Book Pesticide Residue Distribution on Protective Clothing Fabrics as Determined by SEM Micrographs and Their Image Analyses

Download or read book Pesticide Residue Distribution on Protective Clothing Fabrics as Determined by SEM Micrographs and Their Image Analyses written by SM. Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workers using pesticide are required by federal law to wear personal protective equipment. Thus, understanding the interaction between pesticide and the surface of protective clothing fabrics is necessary to facilitate design of fabrics that meet federal regulations and are cost-effective and comfortable to wear. Six protective clothing fabrics, two woven and four nonwoven, were investigated to determine distribution patterns of pesticide residues on the fabrics. We developed procedures to measure and describe image characteristics of these protective clothing fabrics in their natural state and related those to images with pesticide contamination. Pesticide distribution patterns were different depending on the fabric structure and fiber content. Mainly, pesticide residues crystallized on fiber surfaces except for the 100% cotton woven fabric, in which pesticide was believed to be absorbed into the cotton fibers and thus less amounts of pesticide were shown on the surface. The 100% polyethylene fabric was sheet-like, so pesticide residues spread evenly on the fabric surface. Image analysis of fabric structure with or without pesticide contamination revealed that images darkened with the addition of pesticide; however, images with pesticide contamination darkened differently between the six protective clothing fabrics.

Book Test Method Development and Evaluation of Protective Clothing Items Used in Agricultural Pesticide Operations

Download or read book Test Method Development and Evaluation of Protective Clothing Items Used in Agricultural Pesticide Operations written by DJ. Ehntholt and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protective clothing is the principal defense of millions of farm workers and pesticide mixers/applicators against skin contamination by pesticides. Unfortunately, few data are available in the public domain to permit the identification of appropriate protective items for specific categories and types of pesticides and pesticide formulations. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has therefore sponsored an effort to produce, assemble, and critically evaluate data on the effectiveness of protective clothing for agricultural uses. This paper describes (1) efforts to develop a rapid screening method for determining the compatibility of various glove materials with selected pesticides and (2) comparative analyses of collection media for use with the ASTM Test Method for Resistance of Protective Clothing Materials to Permeation by Liquids and Gases (F 739-85) permeation cell in tests of low-volatility, low-water-solubility active ingredients in pesticide formulations.

Book Distribution of Malathion and Methyl Parathion on Cotton Polyester Unfinished and Durable Press Fabrics Before and After Laundering as Determined by Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Distribution of Malathion and Methyl Parathion on Cotton Polyester Unfinished and Durable Press Fabrics Before and After Laundering as Determined by Electron Microscopy written by SK. Obendorf and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distributions of the organophosphorus pesticides malathion and methyl parathion on 50% cotton/50% polyester fabric with and without a durable-press finish were studied by electron microscopy. Osmium tetroxide was used to tag the pesticides for the study of their distribution on the yarns and fibers by backscattered electron imaging and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Distributions of malathion and methyl parathion on the unlaundered specimens were similar, with high concentrations present on the surfaces of both polyester and cotton fibers and in the cotton lumen. No pesticide was observed inside the polyester fibers. Laundering removed 60 to 70% of each pesticide by cleaning the surfaces of the fibers but had little effect on the concentration of pesticide in the cotton lumen. Laundering removed more malathion than methyl parathion from the surfaces of the polyester fibers. The durable-press finish had no effect on the total amount retained or on the distribution of malathion after laundering, while slightly more methyl parathion was observed on the unfinished fabric.

