Book Basque Nationalism and the Spanish State

Download or read book Basque Nationalism and the Spanish State written by André Lecours and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2007-07-13 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of Basque nationalism from a historical perspective. Basque nationalism has been extensively examined from the perspectives of Basque culture and internal conditions in the Basque Country, but André Lecours is among the first to demonstrate how Basque nationalism was shaped by the many forms and historical phases of the Spanish state. His discussion employs one of the most debated approaches in the social sciences—historical institutionalism—and it includes an up-to-date examination of the circumstances for, and consequences of, recent events such as ETA's announcement in 2006 of a permanent cease-fire. Lecours also analyzes other aspects of Basque nationalism, including the international relations of the Basque Autonomous Government, as well as the responses of the contemporary Spanish state and how it deploys its own brand of nationalism. Finally, the book offers a comparative discussion of Basque, Catalan, Scottish, Flemish, and Quebecois nationalist movements, suggesting that nationalism in the Basque Country, despite the historical presence of violence, is in many ways similar to nationalism in other industrialized democracies. Basque Nationalism and the Spanish State is an original and provocative discussion that is essential reading for anyone interested in the Basques or in the development of modern nationalist movements.

Book Biblical Interpretation Beyond Historicity

Download or read book Biblical Interpretation Beyond Historicity written by Ingrid Hjelm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical Interpretation beyond Historicity evaluates the new perspectives that have emerged since the crisis over historicity in the 1970s and 80s in the field of biblical scholarship. Several new studies in the field, as well as the ‘deconstructive’ side of literary criticism that emerged from writers such as Derrida and Wittgenstein, among others, lead biblical scholars today to view the texts of the Bible more as literary narratives than as sources for a history of Israel. Increased interest in archaeological and anthropological studies in writing the history of Palestine and the ancient Near East leads to the need for an evidence-based history of Palestine. This volume analyses the consequences of the question: "If the Bible is not history, what is it then?" The editors, Hjelm and Thompson are members of the Copenhagen School, which was formed in the light of this question and the commitment to a new approach to both the history of Palestine and the Bible’s place in ancient history. This volume features essays from a range of highly regarded scholars, and is divided into three sections: "Beyond Historicity", which explores alternative historical roles for the Bible, "Greek Connections", which discusses the Bible’s context in the Hellenistic world and "Reception", which explores extra-biblical functions of biblical studies. Offering a unique gathering of scholars and challenging new theories, Biblical Interpretation beyond Historicity is invaluable to students in the field of Biblical and East Mediterranean Studies, and is a crucial resource for anyone working on both the archaeology and history of Palestine and the ancient Near East, and the religious development of Europe and the Near East.

Book Follow the Whale

Download or read book Follow the Whale written by Ivan T. Sanderson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time immemorial man has pursued the whale. Follow the Whale, which was first published in 1956, tells the story of the people who have engaged in that pursuit—its historical, cultural and economic consequences. In narrative never less thrilling for sticking close to the known facts, biologist Ivan Sanderson has recreated the whole fabulous saga of whaling through the ages—not only from the beginning of recorded history but long before. “The story that follows is an attempt to display this fascinating facet of human endeavor in some semblance of its entirety and in proper perspective by a process of corralling the forgotten and more neglected aspects of whaling history and the new discoveries about the whales themselves, and weaving them into a continuous web of narrative. It is primarily natural history, in both senses of that term. It is the history of man’s conquest of the sea, a saga with a theme so inexorable that it can only be described as natural, and it is a natural history of a group of animals than which there are none more mysterious or romantic in the world. To follow the whale is to follow the whole course of one of the most important and significant aspects of our own history. It is virtually the story of the conquest of our planet.”

  • Author : Talitha Ilacqua
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press

  • ISBN : 152616924X
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book Inventing the modern region written by Talitha Ilacqua and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the process by which the French Basque country acquired a folkloric regional identity in the long nineteenth century. It argues that, despite its origins in pre-modern customs, this stereotypical identity was invented as part of France’s process of nation-building. The abolition of privileges in 1789 prompted a new interest in local culture as the defining feature of provincial France, shaping the transition from the pre-‘modern’ province to the ‘modern’ region. The relationship between the region and the nation, however, was difficult. Regional culture favoured the integration of the French Basque provinces into the French nation-state but also challenged the authority of the central state. As a result, Basque region-building reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the unitary model of French nationhood, in the nineteenth century as well as today.

Book Minority Theatre on the Global Stage

Download or read book Minority Theatre on the Global Stage written by Madelena Gonzalez and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, in the most varied contexts, contemporary theatre is a rich source for increasing the visibility of communities generally perceived by others as minorities, or those who see themselves as such. Whether of a linguistic, ethnic, political, social, cultural or sexual nature, the claims of minorities enjoy a privileged medium in theatre. Perhaps it is because theatre itself is linked to the notions of centre and periphery, conformism and marginality, domination and subjugation – notions that minority theatre constantly examines by staging them – that it is so sensitive to the issues of troubled and conflicted identity and able to give them a universal resonance. Among the questions raised by this volume, is that of the relationship between the particular and the more general aims of this type of theatre. How is it possible to speak to everyone, or at least to the majority, when one is representing the voice of the few? Beyond such considerations, urgent critical examination of the function and aims of minority theatre is needed. To what kind of public is such drama addressed? Does it have an exemplary nature? How is it possible to avoid the pitfalls and the dead end of ghettoization? Certain types of audience-specific theatre are examined in this context, as, for example, theatre as therapy, theatre as an educational tool, and gay theatre. Particular attention is paid to the claims of minorities within culturally and economically dominant western countries. These are some of the avenues explored by this volume which aims to answer fundamental questions such as: What is minority theatre and why does theatre, a supposedly bourgeois, if not to say elitist, art form, have such affinity with the margins? What if, particularly in contemporary society, the theatre as a form, were merely playing out its fundamentally marginal status? The authors of these essays show how different forms of minority theatre can challenge cultural consensus and homogenization, while also aspiring to universality. They also address the central question of the place and status of apparently marginal forms of theatre in the context of globalization and in doing so re-examine theatre itself as a genre. Not only do they illustrate how minority theatre can challenge the dominant paradigms that govern society, but they also suggest their own more flexible and challenging frameworks for theatrical activity.

Book Autonomies et ind pendances

Download or read book Autonomies et ind pendances written by and published by Editions Publibook. This book was released on 2016 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
