Download or read book Whispers from the Woods Embracing the Art of Shinrin Yoku written by Joe Bailey and published by Joe Bailey. This book was released on 2023-08-26 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whispers from the Woods: Embracing the Ancient Art of Shinrin-Yoku In the heart of Japan’s verdant forests, a secret beckons—the gentle invitation of nature herself, a call to ‘forest bathe’ in her embrace. This is shinrin-yoku, a serenade to the soul, the dance of dappled sunlight and the rustling of ancient leaves. Have you ever felt the world’s weight on your shoulders? Have you ever felt crushed and constrained by urban chaos and the technological chains that bind our modern souls? Discover the age-old Japanese art of forest bathing, a practice that mingles the Zen stillness of meditation with the organic symphony of the woods. From early Shogun warriors seeking solace to today’s frenzied souls, shinrin-yoku rejuvenates, calms, and reconnects us to the world. Why surrender to the woods? Beyond the poetic whispers of the wind and the gentle songs of the streams, forest bathing is a bridge to inner peace, a bolster to health, and a balm to the weary heart. The trees have stories, and in their shade, we rediscover stories of our own. Whispers from the Woods is your guide to the ‘how’, the ‘where’, and the ‘why’ of this sacred practice. Wander through its pages to find ideal locales for your shinrin-yoku retreat, tips on truly immersing yourself, and insights into the Zen meditation aspects that amplify the experience of forest bathing. Whether you’re nestled in the dense foliage of the Kyoto mountains or seeking sanctuary in a suburban park, the essence of forest bathing remains. So take off your shoes and let the earth massage your feet, the air cleanse your thoughts, and the forest spirits playfully soothe your heartstrings. Dive deep, breathe in, and let the whispers of the woods guide you home.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A life-altering journey through the science of neuroaesthetics, which offers proof for how our brains and bodies transform when we participate in the arts—and how this knowledge can improve our health, enable us to flourish, and build stronger communities. “This book blew my mind!”—Angela Duckworth, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Grit Many of us think of the arts as entertainment—a luxury of some kind. In Your Brain on Art, authors Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross show how activities from painting and dancing to expressive writing, architecture, and more are essential to our lives. We’re on the verge of a cultural shift in which the arts can deliver potent, accessible, and proven solutions for the well-being of everyone. Magsamen and Ross offer compelling research that shows how engaging in an art project for as little as forty-five minutes reduces the stress hormone cortisol, no matter your skill level, and just one art experience per month can extend your life by ten years. They expand our understanding of how playing music builds cognitive skills and enhances learning; the vibrations of a tuning fork create sound waves to counteract stress; virtual reality can provide cutting-edge therapeutic benefit; and interactive exhibits dissolve the boundaries between art and viewers, engaging all of our senses and strengthening memory. Doctors have even been prescribing museum visits to address loneliness, dementia, and many other physical and mental health concerns. Your Brain on Art is a portal into this new understanding about how the arts and aesthetics can help us transform traditional medicine, build healthier communities, and mend an aching planet. Featuring conversations with artists such as David Byrne, Renée Fleming, and evolutionary biologist E. O. Wilson, Your Brain On Art is an authoritative guide to neuroaesthetics. The book weaves a tapestry of breakthrough research, insights from multidisciplinary pioneers, and compelling stories from people who are using the arts to enhance their lives.

Book excerpt: Note: This eBook file contains many richly detailed full-color images and makes use of unconventional page layouts. Because of this, readers will be required to zoom in on each page to read the text and see the finer detail of the artwork. [It has not been optimized for devices that display only in black and white.] From the National Book Award finalist Lauren Redniss, author of Radioactive, comes a dazzling fusion of storytelling, visual art, and reportage that grapples with weather in all its dimensions: its danger and its beauty, why it happens and what it means. WINNER OF THE PEN/E. O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, KIRKUS REVIEWS, AND SHELF AWARENESS Weather is the very air we breathe—it shapes our daily lives and alters the course of history. In Thunder & Lightning, Lauren Redniss tells the story of weather and humankind through the ages. This wide-ranging work roams from the driest desert on earth to a frigid island in the Arctic, from the Biblical flood to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Redniss visits the headquarters of the National Weather Service, recounts top-secret rainmaking operations during the Vietnam War, and examines the economic impact of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on extensive research and countless interviews, she examines our own day and age, from our most personal decisions—Do I need an umbrella today?—to the awesome challenges we face with global climate change. Redniss produced each element of Thunder & Lightning: the text, the artwork, the covers, and every page in between. She created many of the images using the antiquated printmaking technique copper plate photogravure etching. She even designed the book’s typeface. The result is a book unlike any other: a spellbinding combination of storytelling, art, and science. Praise for Thunder & Lightning “[An] aesthetically charged and deeply researched account . . . a wild rainstorm of a book, pelting the reader with ideas and inspiration.”—Nature “A gorgeous and illuminating illustrated study of weather in all its tempestuous variety . . . Redniss’s combo of fact, folklore, and vibrant etched copperplate prints enthralls.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Eerily beautiful . . . Contains plenty of scientific explanation (including more than a few nods toward global warming), but also far-flung personal stories that illuminate the beauty, wonder and chaos inherent in the elements.”—The New York Times “Magical . . . Redniss has . . . shown us how human beings live with nature—fighting, coexisting, taming, predicting via leech barometer and radar and intuition.”—The New York Times Book Review “[A] twenty-first-century genius . . . The reader willing to put herself fully in Redniss’s hands will be rewarded with a delicious feeling of being enveloped by a phenomenon that eclipses the chiming trivialities of daily life.”—Elle “Redniss is one of the most creative science writers of our time—her combination of beautiful artwork, reporting, and poetic prose brings science to life in ways that words alone simply cannot.”—Rebecca Skloot “Redniss combines her own dual punch of expressive art and impressive erudition to give an entirely new take on all that happens above our heads.”—Adam Gopnik “A strange and wonderful thing, the work of a first-class mind that refuses to submit to any categories or precedent.”—Dave Eggers

