Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As aging trends in the United States and Europe in particular are strongly suggestive of increasingly older society, it would be prudent for health care providers to better prepare for such changes. By including physiology, disease, nutrition, pharmacology, pathology, radiology and other relevant associated topics, Geriatric Gastroenterology fills the void in the literature for a volume devoted specifically to gastrointestinal illness in the elderly. This unique volume includes provision of training for current and future generations of physicians to deal with the health problems of older adults. It will also serve as a comprehensive guide to practicing physicians for ease of reference. Relevant to the geriatric age group, the volume covers epidemiology, physiology of aging, gastrointestinal physiology, pharmacology, radiology, pathology, motility disorders, luminal disorders, hepato-biliary disease, systemic manifestations, neoplastic disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, cancer and medication related interactions and adverse events, all extremely common in older adults; these are often hard to evaluate and judge, especially considering the complex aging physiology. All have become important components of modern medicine. Special emphasis is be given to nutrition and related disorders. Capsule endoscopy and its utility in the geriatric population is also covered. Presented in simple, easy to read style, the volume includes numerous tables, figures and key points enabling ease of understanding. Chapters on imaging and pathology are profusely illustrated. All chapters are written by specialists and include up to date scientific information. Geriatric Gastroenterology is of great utility to residents in internal medicine, fellows in gastroenterology and geriatric medicine as well as gastroenterologists, geriatricians and practicing physicians including primary care physicians caring for older adults.

Book Evolutionary Gerontology and Geriatrics

Download or read book Evolutionary Gerontology and Geriatrics written by Giacinto Libertini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides concrete scientific basis that we can conceive the possibility of modifying or even completely canceling aging process, despite the fact that aging is commonly regarded as the result of the overall effects of many uncontrollable degenerative phenomena. The authors illustrate in detail the mechanisms by which cells and the whole organism age. Actions by which it is possible, or will be possible within a limited time, to operate for modifying aging are also debated. The discussion is conducted within the frame and the concepts of evolutionary medicine, which is also indispensable for distinguishing between the manifestations of aging and: (i) diseases that worsen with age, and (ii) acceleration of normal aging rates, caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits and other avoidable factors. The book also discusses the impact of aging on overall mortality and the strange situation that, according to official statistics, aging does not exist as cause of death. This book is a turning point between a gerontology and geriatrics conceived as the study and vain treatment of an incurable condition and one in which these disciplines examine the how and why of a physiological phenomenon that can be modified up to a possible total control. This means transforming the medical prevention and treatment of physiological aging from the greatest failure to the greatest success of medicine.

Book Aging and Age Related Disorders

Download or read book Aging and Age Related Disorders written by Stephen Bondy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Features that characterize the aging process include the gradual accumulation of cell damage after prolonged exposure to oxidative and inflammatory events over a lifetime. In addition to the accretion of lesions, the intrinsic levels of pro-oxidant and aberrant immune responses are elevated with age. These adverse events are often further enhanced by the chronic and slow progressing diseases that characterize the senescent brain and cardiovascular system. The incidence of some disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and vascular diseases are sufficiently prevalent in the extreme elderly that these disorders can arguably be considered "normal". Aging and Aging-Related Disorders examines the interface between normal and pathological aging, and illustrates how this border can sometimes be diffuse. It explores and illustrates the processes underlying the means by which aging becomes increasingly associated with inappropriate levels of free radical activity and how this can serve as a platform for the progression of age-related diseases. The book provides chapters that examine the interactive relationship between systems in the body that can enhance or sometimes even limit cellular longevity. In addition, specific redox mechanisms in cells are discussed. Another important aspect for aging discussed here is the close relationship between the systems of the body and exposure to environmental influences of oxidative stress that can affect both cellular senescence and a cell’s nuclear DNA. What may be even more interesting to note is that these external stressors are not simply confined to illnesses usually associated with aging, but can be evident in maturing and young individuals. A broad range of internationally recognized experts have contributed to this book. Their aim is to successfully highlight emerging knowledge and therapy for the understanding of the basis and development of aging–related disorders.

Download or read book Clinical Gerontology written by Oliver Fincher and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific study of the phenomena of aging is known as gerontology. It traces the progressive changes that take place in a cell, a tissue, an organ system and a total organism, with the passage of time. However, gerontology has a major focus on the changes that occur between the accomplishment of maturity and the death of the individual and the factors influencing these changes. Social and economic, psychological aspects of aging, physiological basis of aging and general biological aspects of aging in all animal species are the four major categories where the problems of gerontology fall. Gerontology aims to learn about the aging process for the purpose of minimizing the disabilities and handicaps of old age rather than the purpose of extending the life span. The book studies, analyzes and upholds the pillars of gerontology and its utmost significance in modern times. It is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide an in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of gerontology. This book is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.

Book excerpt: Continuing in the tradition of the first edition, Whitbourne's identity process model serves to integrate the physiological with a psychological perspective. The effects of physical changes on the individual are examined in terms of identity, as well as the impact of identity on the interpretation of these changes. The preventive and compensatory steps that indiviuduals can take to offset the aging process are explored as well. As with the first edition, a major strength of this text is the author's illumination of complex biological concepts in a clear and accessible style. The Second Edition includes new material focusing on demographic statistics, chronic diseases, the biopsychosocial perspective, and succesful aging. This edition also features new charts, tables, and figures to highlight the text. This is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of psychology, gerontology, and social work.

Book Challenges of Biological Aging

Download or read book Challenges of Biological Aging written by Edward J. Masoro and published by . This book was released on 1999-07-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the non-biologist an overview of what is known about the physiological bases of aging. The author examines the many basic theories and emerging hypotheses underlying the molecular, cellular, and systemic processes involved in senescence. He addresses the normal physiological changes that characterize the aging phenotype, and also considers the role of many age-associated diseases in growing older. Masoro synthesizes a much-needed "unified theory" of biological aging to which explains how and why the body grows into the condition we call "old." This text is intended for gerontology students in training, as well as for human physiologists interested in gerontology. OLD COPY: What is the biological basis of aging?? Why does aging occur? This volume will provide the reader with an overview of what we know about the biology of aging. In a clearly written and accessible style, the author examines the many theories and hypotheses underlying the molecular, cellular, and systemic processes involved in growing older. Also considered are the many age-associated diseases and physiological changes that characterize aging, as well as interventions -- from lifestyle modifications to pharmacological treatments -- proposed to reverse age-related changes. He then synthesizes a much needed unifying concept of the biological basis of aging to help us understand why we grow old. This book is intended for students training to become gerontologists as well as biologists not conversant in the aging field.
