Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site, in Washington State is organized into numerically designated operational areas including the 100, 200, 300, 400, 600, and 1100 Areas. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in November 1989 included the 200 Areas of the Hanford Site on the National Priority List (NPL) under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA). Inclusion on the NPL initiated the remedial investigation (RD process for the 200-BP-1 operable unit. These efforts are being addressed through the Hanford Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (Ecology et al. 1989) which was negotiated and approved by the DOE, the EPA, and the State of Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) in May 1989. This agreement, known as the Tri-Party Agreement, governs all CERCLA efforts at Hanford. In March of 1990, the Department of Energy, Richland Operations (DOE-RL) issued a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) work plan (DOE-RL 1990a) for the 200-BP-1 operable unit. The work plan initiated the first phase of site characterization activities associated with the 200-BP-1 operable unit. The purpose of the 200-BP-1 operable unit RI is to gather and develop the necessary information to adequately understand the risks to human health and the environment posed by the site and to support the development and analysis of remedial alternatives during the FS. The RI analysis will, in turn, be used by Tri-Party Agreement signatories to make a risk-management-based selection of remedies for the releases of hazardous substances that have occurred from the 200-BP-1 operable unit.

Book Phase I Remedial Investigation Report for the 300 FF 5 Operable Unit Volume 1

Download or read book Phase I Remedial Investigation Report for the 300 FF 5 Operable Unit Volume 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this remedial investigation (RI) is the 300-FF-5 operable unit, one of five operable units associated with the 300 Area aggregate of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Hanford Site. The 300-FF-5 operable unit is a groundwater operable unit beneath the 300-FF-1, 300-FF-2, and 300-FF-3 source operable units. This operable unit was designated to include all contamination detected in the groundwater and sediments below the water table that emanates from the 300-FF-1, 300-FF-2, and 300-FF-3 operable units (DOE-RL 1990a). In November 1989, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed the 300 Area on the National Priorities List (NPL) contained within Appendix B of the National Oil and Hazardous Substance Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP, 53 FR 51391 et seq.). The EPA took this action pursuant to their authority under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA, 42 USC 9601 et seq.). The DOE Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL), the EPA and Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) issued the Hanford Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (Tri-Party Agreement), in May 1989 (Ecology et al. 1992, Rev. 2). This agreement, among other matters, governs all CERCLA efforts at the Hanford Site. In June 1990, a remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) workplan for the 300-FF-5 operable unit was issued pursuant to the Tri-Party Agreement.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase 2 of a remedial investigation (RI) has been conducted at the U.S. Army Materials Technology Laboratory (MTL) in Watertown, Massachusetts. The U.S. Army Environmental Center, New England Division, contracted with Roy F. Weston, Inc. (WESTON) under the Base Closure Program Contract Number DAA15-9O-D-0009, Task Order 1, to complete, among other tasks, the Phase 2 RI at MTL. After the Phase 1 RI was initiated, MTL was recommended for closure by the Defense Secretary's Commission on Base Realignment and Closures. The original objectives of the Phase 1 RI did not include assessing concerns associated with future unlimited use of the site by the public after the closure of MTL. To do so, sampling in buildings, as well as more extensive environmental sampling and risk assessment, was required. This additional information was collected during the Phase 2 RI to properly evaluate potential remedial measures that would allow subsequent land use consistent with assigned reuse.

This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phase 1 (PH1) Remedial Investigation (RI) report was prepared for the 36 study sites of the Load-Assemble-Package (LAP) area of Joliety Army Ammunition Plant (JAAP), Joliet, Illinois. The report was prepared in accordance with the Interagency Agreement (IAG) between the U.S. Army Environmental Center (USAEC; formerly USATHAMA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region V, and Illinois EPA. The report describes the site history, physical and environmental conditions, and the nature and the extent of contamination detected. Data from previous investigations, along with data gathered during the implementation of the PH1 RI Technical Plan are presented. The purpose of this report is to identify if contamination is present at the study areas, and if so, define the nature and extent, provide data to perform a baseline risk assessment, provide data for assessment of remedial alternatives in a feasibility study (FS), and recommend any Phase 2 RI activities that may be necessary.

Book Phase 1 Data Summary Report for the Clinch River Remedial Investigation

Download or read book Phase 1 Data Summary Report for the Clinch River Remedial Investigation written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clinch River Remedial Investigation (CRRI) is designed to address The transport, fate, and distribution of waterborne contaminants from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) and to assess potential risks to human health and the environment associated with these contaminants. The contaminants released since the early 1940s include a variety of radionuclides, metals, and organic compounds. Primary areas of investigation are Melton Hill Reservoir, the Clinch River from Melton Hill Dam to its confluence with the Tennessee River, Poplar Creek, and Watts Bar Reservoir. The receiving river-reservoir system encompasses 140 river miles in length and 44,000 acres in surface area and is used for municipal water supply, sport fishing, navigation, boating, swimming, tourism, and residential development. The contaminants identified in the Clinch River/Watts Bar Reservoir (CR/WBR) downstream of the ORR are those associated with the water, suspended particles, deposited sediments, aquatic organisms, and wildlife feeding on aquatic organisms. A phased remedial investigation of the CR/WBR system is underway to (1) define the nature and extent of the off-site contamination, (2) evaluate associated environmental and human health risks, and (3) preliminarily identify and evaluate potential remediation alternatives. The purpose of this report is to summarize the results of Phase 1 of the CRRI.
