him, as well as for the reputation of the society. Has discussed it with the Major and he would like to wait till the next society meeting, which will be in May 1787, and hopes that an inquiry will find that he was acting appropriately and help him with the debt. Would like Washington's opinion on the subject. Knox's retained draft.

The Society also felt that the general credit of our country does not stand well in Europe, so they wanted to ensure that the credit of their foreign members remained in good stead. Provides details of their reimbursement of L'Enfant, including their interactions with a Captain William Thompson, who may have sold some of L'Enfant's Eagles on credit. The society has decided that regardless of the actions of Captain Thompson, the buyers are still responsible for paying the sum they owe to Major L'Enfant. Says New York and Virginia want a new convention before the new government meets, but that the majority do not want this to happen. Mentions that Our friend Genl Washington is looked up to as the only man for President - and it is said Mr. John Adams will probably be vice president. Hopes he can report on a government happily in operation without any commotion in his next letter. Reports that Catherine Greene has gone to Georgia. States he was on a several month visit to his proposed estate in Maine.