Book Use of Fluorescent Tracers and Video Imaging to Evaluate Chemical Protective Clothing During Pesticide Applications

Download or read book Use of Fluorescent Tracers and Video Imaging to Evaluate Chemical Protective Clothing During Pesticide Applications written by RA. Fenske and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The addition of fluorescent tracers to agricultural spraying systems allows the direct evaluation of protective clothing under actual field conditions. Deposition of the tracer beneath clothing is quantified by means of a video imaging system. Workers are illuminated under long-wave ultraviolet light following exposure, and the fluorescence on the skin is measured. This exposure assessment technique was tested with 25 workers conducting mixing and high-volume airblast application procedures with the organophosphate pesticide malathion in citrus groves. Three types of protective clothing were compared: cotton/polyester workshirts, cotton/polyester coveralls, and nonwoven coveralls (untreated Tyvek). All workers had measurable hand exposure, despite the use of neoprene gloves. Hand exposure to mixers was more than twice that of applicators. Substantial deposition of tracer occurred beneath clothing. The applicator group wearing workshirts was more highly exposed than either of the coverall groups (Analysis of Variance, p

Book Impact of Computational Methods Used on Pesticide Residue Reported in Cotton Polyester and Cotton Polyester Blend Fabrics

Download or read book Impact of Computational Methods Used on Pesticide Residue Reported in Cotton Polyester and Cotton Polyester Blend Fabrics written by Y-J Lin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the impact computational methods have on the mass of pesticide reported remaining in the fabrics. Each fabric specimen (10 x 10 cm) was marked along 5 x 5 and 8 x 8 cm lines. Pesticide stained with methylene violet dye was applied to the center of the fabrics with and without a water and oil repellent finish. Excess pesticide was removed after 10 min. The contaminated area was traced and calculated by using a) planimeter and b) maximum length and width of contaminated area (Lmax x Wmax). Prior to extraction, all specimens were cut into three pieces along the five and eight cm lines and each piece extracted separately. The amount of pesticide remaining in the fabrics was calculated using three different methods: a) mass per area (?g/cm2), b) mass per volume (?g/mL), and c) residual mass. Calculations for the first method, mass per area, were based on five different measures: a) contaminated area calculated by using planimeter, b) contaminated area calculated by using Lmax x Wmax, c) specimen area using 5 x 5 cm, d) specimen area using 8 x 8 cm, and e) specimen area using 10 x 10 cm. Findings of the study indicate that in unfinished fabrics, the difference in the mass per area measured by planimeter was as much as 2.2 times greater than that measured in 10 x 10 cm specimens. For fabrics with a water and oil repellent finish, differences were even more dramatic: the mass of pesticide per area reported using the planimeter method was up to 55 times higher than that of 8 x 8 cm specimens and 103 times higher than that of 10 x 10 cm specimens. Selection of appropriate computational method is very important to ensure accurate results and conclusion.

Book Evaluation of Carbonaceous Adsorbent Coated Fabric as a Barrier to Pesticide Penetration for Dermal Exposure Reduction in Pesticide Application

Download or read book Evaluation of Carbonaceous Adsorbent Coated Fabric as a Barrier to Pesticide Penetration for Dermal Exposure Reduction in Pesticide Application written by EP. Easter and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to assess the barrier protection of carbonaceous adsorbent coated fabrics to pesticide penetration using three pesticides at three levels of exposure. The fabric helsasafe® was a three component, textile/adhesive/adsorber structure, employing Ambersorb® adsorbent, a patented synthetic adsorbent resulting from pyrolysis of macroreticular polymer beads. A pesticide spray chamber delivered a controlled amount of pesticide solution to the fabric samples. The analysis was completed by extracting the pesticide residue from the fabric with hexane. High performance liquid chromotography (HPLC) analysis enabled the detection of pesticides at the ppm level. The results showed that helsasafe® 503045 and 502666 provided complete barrier protection for one pass exposure levels for all three pesticides. These two fabrics also provided complete barrier protection for two and three pass exposures of the pesticide Chlorobenzilate®. In addition, the same two fabrics provided complete barrier protection in the majority of replications for the other two pesticides at two and three pass exposures. Also, all three helsasafe® fabrics provided better barrier protection to the pesticide Terrazole® than the six denim fabrics used for comparison.
