Book A Digital Phase Locked Loop based Signal and Symbol Recovery System for Wireless Channel

Download or read book A Digital Phase Locked Loop based Signal and Symbol Recovery System for Wireless Channel written by Basab Bijoy Purkayastha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reports two approaches of implementation of the essential components of a Digital Phase Locked Loop based system for dealing with wireless channels showing Nakagami-m fading. It is mostly observed in mobile communication. In the first approach, the structure of a Digital phase locked loop (DPLL) based on Zero Crossing (ZC) algorithm is proposed. In a modified form, the structure of a DPLL based systems for dealing with Nakagami-m fading based on Least Square Polynomial Fitting Filter is proposed, which operates at moderate sampling frequencies. A sixth order Least Square Polynomial Fitting (LSPF) block and Roots Approximator (RA) for better phase-frequency detection has been implemented as a replacement of Phase Frequency Detector (PFD) and Loop Filter (LF) of a traditional DPLL, which has helped to attain optimum performance of DPLL. The results of simulation of the proposed DPLL with Nakagami-m fading and QPSK modulation is discussed in detail which shows that the proposed method provides better performance than existing systems of similar type.

Book Modulation and Multiple Access Techniques for Ultra wideband Communication Systems

Download or read book Modulation and Multiple Access Techniques for Ultra wideband Communication Systems written by Song Cui and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two new energy detection (ED) Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems are proposed in this dissertation. The first one is an ED UWB system based on pulse width modulation (PWM). The bit error rate (BER) performance of this ED PWM system is slightly worse than ED pulse position modulation (PPM) system in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. However, the BER performance of this ED PWM system surpasses that of a PPM system in multipath channels since a PWM system does not suffer cross-modulation interference (CMI) as a PPM system. In the presence of synchronization errors, the BER performance of a PWM system also surpasses that of a PPM system. The second proposed ED UWB system is based on using two pulses, which are the different-order derivatives of the Gaussian pulse, to transmitted bit 0 or 1. These pulses are appropriately chosen to separate their spectra in frequency domain. The receiver is composed of two energy detection branches and each branch has a filter which captures the signal energy of either bit 0 or 1. The outputs of two branches are subtracted from each other to generate the decision statistic and the value of this statistic is compared to a threshold to determine the transmitted bits. This system is named as acf{GFSK} system in this dissertation and it exhibits the same BER performance as a PPM system in AWGN channels. In multipath channels, a GFSK system surpasses a PPM system because it does not suffer CMI. And the BER performance of a GFSK system is better than a PPM system in the presence of synchronization errors. When a GFSK system is compared to a PWM system, it will always achieve approximately 2 dB improvement in AWGN channels, multipath channels, and in the presence synchronization errors. However, a PWM system uses lower-order derivatives of the Gaussian pulse to transmit signal, and this leads to a simple pulse generator. In this dissertation, an optimal threshold is applied to improve PPM system performance. The research results show that the application of an optimal threshold can effectively mitigate the effect of CMI and synchronization errors and achieve performance improvement. Finally, the multiple access schemes are discussed and time hopping is chosen as the multiple access scheme for PWM and GFSK systems.

Book Comparative Study of Spread Spectrum and Time Modulated Ultra Wide Band Communications

Download or read book Comparative Study of Spread Spectrum and Time Modulated Ultra Wide Band Communications written by Tan F. Wong and published by . This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-wideband communications have recently received much attention. A number of military and commercial applications of ultra-wideband have been suggested. An ultra-wideband transmitter generates signals of very large bandwidths (in excess of gigahertzs) by transmitting nanosecond or subnanosecond pulses at baseband in some randomized fashion. As a result, an ultra-wideband system is in reality a baseband spread spectrum (SS) system with a very large spreading gain. Many of the characteristics and advantages of conventional SS communications carry over to ultra-wideband. For instance, a typical ultra- wideband system is capable of supporting multiple users, is robust against jamming and interference, is robust against multipath fading, and is suitable for applications requiring low probabilities of interception and detection (LPI/ LPD). On the other hand, the use of a very large bandwidth also imposes some new challenges, like wideband antenna design, acquisition design, and interference with other systems. The goal of this project was to provide an independent evaluation of the usefulness and effectiveness of Time-Modulated Ultra-Wideband (TM-UWB) for short- to medium-range communication in a battlefield environment. TM-UWB and SS were compared in three hypothetical application scenarios that are of interest to the Air Force: a cooperative attack weaponry system, an aerial surveillance system, and a buried facility probing system. Results showed a strong potential advantage of using TM-UWB in the buried facility probing system, for which a short-range, high-rate, low-power, wall-penetrating communication system is needed. For the other two scenarios of medium- and long- range communications, the advantage of using TM-UWB was not clear and needs to be further investigated. Ultra wideband appears to be best suited for systems with fairly short link ranges and it far outperforms its counterpart indoors. (16 tables, 37 figures, 23 refs.)