Book Art Scents

  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 0190089814
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book Art Scents written by Larry E. Shiner and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An overview of the aesthetic and ethical issues raised by the contemporary olfactory arts, which range from gallery and museum sculptures and installations, through the enhancement of theatre, film and music with scents, to the ambient scenting of stores and avant-garde chefs' use of scents in cuisine. Special attention is given to the aesthetics of perfume and incense and the question of their art status, as well as to the role of scent in the appreciation of nature and gardens. Ethical issues are discussed regarding ambient scenting, perfume wearing, and the use of smells in fast-food marketing. Because of the traditional neglect and denigration of the sense of smell and its aesthetic potential by philosophers from Kant and Hegel to the present, and by Darwin's and Freud's view of the human sense of smell as a near useless evolutionary vestige, the first parts of the book counter that tradition with both philosophical arguments and evidence from current evolutionary theory, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, history, linguistics and literature. Although the focus is on Western olfactory arts, the book draws on non-Western examples throughout. The book is aimed at both philosophers and general readers interested in the arts, and develops positions that should stimulate further discussion"--

Beginning with lessons on the incredible biology and history of how our noses work, Stewart teaches us how to use our noses like experts. Book excerpt: How do we describe a place? In this book, author and poet Annamaria Weldon offers an intimate portrait of the chain of lakes on Australia's southwest coast that includes Lake Yalgorup, between Mandurah and Bunbury. The Lake's Apprentice contains a suite of poems, celebrated essays, photographs, and nature notes cognizant of current environmental research. This elegant testimony collapses time, evoking the long past of Bindjareb Noongar land use and thinking through to a resilient future. [Annamaria Weldon is a widely published poet and essayist. She has won the Tom Collins Poetry Prize in 2010, as well as the inaugural Nature Conservancy Australia's Prize for Nature Writing in 2011, and she was shortlisted for the Peter Porter Poetry Prize in 2012.] *** "This kind of writing - the fruit of real contemplation, informed by a wide range of ideas, respectful of the reader's intellect and imagination, driven by an empirical sensibility - is, for me, where the best 'nature writing' is to be found." -- Barry Lopez, winner of the US National Book Award for Nonfiction for Arctic Dreams, and National Book Award finalist for Of Wolves and Men. *** "This is an act of pilgrimage in writing: Annamaria Weldon seeks, and finds; she advances with tact and attention, she gives her readers the gift of seeing landscape with new eyes." -- Nicolas Rothwell

Book Scented Visions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christina Bradstreet
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2022-06-29
  • ISBN : 0271092572
  • Pages : 411 pages

Download or read book Scented Visions written by Christina Bradstreet and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2022-06-29 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smell loomed large in cultural discourse in the late nineteenth century, thanks to the midcentury fear of miasma, the drive for sanitation reform, and the rise in artificial perfumery. Meanwhile, the science of olfaction remained largely mysterious, prompting an impulse to “see smell” and inspiring some artists to picture scent in order to better know and control it. This book recovers the substantive role of the olfactory in Pre-Raphaelite art and Aestheticism. Christina Bradstreet examines the iconography and symbolism of scent in nineteenth-century art and visual culture. Fragrant imagery in the work of John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Simeon Solomon, George Frederic Watts, Edward Burne-Jones, and others set the trend for the preoccupation with scent that informed swaths of British, European, and American art and design. Bradstreet’s rich analyses of paintings, perfume posters, and other works of visual culture demonstrate how artworks mirrored the “period nose” and intersected with the most clamorous debates of the day, including evolution, civilization, race, urban morality, mental health, faith, and the “woman question.” Beautifully illustrated and grounded in current practices in sensory history, Scented Visions presents both fresh readings of major works of art and a deeper understanding of the cultural history of nineteenth-century scent.
