Book Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks

Download or read book Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks written by Demetres D. Kouvatsos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are widely considered to be the new generation of high speed communication systems both for broadband public information highways and for local and wide area private networks. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to simplify the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to limit transmission delays. However, to support such diverse services on one integrated communication network, it is most essential, through careful engineering, to achieve a fruitful balance amongst the conflicting requirements of different quality of service constraints ensuring that one service does not have adverse implications on another. Over recent years there has been a great deal of progress in research and development of ATM technology, but there are still many interesting and important problems to be resolved such as traffic characterisation and control, routing and optimisation, ATM switching techniques and the provision of quality of service. This book presents thirty-two research papers, both from industry and academia, reflecting latest original achievements in the theory and practice of performance modelling of ATM networks worldwide. These papers were selected, subject to peer review, from those submitted as extended and revised versions out of fifty-nine shorter papers presented at the Second IFIP Workshop on "Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks" July 4-7, 1994, Bradford University. At least three referees from the scientific committee and externally were involved in the selection of each paper.

Book Telecom Operations Management Solutions with NetExpert

Download or read book Telecom Operations Management Solutions with NetExpert written by Kornel Terplan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-06-09 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The communications environment is rapidly changing. The barriers of traditional phone and data technologies are going to break down, and users can expect a true multimedia environment with existing services transferred and new services implemented. New suppliers, such as cable companies, will compete with interexchange carriers, RBOCs, and local phone companies for the market share. The differentiator is the price/performance ratio of the service under consideration. Today's migrated and new services lack powerful management solutions. Telecom Operations Management Solutions with NetExpert examines the most advanced products available to manage new technologies as well as addresses services, such as: Advanced telephony Wireless networks Commercial broadband Mass-market broadband Competitive access services Intercarrier communications Infrastructure services This resource also demonstrates how expert systems solve the problem of handling the large volume of data streams from numerous network components. Practical solutions support each example of an application - offering first-hand operational experience. The book provides practical examples to deploy management solutions based on NetExpert framework from Objective Systems Integrator. The framework consists of the principal modules, such as a gateway to managed devices and services as well as the workstation for operators. This framework is extended by point rulesets to manage individual devices by domain rulesets to manage device groups by enterprise rulesets to manage complete telco services The solution sets support all layers of telecommunication management networks, such as element, network, service, and business layers. As a result, these solution sets are extremely important to both incumbent and new telco service providers. Numerous cases cover customized solutions for managing wireless networks, sonet rings, ATM, old and new phone services, broadband services, and special access services of ISPs. Telecom Operations Management Solutions with NetExpert describes never-before-published information about solution sets based on an expert-system-based framework.

Book Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks

Download or read book Performance Evaluation and Applications of ATM Networks written by Demetres D. Kouvatsos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Highways are widely considered as the next generation of high speed communication systems. These highways will be based on emerging Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN), which - at least in principle - are envisioned to support not only all the kinds of networking applications known today but also future applications which are not as yet understood fully or even anticipated. Thus, B-ISDNs release networking processes from the limitations which the communications medium has imposed historically. The operational generality stems from the versatility of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is the transfer mode adopted by ITU-T for broadband public ISDN as well as wide area private ISDN. A transfer mode which provides the transmission, multiplexing and switching core that lies at the foundations of a communication network. ATM is designed to integrate existing and future voice, audio, image and data services. Moreover, ATM aims to minimise the complexity of switching and buffer management, to optimise intermediate node processing and buffering and to bound transmission delays. These design objectives are met at high transmission speeds by keeping the basic unit of ATM transmission - the ATM cell - short and of fixed length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern telecommunications world is a complicated place, overloaded with jargon and bewilderingly full of different technical options and opportunities. Many experts are only experts of small domains and within limited geographies. For newcomers it is often difficult to gain a grasp on the basic principles and even harder to unravel the mysterious technical paradoxes and the apparent contradictions of many modern technologies. My greatest hope in writing this book is that you, the reader, will find help and insight amongst its pages. I wish for no greater commendation than your thoughts that you find the subject of A TM presented here in an accessible and readable form. I hope also that the comprehensive glossary will remain with you, as your wayfinder through all that jargon! Martin P. Clark Frankfurt, Germany 20 December 1995 Acknowledgements No book on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) could fail to recognize the invaluable contribution to this technology and to world standardization as a whole made by the International Telecommunications Union and the ATM Forum, and you will find references to their work throughout the text. You'll find e-mail addresses of the main author of each paper, and you are surely encouraged to get in touch for further discussions. You can also take advantage of the CNOM (Committee on Network Operation and Management) web site where a virtual discus sion agora has been set up for IM'97 (URL: http://www.cselt.stet.it/CNOMWWWIIM97.html). At this site you will find a brief summary of discussions that took place in the various panels, and slides that accompanied some of the presentations--all courtesy of the participants. If you have not been to the Conference, leafing through these proceedings may give you food for thought. Hopefully, you will also be joining the virtual world on the web for discussions with authors and others who were at the Conference. At IM'97 the two worlds of computer networks and telecommunications systems came to gether, each proposing a view to management that stems from their own paradigms. Each world made clear the need for end-to-end management and, therefore, each one stepped into the oth er's field. We feel that there is no winner but a mutual enrichment. The time is ripe for integra tion and it is likely that the next Conference will bear its fruit.

Book Managing QoS in Multimedia Networks and Services

Download or read book Managing QoS in Multimedia Networks and Services written by José Neuman de Souza and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the third International Conference on Management of Multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS'2000) in Fortaleza (Brazil)! The first MMNS was held in Montreal ( Canada) in july 1997 and the second MMNS was held in Versailles (France) in November 1998. The MMNS conference takes place every year and a half and is aimed to be a truly international event by bringing together researchers and practitioners from all around the world and by organising the conference each time in a different continent/country. Over the past several years, there has been a considerable amount of research within the fields of multimedia networking and network management. Much of that work has taken place within the context of managing Quality-of Service in broadband integrated services digital networks such as the A TM, and more recently in IP-based networks, to respond to the requirements of emerging multimedia applications. A TM networks were designed to support multimedia traffic with diverse characteristics and can be used as the transfer mode for both wired and wireless networks. A new set of Internet protocols is being developed to provide better quality of service, which is a prerequisite for supporting multimedia applications. Multimedia applications have a different set of requirements, which impacts the design of the underlying communication network as well as its management. Several QoS management mechanisms intervening at different layers of the communication network are required including QoS-routing, QoS-based transport, QoS negotiation, QoS adaptation, FCAPS management, and mobility management.
