Book Asian Economic Integration in an Era of Global Uncertainty

Download or read book Asian Economic Integration in an Era of Global Uncertainty written by Shiro Armstrong and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Trade and Development (PAFTAD) conference series has been at the forefront of analysing challenges facing the economies of East Asia and the Pacific since its first meeting in Tokyo in January 1968. The 38th PAFTAD conference met at a key time to consider international economic integration. Earlier in the year, the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union and the United States elected Donald Trump as their next president on the back of an inward-looking ‘America First’ promise. Brexit and President Trump represent a growing, and worrying, trend towards protectionism in the North Atlantic countries that have led the process of globalisation since the end of the Second World War. The chapters in the volume describe the state of play in Asian economic integration but, more importantly, look forward to the region’s future, and the role it might play in defending the global system that has underwritten its historic rise. Asia has the potential to stand as a bulwark against the dual threats of North Atlantic protectionism and slowing trade growth, but collective leadership will be needed regionally and difficult domestic reforms will be required in each country.

Book New Directions in Asia Pacific Economic Integration

Download or read book New Directions in Asia Pacific Economic Integration written by Guoqiang Tang and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum celebrates its 25th anniversary in a vastly changed region and world. In Bogor, Indonesia, 20 years earlier, APEC committed to achieve free trade and investment in the region by 2020. In Beijing in 2014, China will again make regional economic integration an APEC priority. These papers draw on two conferences organized by the China National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation and are published jointly with the United States Asia Pacific Council. As one contributor put it, APEC earns an "A" for its vision of regional economic integration, but its grade on execution remains "incomplete." Yet pathways to the Bogor Goals are coming into focus. This book examines the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership negotiations from various perspectives, and considers possibilities for their consolidation into a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP). It also explores regional connectivity and the proposed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Experts from nearly every APEC economy explore the benefits and challenges of regional economic integration. Their perspectives differ, but also reveal striking common ground. They offer practical recommendations for the Asian and trans-Pacific pathways--for ensuring their compatibility, and for promoting their convergence into an FTAAP.

Book APEC Trade Agenda The Political Economy of a Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific

Download or read book APEC Trade Agenda The Political Economy of a Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific written by Charles E Morrison and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposal for an Asia-Pacific-wide free trade agreement is one of the oldest ideas for promoting mutually beneficial regional cooperation dating back to the mid-1960s. In more recent times, the idea has found new support for two main reasons: as a plan B to the stumbling Doha Development Agenda (DDA) round of WTO negotiations; and as a solution to the noodle bowl of bilateral agreements in the region. This report assesses the political feasibility of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) proposal and looks at alternative modalities for achieving free trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific. The report includes trade policy perspectives from the three largest economies of the region: the United States, China and Japan, lessons from similar proposals such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), possible convergence among the many preferential trade agreements (PTAs) in the region, and alternative approaches to regional economic integration.

Book Economic Integration in East Asia

Download or read book Economic Integration in East Asia written by Masahisa Fujita and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing numbers of free trade and economic partnership agreements have been concluded among many countries in East Asia, and economic integration has progressed rapidly on both a de facto and de jure basis. However, as the authors of this book argue, integration may intensify regional inequalities in East Asia and so this process has attracted much attention of late. Will it actually succeed in achieving greater economic growth or will it in fact cause growing regional disparity? This book presents a clear picture of East Asian integration, focusing on various aspects including: the structure of intra-regional trade industrial location patterns especially of multinational enterprises the formation of industrial agglomeration the development of political and institutional frameworks for integration. Economic Integration in East Asia addresses these issues from the perspectives of both spatial and neoclassical economics. As the book highlights, if the regional disparities continue to grow, this may constitute a fatal obstacle to deepening integration and the growth potential of East Asia. With its focus firmly on recommendations for the future, this book will be of great interest to academics and researchers of development, Asian studies and economic geography as well as development specialists in government and international organizations involved in East Asian integration.

Book Global Business Strategy Asian Perspective Second Edition

Download or read book Global Business Strategy Asian Perspective Second Edition written by Hwy-chang Moon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the second edition of Global Business Strategy, this book provides novel insights on how a firm can formulate a successful approach toward its global business from both the Western and Asian perspectives. In this respect, the book's overall goal is to bridge the gap between these two different viewpoints. This second edition includes more recent business theories, techniques, and cases within the field of global business strategy. Specifically, it includes new theories and techniques like creating shared value (CSV), the global value chain, platform strategy, and business ecosystem. They are shown to be important tools for enhancing competitiveness and maintaining sustainability among firms in today's rapidly changing international business environment. This is very much evident today given the critical challenges arising from the trade tensions between the United States and China, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation, and the unprecedented disruptions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. We hope that this book will serve as a useful companion for students, business practitioners, policymakers, and the more general readers interested in issues related to competitiveness and business.

The ASEAN Community, integrating the political, economic and social aspects of regional cooperation, will complete its first milestone by December 2015. Expectations of tangible benefits under an ASEAN Economic Community have attracted much attention though many of the initiatives will be realized post-2015.Following the policy of open regionalism, ASEAN has also signed free trade agreements with Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Japan and South Korea. It has launched negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement in 2013, with expected breakthrough by end-2015.The Southeast Asian economies are also involved in two other regional initiatives. First is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), initiated by the United States. As part of the U.S. "e;pivot to Asia"e;, the TPP is envisioned as a "e;comprehensive and high-quality"e; agreement and has concluded its negotiation in October 2015. Second, the discussions on regional connectivity have broadened; China has emerged as a recent lead proponent with its proposals for "e;One Belt, One Road"e; and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. All these together have implications not only for individual Southeast Asian countries but also for regional trading architecture. To aid in understanding the beginnings, development, and potential of these grand plans, this collection of 22 essays offers a rich analysis of ASEAN's own economic integration and other related initiatives proliferating in the broader Asia-Pacific region.

Book Economic Cooperation and Integration in Northeast Asia

Download or read book Economic Cooperation and Integration in Northeast Asia written by Sung-Jo Park and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Then after a short period of stagnation and retrenchment in the 90's, the economic prosperity is again in full swing from the beginning of the 21st century. The major driving force behind this is the rapidly growing economic and technical cooperation among countries (China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries) in the region, attributable to liberalization of trade and Free Trade Agreements efforts which is expected to lead to the establishment of a common market like EU. This book is the most comprehensive compendium of expertise about the current economic exchanges and chances of a common market in the Asia-Pacific realm and their perspectives substantiated by case studies.

Book Initiatives of Regional Integration in Asia in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Initiatives of Regional Integration in Asia in Comparative Perspective written by Howard Loewen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers to compare and explain variances of regionalism in Asia by disclosing the distinctive features of regional arrangements and how they evolved during the 1990s and 2000s against the background of a changing global environment. Moreover, it takes up a genuinely ‘inter-Asian’ perspective. By analysing and comparing diverse manifestations of regional integration agreements across Asia and its different sub-regions, it sets out to track their common characteristics and sub-regional facets with respect to their establishment, design and consequences. In addition, political processes accompanying their negotiation and implementation are scrutinized. The analysis encompasses nine case studies written by renowned scholars who together as a group combine an extraordinary mixture of different disciplinary backgrounds as well as expertise on shapes and processes of regional integration in different parts of Asia. The case studies seize on some of the most important features and controversial issues characterizing the second regionalism. Such are the emergence and impact of overlapping FTAs, regional financial and sub-regional economic integration and cooperation, power and the politics of regional integration as well as the nexus between conflict resolution, state failure and regional integration.