Book Sequence Design with Applications to Ultra wideband Communication Systems

Download or read book Sequence Design with Applications to Ultra wideband Communication Systems written by Di Wu and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enable high data rate target applications in a typical ultra-wideband (UWB) dense multipath channel, DS-UWB signaling suffers from a severe inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and multiple access interference (MAI). In an attempt to avoid complexity at the receiver, we tackle these problems from the transmitter side and consider ternary sequence based UWB (TS-UWB) signaling as a unifying descriptor of a number of impulse-based UWB schemes. We propose a technique which employs ternary complementary sets to improve the performance of orthogonal pulse based multi-channel UWB systems. By assigning mutually orthogonal (MO) complementary sets to the users, both MAI and multipath interference can be significantly suppressed. One of the major impediments to deploying such systems is a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). We show that PAPR can be upper bounded by an autocorrelation merit function of column sequences of the corresponding complementary set matrix. Hence, we propose a design of complementary sets satisfying a column correlation constraint. The design algorithm recursively builds a collection of MO complementary set matrices starting from a companion pair of sequences. We relate correlation properties of column sequences to that of the companion pair and illustrate how to select an appropriate companion pair to ensure that a given column correlation constraint is satisfied. To support high-speed and multirate data services, we construct ternary orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code with a zero-correlation zone (ZCZ). Compared to the conventional Walsh code based OVSF code, the proposed ZCZ-OVSF code maintains its code orthogonality even in a multipath channel or when synchronism is lacking and, thus, is suitable for quasi-synchronous (QS) TS-UWB systems. We further propose an adaptive data rate transmission scheme which maximizes the uplink aggregate throughput of the system by allocating OVSF codes to the active users based on their signal to interference and noise ratios (SINR). Finally, we propose an adaptive transmission approach that suggests selecting a ternary beamforming sequence for a TS-UWB signal based on the signs of the reflection coefficients corresponding to a few strongest paths so that the signal energy at the output of the simple non-adaptive receiver is enhanced.

Book Multi Carrier and Spread Spectrum Systems

Download or read book Multi Carrier and Spread Spectrum Systems written by K. Fazel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-02-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequency spectrum is a limited and valuable resource for wireless communications. A good example can be observed among network operators in Europe for the prices to pay for UMTS-frequency bands. Therefore, the first goal when designing future wireless communication systems (e.g. 4G - fourth generation) has to be the increase in spectral efficiency. The development in digital communications in the past years has enabled efficient modulation and coding techniques for robust and spectral efficient data, speech, audio and video transmission. These are the multi-carrier modulation (e.g. OFDM) and the spread spectrum technique (e.g. DS-CDMA), where OFDM was chosen for broadcast applications (DVB, DAB) as well as for broadband wireless indoor standards (ETSI HIPERLAN-II, IEEE-802.11) and the DS-CDMA was selected in mobile communications (IS-95, third generation mobile radio systems world wide, UMTS/IMT 2000). Since 1993 various combinations of multi-carrier (MC) modulation and the spread spectrum (SS) technique have been introduced and the field of MC-SS communications has become an independent and important research topic with increasing activities. New application fields have been proposed such as high rate cellular mobile, high rate wireless indoor and LMDS. It has been shown that MC-SS offers the high spectral efficiency, robustness and flexibility that is required for the next generation systems. Meanwhile, different alternative hybrid schemes such as OFDM/OFDMA, MC-TDMA, etc. have been deeply analysed and adopted in different international standards (ETSI-BRAN, IEEE-802 & MMAC). Multi-Carrier & Spread-Spectrum: Analysis of Hybrid Air Interfaces draws together all of the above mentioned hybrid schemes therefore providing a greatly needed resource for system engineers, telecommunication designers and researchers in order to enable them to develop, build and deploy several schemes based on MC-transmission for the next generation systems (which will be an integration of broadband multimedia services covering both 4G mobile and fixed wireless systems). * Offers a complete treatment of multi-carrier, spread-spectrum (SS) and time division multiplexing (TDM) techniques * Provides an in-depth insight into hybrid multiple access techniques based on multi-carrier (MC) transmission * Presents numerous hybrid multiple access and air interface architectures including OFDM/CDMA, MC-CDMA, MC-DS-CDMA and MT-CDMA * Covers new techniques such as space-time coding and software radio Telecommunications engineers, hardware & software system designers and researchers as well as students, lecturers and technicians will all find this an invaluable addition to their bookshelf.
